Places to stay in The Channon
Grand old timber home, three minutes walk to the centre of Nimbin, opposite the uniquely Nimbin Bowling Club with its restaurant and regular nights of music and entertainment. Spacious living room, kitchen, high ceiling bedrooms opening out onto verandah, and a balcony overlooking the quarter acre backyard.
Hostess Mari can provide unique Salvadoran cooking, or Australian dishes to your taste. Or you can make use of the facilities of the large kitchen. Explore the nearby National Parks, and unique geography of the Bundjalung country, and learn how Nimbin became the sister city of Woodstock and a magnet to artists, musicians, writers and individuals seeking an alternative lifestyle. Site of the annual world famous Mardi Grass festival.
Nimbin is set in the middle of several National Parks with numerous bushwalking trails of varying degrees of difficulty, from easy one hour excursions to overnight camping in the mountains. There is a rich musical culture with local musicians jamming at the famous Oasis Cafe or The Bush Factory. Local bands play three nights a week at the Nimbin Freemasons Hotel, there are occasional free concerts in the park and at the monthly local market. There are always buskers in single main street. There are local weekend markets at the outlying villages and communities in the lush subtropical rainforest in the mountains around Nimbin. Both the Nimbin Hotel, and the Bowling Club across the street, have world class restaurants. A few minutes walk to the centre will find four excellent restaurant/coffee shops, a well serviced supermarket, with a health food store, and the iconic Oasis coffee shop. Novelty clothes shops, tourist advisory centre and art gallery are clustered together in a few short blocks of the main street with its world famous murals and painted shop fronts. On the edge of town is the Djambung Gardens model permaculture centre, and the sacred Nimbin Rocks visible from anywhere in the town.

  • A lovely home right in the centre of Nimbin. Wonderful hosts, spacious room and spotlessly clean premises. There's a free public pool right next door and the wifi works perfectly in the house. You can help yourself to coffee or tea any time and Mari's cooking is simply delicious. My warmest recommendations for staying with this couple in Nimbin!

  • Michaels place is an awesome value location to discover the super close little hippie village Nimbin or to just enjoy the easy and relaxed vibe of being in the nature and having your own space. We had breakfast with little Wallabies a few meters away and got invited every night for a super delicious self-made dinner from Michael who’s an ongoing chef next to building everything around the houses himself. We got our own private space but always felt welcomed to have a chat and Michael helped wherever he could (also when we had issues with our car). We are really happy with our stay, thanks Michael!

    Lena2020-02-08T00:00:00Z

The Yogi's Hut is a much loved off-grid earth studio, and home-away-from-home for our mother, grandmother and the family Yoga teacher, Carolyn. It is light-filled, simple, and peaceful. We are thrilled to share the hut with travellers and guests who enjoy rustic comfort, quiet bush ambience and eco-conscious living. The hut is located on a larger shared property but is completely private. It is located 5 minutes by road from the thriving alternative village of Nimbin.
The Yogi's Hut is a large, light-filled, one-room studio space, with an extra large partially covered deck for you to practice yoga or meditate in the morning sun. The hut is charming and comfortable with simple eco-amenties. To really enjoy your time here, you must be prepared to embrace rustic pleasures like an outside composting toilet, lighting a fire for warmth, and thoughtful use of the off-grid solar system. There is limited mobile coverage ( 1-2 bars Telstra/Optus outside on the deck) and no internet/ Wi-Fi in the hut. The hut is equipped with a fridge, toaster, and electric lights. We have a petrol-powered generator for back-up power on rainy days. In summer the high ceilings, earth floor and fans help the dwelling stay cool, and in winter the morning sun warms the space beautifully. We have a four-burner gas cooker, a small camping oven, and gas-fired hot water. The toilet is a composting toilet seperate from the main dwelling and the shower room is attached to the deck, meaning it cannot be accessed internally. We have provided warm robes for you to travel to and from the shower. The Yogi's Hut is best suited to a single traveller or couple, however, the built in lounge/daybed can be comfortably converted into x 2 single sleeping spaces for up to 2 more guests if needed.
The hut is located in a rural, sparsely populated area, but is only 5 minutes by road from amenties in the village of Nimbin. The Stony Chute valley is incredibly beautiful, and is always alive with birdsong. We see echindnas, wallabies, blue-tounge lizards, and goannas on the property. If you get up early we can show you where you are almost guaranteed to see our resident wallabies. Nimbin is a truly special place and has great food and farmers markets.
  • Me and my partner had a beautiful weekend away at the yogi’s hut. It was raining for the most part which was a great excuse to stay in and enjoy the space. The place has a real cosy feel and lots of character. Was really tough to leave! Pheobe was a wonderful host and very quick to respond to any queries we had. Would highly recommend it to anyone wanting to stay in the area! Thanks pheobe :)

