Cottage in Stonesfield
The Old Bakehouse - Quintessential Cotswold Cottage
The cottage is over 350 years old, built in honey coloured Cotswold stone. It retains its exposed beams, floorboards, flagstone floors and the original cast-iron bread oven doors from its days as a working bakery. Open the French doors to the flagstone courtyard for a BBQ supper or snuggle down by the log burning stove with a glass of wine. Enjoy walks through the village woods to the river or just long soaks in the cast iron roll top bath (please note there is no walk-in or stand-up shower). The cottage is now connected to the villages new super fast fiber broadband service should you need to work. The cottage is peaceful, cosy and relaxing with lovely views across the countryside. All three beds have comfortable new mattresses and are made up with fresh, crisp, ironed, white pure cotton bed linen. The bathroom has ample white fluffy towels for relaxing soaks in the cast iron roll top bath. The log burning stove makes for cosy winter nights watching films or reading books. There are books to borrow, a cupboard packed with family games, Netflix, Prime Video or a 200+ DVD library to choose from. Throw open the French doors from the sitting room onto the flagstone courtyard where there is a table and chairs ready for you to enjoy summer dining, drinks or BBQ's. The kitchen is provided with freshly laundered tea towels, hand towels, oven gloves and is well equipped for food preparation during your stay. IN THE VILLAGE: There is a village pub a 5 minute walk from the cottage which serves honest pub food as well as drinks and good beers (it's a Free House). Within a 5 minute walk theres a local general stores for basic supplies, a hairdresser with nail salon and a Post Office. There is also a post box right outside the The Old Bakehouse if you want to send a postcard or two. There is even a visiting van which serves traditional British fish & chips once a week. There are plenty of country pubs and larger supermarkets within a short drive. Stonesfield is ideally situated for exploring the Cotswolds, Oxford, London and Stratford-upon-Avon (birthplace of William Shakespeare). WITHIN A 30 MIN DRIVE: - Some of the Cotswolds most picturesque villages (Burford, Kingham, Bibury, Bourton-on-the-Water, Upper & Lower Slaughter, Stow-on-the-Wold to name a few). - Beautiful country manor houses and gardens. - Many country pubs for food and drinks. - Oxford town itself with it's world famous historic University Colleges, University Parks and Meadows, famous museums, pubs with history, The Bodleian Library, The covered market, the oldest botanic gardens in the the UK and of course punting on the river! (25 min drive depending on time of day). - Soho Farmhouse Members Club (20 min drive). - Daylesford Organic Farm shop & Spa (25 min drive). - Luxury designer outlet shopping destination Bicester Village (25 min drive or 8 min train ride from Oxford Parkway Station). ...and many many more popular Cotswold destinations for adults and for children. WITHIN A 10 MIN DRIVE: - The historic small town of Woodstock with antiques shops, cafes and pubs (8 min drive). - Blenheim Palace, birthplace of Winston Churchill. Enjoy its world famous grounds landscaped by Capability Brown and formal gardens, take tours inside and outside the Palace, challenge yourself to solve the 2 mile yew tree maze, take a miniature railway ride, visit the butterfly house or dip into the extensive annual diary of exhibitions, concerts, shows and events (10 min drive). WALKS/BIKE: There are excellent walks and bike rides in the area and spanning out across the Cotswolds. The Oxfordshire Way itself runs alongside the property. A short walk from your doorstep takes you down to the wood that lies at the edge of Stonesfield and through to the River Evenlode where local children and adults love to take a dip in its shallow waters. Stonesfield has a regular bus service, there are a couple of train stations a short drive away and it is also in easy reach for airports (please see 'Getting Around' section below for more info). Guests have the whole property to themselves. They also have the use of the flagstoned courtyard in front of the cottage which French doors of the cottage open onto. I live in the The Old Bakery, which stands adjacent to The Old Bakehouse. We have enjoyed having guests staying in The Old Bakehouse for several years. I am close by should you need any help/recommendations but also respect your space and privacy during your stay. Stonesfield is a friendly village with a small store and Post Office. A visiting van offers traditional British fish & chips once a week. There are lovely walks from the doorstep including one which will take you through the village woods to the River Evenlode.
