Your guide to Wee Jasper

All About Wee Jasper

Wee Jasper is a small village in the beautiful Yass Valley region of New South Wales. It sits in an area of geological importance, with its base at the foot of the Brindabella Ranges, edged by the Burrinjuck Dam, all within an ancient seabed. Here you will find fossils from the early Devonian Specimens from over 400 million years ago — including remnants of bones from the Age of Fishes. Placoderms, sea snails, and lungfish are perfectly preserved among other specimens within limestone formations. The major attraction is the impressive Carey's Cave with its seven chambers of sculptured rocks and impressive crystal formations, created by the dropping of the water table.

Wee Jasper is surrounded by natural beauty which can be enjoyed on several walking trails. You can take a leisurely stroll along the scenic Murrumbidgee River or head along the Wee Jasper section of the epic 400-kilometre-long Hume and Hovell Walking Track. On both walks you can spot an abundance of wildlife including 56 species of birds such as lyrebirds and fantails, as well as kangaroos and wallabies.

The best time to stay in a holiday rental in Wee Jasper

The most pleasant time to be in Wee Jasper is during spring and autumn, when the days are generally filled with sunshine and the nights are mild. In October the popular Dragon Dreaming Festival takes place on the banks of Lake Burrinjuck near Wee Jasper, featuring four days of arts, entertainment, and music from local and international artists. If you plan to visit in summer, be prepared for hot sunny days and nights and make sure you pack plenty of sunscreen and a hat. A winter visit will be greeted by mostly cold days and nights, and a higher chance of rain, so come prepared with layers. Whenever you decide to visit, you’ll find a range of accommodations in Wee Jasper to suit all adventure plans.

Top things to do in Wee Jasper

Careys Cave

Drive 15 minutes to Carey’s Cave, one of Australia’s most impressive limestone cave systems. Set in a spectacular limestone landscape, the cave features seven chambers to explore, with naturally sculpted rock and crystal formations. Head down a flight of 30 steps to mostly flat, well-lit paths that pass through various chambers full of ancient fossils more than 400 million years old. Several concerts are held in the caves every year, due to the amazing natural acoustics.

The Hume and Hovell Walking Track

Walk along the Wee Jasper leg of this epic walking track that traverses New South Wales, retracing the steps of early explorers. The track cuts through the Wee Jasper Nature Reserve and climbs over a stony ridge covered with a dry sclerophyll forest. In spring and early summer, you’ll be treated to blooming wildflowers along the way. From the top of the ridge there are amazing views of Wee Jasper and the surrounding area, and there is an abundance of native wildlife to spot.

Micalong Falls

Just a short drive out of town you’ll find the Micalong Falls Reserve. From the pretty Micalong Creek it’s just a short walk up to the picturesque Falls, which are surrounded by several inviting swimming holes that offer clean, clear water for a refreshing dip on a warm day. The setting here is serene and perfect for enjoying a relaxing picnic.