  • Had a lovely couple of days reading, doing yoga and soaking in the sun and rain on the deck. Really special place to spend time on my own to recharge from the city. :) Phoebe was really prompt with messaging and super helpful!

    Tessa2020-02-12T00:00:00Z
  • Such a beautiful building that you enjoy the comfort of the indoors as much as the farm! Phoebe is a great host and check in was a breeze.

  • Phoebe and David are awesome hosts who went above and beyond to make our stay at the Yogi's Hut special. They were close by, happy to answer any questions and were even kind enough to lend us their portable record player so we could listen to our records! We loved this earth home's open plan, outdoor deck (with a chess set), seperate shower and compost toilet with a beautiful view of native trees. We hope to come back some day :)

check out our group discounts by asking for an offer, as little as $25 per person for groups of 4 or more. Please consider our little paradise. we will have three dwellings listed soon. The second will be listed by the 10th of January, it will suit up to 4 people. Open plan with a great view of Nimbin Rocks the outstanding natural feature of the local area. We have lots of wild life. Beautification still in progress but the scenery is really what you are paying for.
self contained and available for first responders. Enquire about special prices. Our space is unique because of the view of NImbin Rocks but also the natural environment surrounding our listing, we have a four hundred year old fig tree very close to the builings and this is a haven for birds and bats, we have a healthy community of micro bats as well. You can book up to seven people for the listing . With three queen sized beds and one single bed it will also be great for a family with kids. The current listing has a veranda on both the eastern and western sides to provide access to sun or shade as required. With some of the local wallabies coming almost to your door in the early hours it is a beautiful experience to be able to see. Also we are close to national parks, water falls, cafes and restaurants. We aim to provide fresh fruit grown onsite in the coming years and in the near future provide guests with opportunity to pick their own vegetables and herbs grown in gardens close as a stone throw from your bedr Blue and Red Wrens are abundant here as are a number of different finch varieties, other birds include Wedge tailed eagles, Ospreys and Black Cockatoo and White Cockatoo to name just a few. Down the road at the bridge one can observe Platypus and the odd Echidna can be seen around the property.
Nimbin is famous throughout the world for it's natural charm and anti establishment community especially toward the use of cannabis, it is the second busiest town in Australia after Byron Bay and many people visit the town every day. Nimbin has many other great features including access to natural health practitioners and massage, a variety of eateries and souvineers to be bought. Also there are a number of heritage listed national parks within a short drive.
  • The property is close to the town of Nimbin, but lies secluded on a hill, looking at the Nimbin Rocks. The accommodation was clean, stylish and comfortable. The best part about our stay weren't the amazing view, the wallabies, that you can see from you porch, or the proximity to Nimbin town- the best part of our stay was our host: Micheal. He welcomed us with warm, homemade apple crumble, helped us to kick of a fire in front f our porch and gave us tips and recommendations about the area

    Tarek2020-03-16T00:00:00Z
  • Awsome!!!!

    こうた2020-03-13T00:00:00Z
  • Mik even prepared food for us after we reached his place at 3am in the morning. He was there to show us the area at that time of the morning.. 5 star, highly recommended

    Shahriar2020-03-07T00:00:00Z
  • Michael is a superb host! I love getting back to nature and being able to see wallabies outside the bedroom window was amazing! Great place to unwind and unplug!

