A major Victorian landmark, visible from Melbourne on a clear day, Mount Macedon rises 1,001 metres (3,284 feet) into the sky, 65 kilometres (40 miles) northwest of the state capital. Its forested slopes and surrounding countryside are a floral wonderland, hosting vast expanses of eucalypt and mountain ash parkland as well as glorious heritage gardens housing many rare plant species. The village’s tree-lined main boulevard is characterised by handsome heritage buildings, erected in the mid-19th century when this part of the state was put on the map thanks to the discovery of gold. The prospect of striking it rich in nearby goldfields attracted fortune seekers and entrepreneurs, who spent their findings on carving out a beautiful base, much of which has been preserved. Now, however, the buildings are home to galleries, boutiques, and restaurants, many of the latter stocking regional wines — the Macedon Ranges region, encompassing Woodend, is blessed with more than 40 vineyards and cellar doors.

Thanks to its proliferation of gardens and parks, the countryside in and around Woodend changes with every season. Spring heralds gardens awash with daffodils, magnolias, wisteria, and rhododendrons, with native flowers also in bloom along forest trails. Autumn is also a colour sensation, with oak and other deciduous trees luring hikers and nature lovers with the prospect of leaf-peeping. In summer, Melbournians arrive for cool respite from the city’s heat, while in winter, fires crackle and the promise of snow creates a cosy atmosphere. Discover Mysteries of Hanging Rock

There are many myths and legends surrounding Hanging Rock, a jagged volcanic outcrop surrounded by a nature reserve just eight kilometres (five miles) east of Woodend. Fictional tales aside, the rock draws outdoor enthusiasts keen to tackle walking trails to its summit, with fun climbing challenges and commanding views along the route. Others visit to make the most of the expansive picnic grounds, providing the perfect perch to recline in the shadow of this geological wonder.

Cycle the Three Town Scenic Route

This 74-kilometre (46-mile) cycling trail is the ultimate way to gain a scenic snapshot of the Macedon Ranges. Starting in Woodend, the track loops across emerald farmland, along quiet country lanes, and through pretty historic villages, including Trentham and Kyneton. Aside from one challenging hill, this is a breezy ride with plenty of places to refuel en route.

Hike through Macedon Regional Park

While the star of this park may be Mount Macedon, the peak’s surroundings offer plenty of opportunities to feel the force of nature. There are more than 30 kilometres of trails to explore throughout, from the short Sanatorium Lake Eco-Trail to the full-day Macedon Ranges Walking Trail, both providing native flora and fauna in spades — and the latter rewarding hikers with unbroken views over Hanging Rock.
