This is where the first steps to the Argentine independence where taken. The Cabildo started governing independently from Spanish rule when Spain was invaded by Napoleon in 1810 and Argentina, that back then was called Virreinato del Rio de la Plata, did not feel represented by the French ruler and Napoleon’s brother nicknamed “Pepe Botella” for his heavy drinking.

City advice

Don't miss

Plaza de Mayo and Puerto Madero

You can visit Plaza de Mayo and Puerto Madero at one go if you walk down the bridge that is located behind Casa Rosada that connects Plaza de Mayo with Puerto Madero
Customs and culture

Tips

If you are pleased with their service, tip waiters/waitress by leaving 10% of the check to them. Tips are not included in the check and waiters/waitresses will be counting on them when you leave.
Getting around

Subway

The subway is the fastest way to move but Buenos Aires is not entirely connected to the subway network. If you are heading for an area where there is a subway station, take the subway. You avoid traffic jams and picket lines that are so recurrent in the city.
Getting around

Buses

Buses are the best network of Buenos Aires since they can take you to literally any place. Besides, they are the cheapest means of transport. Thera are many bus lines that you can take at the Metrobus station round the Obelisco area.
Getting around

S.U.B.E. Card

This card allows you to take any bus and the subway. You can buy at kiosks and newsstands. In the case of the apartment, just walk down the 9 de Julio subway entrance.