    Marinda2020-03-02T00:00:00Z
  • I had a wonderful time at Mic's property in Nimbin. You could see the powerful Nimbin rocks from my front door! A really cool location: nice and quiet, but very close to the town & local sights. Mic was super-nice, and very helpful, and he's a great cook as well! He was kind enough to cook up an excellent veggie curry on my first night! The place was large, open, and clean, with wallabies and kookaburras just outside for an amazing aussie experience! What a cool property and thoughtful host - a thanks for a wonderful little vacation!

    Yael2020-02-13T00:00:00Z
  • Michael is a kind man and an amazing cook! We were lucky enough to try his potato bake and it was nothing short of divine! He accommodated for our vegetarian food requirements last minute and was more than welcoming and was happy to give us a few tips and tricks for things to do around the area! Make sure to not let the drive in scare you off, as stated, his property is a work in progress and eventually will be fit for over 15 people in the one house! Make sure to bring your own towel and shower stuff. Overall, he was a great host!

    Giulio2020-01-15T00:00:00Z
  • When you book a bed, you will automatically get a whole house to yourself. There are several buildings on the property. The location has direct views of Nimbin rocks and the magnificent Hanging Rocks waterhole for swimming is approximately 20km drive from here. Mik is a very friendly host who is working on site every day. The bed was comfy and I enjoyed the large kitchen and the gorgeous old trees on the property.

    Sabine Ekanta2020-01-12T00:00:00Z
  • Super friendly ... super easy booking.. great communication and it was just an oasis. 5 mins up the road from beautiful Nimbin, plenty of room for a big family. Accomodation was more then adequate, and if you are lucky enough to experience Miles cooking, especially the “banoffe” pie then you’re in for a real treat. There’s simply no other place in Nimbin that provides value and friendly home style accomodation like Mikes places (you won’t get better, cheaper or friendlier accomodation on Airbnb anywhere in Australia then Mike’s place!) Thanks a lot Mike!

Walking distance to Lismore’s CBD, close to SCU (University), river, cafes, nightlife, Regional Art Gallery, public swimming pool this location is perfect for travellers. The house is one side of a 1920’s duplex & has gorgeous original features. Lots of interesting walks near by. The household consists of myself, Nahla (sweet natured dog) & often my sister’s dog, Jelly. I am vegetarian & I make raw vegan cakes for cafes. I am planting lots of edibles in the garden... herbs, fruit, veggies 😁🌻.
Girard’s Hill is an old established suburb of Lismore , right next to town. At the end of the street is the steep Girard’s Hill with lots of trees & bush land leading up to Robinson’s Lookout. A walking track from there takes you either to the baseball fields by the river or to the golf course open Greenland’s where I have seen koalas several times. Lots of cute old houses & friendly people around here.
  • Cosy house with lots of character and a comfy bed. Louise was friendly and made sure my dog felt at ease in her home. She was very helpful with providing local information. Extremely good value. Highly recommend!

    Kirsten2020-03-10T00:00:00Z
  • Without a doubt, Louise has an absolute treasure on offer. The house is so close to the town centre. You could walk or drive. I drove because I needed my coffee fix in a hurry. Oh, there are plenty of nice cafés around. That said, Louise has coffee and tea available for you anyway. I felt welcome and safe at all times. The room is perfect and my bed was super comfy. The desk in the room made my work really easy to do and I would 100% check if the space was available on my next wedding gig to the area. 'Gonz The DJ'

  • Louise’s place is such a lovely place to stay. The house is beautiful, clean, and well equipped, very spacious and comfortable. Louise is a wonderful host, we made a last minute booking and arrived late and she was so welcoming and accomodating. I wouldn’t hesitate to book again, highly recommended!

