È stata insignita nel 1972 del premio Wakker per lo stato di conservazione del suo nucleo antico con case a graticcio e edifici dalle facciate dipinte con motivi sacri e profani. Oltre alle bancarelle e alle luci di Natale, Stein am Rhein propone un Avvento all’insegna della fantasia: si trasforma nella città dei racconti e delle fiabe, in tedesco la Märlistadt. Le vetrine dei negozi vengono allestite con raffigurazioni della fiaba scelta come tema annuale: il 2016 è dedicato “Il gatto con gli stivali”.
