Hillend was once the second largest city in NSW following the discovery of gold. But as quickly as it grew, it declined, leaving the old town abandoned. Many of the buildings survive caught in time, with old photos helping to reconstruct the visitor's view of the old city. Great old pub in the heart of the town, and comfortable camp site - a great place to walk, roam, soak up the history and watch the kangaroos. About 2.5 hrs from Orange through Bathurst and the historic Sofala (worth a stop on the way).