  • Thank you, Louise, for having my husband Jed and I stay at your lovely home! It is so cutesy and you were very welcoming and kind. We were transported in time in your 1920s home. We were so happy to have this experience & your dog Nahla was so gentle and cute! We will keep you in mind the next time we are looking for an Airbnb in the Lismore area. 😊🌻

The Dairy is a funky little place for two...or a solo adventure of solitude. It's an old, characterful dairy, so nothing State of the Art here...just light, bright, airy and comfortable. Situated in the little village of Dunoon, with it's cool general store , post office and school (all within a gentle 5 min walk), a picturesque drive to waterfalls, bush walks and the infamous Channon markets. A 20 minute drive from Lismore or Clunes, 30 mins from Bangalow or Federal and 45 mins from Byron Bay
The Dairy has a comfy queen bed, a hot shower, a washing machine TV, DVD player and a kitchen with gas top, microwave and a very small benchtop-oven. The Dairy has some games, books, DVD's and a well stocked pantry for you to prepare meals. It's a quiet, private space which you have entirely to yourself.
Dunoon is a quiet village with a little school, a post office and a friendly, well-stocked general store which is open from 7am-7pm. It's 9 mins from The Channon, with it's art gallery, tea rooms, fabulous monthly market and the astoundingly beautiful Protestors Falls are a further 13 mins at Terania Creek. The very beautiful Minyon Falls is half an hour from The Dairy, as are the lovely villages of Bangalow and Federal. Byron Bay is a further 15 mins past these.
  • A comfortable place for two in a pretty town, close to lismore. It has all the comforts and generous teas, soaps etc. Very happy!

  • My stay at the dairy was perfect! It had everything you needed for a cosy relaxing stay. I loved coming in to see a selection of movies and board games. Sarah was fantastic, she was easy to contact and check in was straight forward and flexible :) I would definitely stay at the dairy again!

    Mala2019-10-01T00:00:00Z
  • Beautiful home in beautiful location with amazing hosts! Highly recommend to anyone looking to relax and enjoy the nature Dunoon has to offer

    Katharina2019-09-01T00:00:00Z
  • The Dairy in Dunoon proved to be a wonderful stay and a great stepping off point to explore the Northern Rivers region. The house had everything we needed to ensure a relaxing holiday. Highly recommend to anyone wishing to avoid the hubbub of the coastal towns but desiring close access to all the beaches, national parks, markets and other appealing activities locally available.

    Robert2019-08-22T00:00:00Z
  • Awesome spot, Sarah is a great host, highly recommend this BnB to any couple with or without a child as there are plenty of things to keep the young ones entertained in and out of the Bach

  • This is a real gem. It was an absolute delight, very well appointed and with great thought invested in making sure visitors have everything they could need. Sarah spares nothing to ensure guests are happy. For anyone sensitive to the vibes present in tourist accommodation, the Dairy gets top marks. It just has a great feel.

Not a shed for old alpacas, but a shed that formerly housed alpacas. Now it's a light-filled studio with a queen sized bed and sitting area. There's a beautiful outdoor shower, environmentally friendly composting loo and paved patio.
Enjoy the views from the covered porch. Stroll down to the creek to spot water dragons, turtles, kingfishers, wallabies and maybe even a platypus. Hand feed the small herd of alpacas with lucerne (provided). Challenge your travelling companion to a match of Boules on the lawn.
The Channon is a picturesque and unique village in the Byron Bay hinterland. It is 45 minutes from the beaches, cafes, pubs and restaurants of Byron Bay; 35 minutes from the historic township of Bangalow; and 20 minutes from Clunes in one direction and Nimbin in the other. The area is home to a unique mix of people from all walks of life who value community, the environment and creativity. The nearest service centre is Lismore, 25km south.
  • Great host! Relaxing atmosphere and very good experience. The alpacas are all so cute and friendly. We could feed them too. The night sky was wonderful, very little light pollution. Definitely enjoyed our stay there.

    Chris2020-01-27T00:00:00Z
  • This was the perfect getaway for my girlfriend and I. Bronwyn and Simon were very welcoming and did everything they could to make our stay as enjoyable as possible. The Old Alpaca Shed was exactly what we were looking for and was even better in real life! The property around the shed was picturesque and it was made even better by the friendly, inquisitive alpaca's and ducks! We would recommend this place to any of our friends and our only regret was that we didn't stay for longer.

    Ryan2015-12-20T00:00:00Z
  • Bronwyn was very welcoming and the shed was lovely. The views are spectacular being that the property is on the top of the mountain. The alpacas are very inquisitive.

    Samantha2015-09-26T00:00:00Z
  • After a beautiful scenic drive and with easy to follow Google-GPS driving instructions we arrived at Bronwyns amazing property and the Old Alpaca Shed guest house. We were able to settle in comfortably, you will find that the inside is very much how it is pictured, it's very lovely, neat, clean and comfortable. The outdoor patio area is all set up as you'd expect from a quality guest house. Bronwyn and her partner greeted us warmly. They gave us privacy but let us know they were there if we needed them. The setting and the shed itself is absolutely amazing. The views will relax you instantly and are extremely beautiful night or day. The Alpacas were also very cute and friendly! Overall I highly recommend staying here, it's a great escape, comfortable and has a friendly, welcoming vibe that puts you at ease. Thank you Bronwyn, I'd definitely stay here again.

    Michael2015-08-26T00:00:00Z
  • Bronwyn was welcoming on arrival and the place is easy to find. The Old Alpaca Shed is a treat, no doubt about it. Peaceful and charming with an Eastern outlook to catch the morning sun from the al fresco kitchen and dining room (not to mention the views and, right there in front of you, the alpacas themselves). Don't be fooled by the rustic appearance of the shed - the interior room is very comfortable and cosy and it was great to have wifi provided.

    Rob2015-08-14T00:00:00Z
  • When's the last time you saw the disc of the Milky Way in all its shocking brilliance? Or satellites, or shooting stars? My single night stay at the Shed was wonderful. Cold outside, warm as toast inside, without a heater. As advertised, the Shed is well supplied with necessities. Bronwyn and Simon are excellent hosts, and very helpful with local info. Will stay there again.

    Frank2015-08-07T00:00:00Z
  • A great little set-up in a wonderful location. The old shed had been transformed into a cute bedroom, with kitchen space overlooking The Channon's lush, rolling landscape. Bronwyn ensured we had everything we needed, yet we were able to relax in privacy which was just what we were after. The bathroom and shower facilities were unforgettable - for aĺl right reasons - but I won't spoil the surprise! Looking forward to a return visit.

A large family home reminiscent of a Tuscan Villa, in a quite street with stunning valley views. The shared kitchen is fully equipped and guests can cook their own meals, breakfast will be available on request. I have three cats who run the place and small pets are welcome on prior arrangement. Enjoy the outside areas with a cold drink and listen to the abundant bird life or sit quietly and enjoy the valley views and cooling breezes. Close to shops, Lismore 10 min, Ballina and the beach 30 min.
Goonellabah is centrally located up on the plateau and is close to Ballina , Byron Bay, Lennox Head and nearby hinterlands and beaches. Also 30 min to Nimbin and a host of weekend markets throughout the area.

A piece of paradise located 5 minutes from Nimbin village. The spacious guesthouse overlooks a dam abundant with wildlife and stunning views of the Nimbin Rocks. It has 2 comfy king single beds, a single bed in a separate room, kitchenette, large bathroom, laundry basin, ample wardrobe storage, sofa, dining table, tv with dvds (there is no reception). Perfect for friends travelling together, but please, no pets. Nightly rates are for 2 people, extra guest is $45. Enjoy your stay!
Large windows provide a magnificent view of the Nimbin Rocks. You can enjoy the wildlife from the verandah while sipping on your cup of tea (enjoy the birds, but please don't feed them--they have plenty to eat). Enjoy the refreshing summer rains under a covered patio. The kitchenette comprises a cooktop, microwave, small fridge, tableware and cookware, and plenty of drawers to store your supplies, a dining table with chairs. The studio area has two comfortable king single beds that can be pushed together, a sofa, chest of drawers television with built-in DVD player and a collection of DVDs (there is no tv reception). A small bedroom with a single bed is located opposite the spacious bathroom. Luggage can be stowed in a walk-in robe with hangers. The house is fully insulated, windows on all sides provide cooling cross-breezes, there are fans and heaters. The guest-house is supplied by inline filtered rainwater (short showers please) and solar power.
We are a small rural property (17 ha) typical to the region, with young dairy cows and a bull grazing on the pasture. Wildlife is abundant. We have identified more than 85 bird species on the property, including yellow-tailed black cockatoos. There are several species of frogs, dragon flies, and butterflies. The dam is home to saw-shell turtles, eels, water dragons and other reptiles. Mammals include platypus, bandicoots and red-necked wallabies, flying foxes and micro bats. Foxes and dingoes can be heard at night during their breeding season. We are in the heart of the 'Rainbow Region', surrounded by rainforests that are part of the World Heritage listed national parks, including Border Ranges, Wollumbin (Mt Warning), Nightcap and others--all a day trip away.

Nimbin is a village in the Northern Rivers area of the Australian state of New South Wales, approximately 30 km (19 mi) north of Lismore, 33 km (21 mi) northeast of Kyogle, and 70 km (43 mi) west of Byron Bay. Nimbin is notable for the prominence of its environmental initiatives such as permaculture, sustainability, and self-sufficiency, as well as the cannabis counterculture. Writer Austin Pick described his initial impressions of the village this way: "It is as if a smoky avenue of Amsterdam has been placed in the middle of the mountains behind frontier-style building facades. ... Nimbin is a strange place indeed." Nimbin has been described in literature and mainstream media as 'the drug capital of Australia', 'a social experiment', and 'an escapist sub-culture'. Nimbin has become an icon in Australian cultural history, with many of the values first introduced there by the counterculture becoming part of modern Australian culture. History Nimbin and surrounding areas are part of what is known as the "Rainbow Region", which is of cultural importance to the Indigenous Bundjalung people. The name Nimbin comes from the local Whiyabul (Widgibal) clan who’s Dreamtime speaks of the Nimbinjee spirit people protecting the area. Since in the year 1,973, the area has been a haven for Australia's counterculture. Forests of red cedar first attracted loggers to the area in the 1840s, but by the end of the century most of the land had been cleared. With the cedar forests gone, Nimbin was subdivided in 1903, with the land turned over to dairy farming and growing bananas. In the 1960s, the local dairy industry collapsed due to recession and Nimbin went into serious economic decline until 1973, when the Aquarius Festival, a large gathering of university students, practitioners of alternative lifestyles, hippies, and party people, was held in the village. The festival was the first event in Australia that sought permission for the use of land from the Traditional Owners and made a significant attempt at reconciliation. After the festival, hundreds of participants and festival goers remained in Nimbin to form communes and other multiple-occupancy communities, in search of an "alternative lifestyle". Nimbin in fact made legal history for the first ever application of group title ownership of land in Australia. Since the Aquarius Festival, the region has attracted thousands of writers, artists, musicians, actors, environmentalists, and permaculture enthusiasts, as well as tourists and young families escaping city life. Interviews were conducted in 1992 documenting the alternative lifestyle movement of Northern NSW in the 1970s, focusing on the town of Nimbin and the 1973 Aquarius Festival. Interviewees discussed how they arrived in Nimbin, their efforts at organising the Aquarius Festival, and the lasting impact the festival had on the township. In 1979, the Nimbin community staged the "Battle for Terania Creek" to protect the remaining local rainforest. As a result, the New South Wales government imposed a "no rainforest logging" policy covering the entire state, the world’s first government legislation to protect a rainforest. The population of Nimbin before the failure of the dairy industry in 1961 was 6,020. In the 2006 census, Nimbin had a population of 352, compared to 321 in the 2001 census. The region's high rural population (35 percent of Lismore residents, according to the census) means that Nimbin services a surrounding rural area of about ten thousand people living within 15 km (9.3 mi). Nimbin had the highest unemployment rate in the Lismore Local Government Area in 2006, at 18.1 percent. Nimbin's population in the 2011 census was 468. The 2016 census published Nimbin's population as 319, with local services provided by the City of Lismore (its area containing 45,000 people). Cannabis culture and MardiGrass In New South Wales the cultivation, possession, or sale of cannabis is punishable by law. In Nimbin, cannabis used to be openly bought, sold, and consumed. The prevalence of a drug culture in Nimbin since 1973 has been accompanied by a prevalence of collective and public creativity: colorful and spiritually motivated art (including large paintings above shop awnings), music, poetry, craft, and fashion can all be seen on the main street. The town is known as a hotspot for alternative social activities, grassroots political discourse, and the espousal of naturalist, humanist, anarchist, feminist, libertarian, permissive, new-age, mystical, and radical social philosophies (which can all be seen as collective creative endeavors). To rally for an end to the prohibition of cannabis in Australia, Nimbin has held an annual MardiGrass festival since 1993. On the first weekend with any part of it in May, thousands descend on Nimbin for cannabis-oriented fun and frivolity. Activities include: a Prohibition Protest Rally and Parade with the Ganja Faeries, the Nimbin Cannabis Cup, the Hemp Olympix, which includes the Bong "Throw'n'Yell", Joint Rolling, and the Grower's Iron Person event, where runners must first carry a 20 kg (44 lb) sack of fertiliser, then a bucket of water, and finally "the crop", as a tribute to the difficulties faced by growers in the hills, and to show that cannabis users can be fit and healthy. At night, entertainment ranges from the Harvest Ball and Picker's Ball, rave doof parties, to poetry and jazz in local cafes. There are a number of shops in Nimbin geared towards cannabis culture. The Nimbin Hemp Embassy is a "soft entry point for drug information", and a shop selling anything to do with hemp, except cannabis itself. Clothing and natural skin products using industrial hemp products. The Nimbin HEMP Bar used to allow patrons to smoke cannabis while enjoying fresh coffee and cake. In April 2008, the police announced their intention to close the HEMP Bar and Museum. Landlords were sent letters to this effect. Rather than cause legal problems for their landlord, the HEMP Bar crew voluntarily closed their doors and moved out. The HEMP Bar reopened in 2009 as a coffee and hemp information centre, but smoking of cannabis is no longer encouraged. The Nimbin Museum was a collection of local artifacts, local art, and alternative culture open for viewing. The Museum and two other buildings were destroyed in a fire on 13 August 2014. There are plans to rebuild a proper museum at the site. Police intervention The level of police intervention against drug trafficking has fluctuated over the years; however, the State and Federal Police have never been able to stop or even significantly reduce the prevalence of cannabis use in the village. In April 2008, a squad of 110 officers, six horses, and several police dogs conducted searches in a police operation. Several buildings were searched including the Hemp Embassy. Eight people were arrested, 72 people were issued cannabis cautions, and police seized 4 kilograms (9 lb) of cannabis and cannabis ‘cookies’. The police sent letters to the Nimbin Museum and the Hemp Bar leaseholders indicating an intention to seek closure orders under the Restricted Premises Act of 1943 for the MardiGrass weekend. The Restricted Premises Act allows for the closure of premises for three days and orders may be obtained weekly. The Museum reopened with a new leaseholder while the Hemp Bar remained closed for eight months and reopened in January 2009. CCTV cameras in the main street of Nimbin had pushed dealing off the streets and into the museum, and the Hemp Embassy had been requesting that police deal with the problem. Following the raids, Hemp Embassy volunteer Andrew Kavasilas commented: "This is a real slap in the face for people who would like to see other resources in town. We have been inviting the police to come down and sort out the dealing in the museum for years and this is their response. They could work with the community, but they're not interested." Many locals voiced their opposition to the police operation. Following the operation, Richmond Police local area commander Superintendent Bruce Lyons vowed to "shut down the drug trade.” Attractions Nimbin has a police station, hospital and medical centre, lawyers, real estate agency, service station with NRMA accreditation, restaurants, cafes, and a pub. The pub has an in-house restaurant. There are a number of sporting clubs and the bowling club maintains licensed premises. The Nimbin Neighborhood and Information Centre (NNIC), run by local volunteer residents, offers visitors guides, computers for Internet use, a small Centrelink office, legal advice, a nurse practitioner, a welfare worker, weekly soup kitchen in the adjacent park, and a publishing service for the local newspaper. Local attractions include the town hall, annual MardiGrass, markets, bands, walks to the mountains and day-to-day activities from buskers to street stalls. Other nearby attractions: Nimbin Rocks, a series of jagged outcrops, solidified plugs left after the erosion of volcanic dykes and vents, and Blue Knob, that are both landmarks for the village. Mount Warning (known to the Bundjalung people as Wollumbin, meaning 'cloud catcher'), is about 50 km away. Named by James Cook as a maritime navigational indicator of dangerous offshore reefs, Mt. Warning's summit is the first part of mainland Australia to receive light from each sunrise. Mount Warning is the remaining centre plug of a caldera which, 23 million years ago, had a 100-kilometre (62 mi) diameter. Its height was 1,156 meters (3,793 ft), nearly twice the height of Mount Warning today. The summit of Mt. Warning can be climbed via a 9-km, 5-hour return walk through forested slopes. Nightcap National Park is one of the few remaining places to see the remnants of the Big Scrub rainforest. There are local creeks, water holes, and rivers for swimming. Media The Nimbin Good Times is a free monthly community newspaper, also distributed in Lismore, Byron Bay, and some suburbs of Brisbane and Sydney. Nimbin Zone Magazine is Nimbin's bi-monthly magazine featuring creative and artistic people from Nimbin and beyond. The community radio station, 2NIMFM offers an independent alternative media voice and plays a diverse range of music and programming in Japanese, German, and the Bundjalung language. • Ed and Marie's place is tranquil, private and clean

  • Ed and Marie's cute Barneymobile is great value for money. I slept really well in the comfy bed. So nice to hear just the sounds of nature. Highly recommended.

  • 30mins drive to Byron bay, a very very nice room, so quiet and so cute. And the landlady is very friendly.

  • Ed & Marie have a wonderful & rustic trailer which has all of the amenities one could ask for. I would highly recommend this lodging space to anyone wanting a unique & out of the way place to stay. The local market/cafe/wine & beer shop is just a two minute drive away and the surrounding area is beautiful. Robert Bond

  • Great little hideaway for a night while stopping through clunes. Really close to the Clunes store and cafe. Bathroom not too far away from barneymobile and had a cosy feel inside. Would return!

  • It was an amazing experience! We were very tired after a long trip and Barneymobile was perfect! We had a great hot shower and slept with the sound of nature. Marie was super kind and the room was full of lovely extras. Thank you! : ))

Valleydale Cottage is the ideal relaxing holiday destination for two. You'll have complete privacy with the cottage and 10 acres to yourself and your partner. You are close enough to enjoy the colour and diversity of the Byron Bay region.
The cottage has been built in a farmhouse style with recycled wood. A verandah wraps around the cottage on all 4 sides giving access to fabulous valley and farmland views.
Your cottage is located in a rural farming community with Federal village store only a short 9 minute drive away. Many local farmers sell organic produce direct from the farm gate. Minyon Falls is a short 15 minute drive from the cottage - after rain the falls are spectacular. You can enter either from the bottom (for fit people) or the top for a short stroll.
  • The cottage is spectacular and will be your own piece of peace for as long as you choose to stay. Loretta and Martyn gave me lots of advice and tips about the area which I took on board. Martyn also leant me his rain jacket which came in handy.' Everything about the cottage was delightful from the moment I entered the cottage. The welcome basket has you set for the day with organic bread, eggs, local cookies, coffee and a bottle of red. The cottage itself has a beautiful verandah that wraps around and is just perfect for chilling, listening and watching the world (or lack of) go by. I made use of the webber BBQ to cook meals at night. Bring your supplies if you just want to be at the house. One of the highlights is the spa that takes in the entire view. And if you have to do some work like I did, the internet is up to speed. Did I mention the best sleep? Super comfy bed and linen made me hit snooze and then not even set an alarm the following days,. I will be back to enjoy this piece of peace in the hinterland

  • Loretta is a great host and shared her wonderful cottage with us. With spectacular views and quiet location it is truely an escape to relax and unwind. Felt like home as soon as we arrived and didn’t want to leave. Can’t wait until next time!

    Andrea2020-02-24T00:00:00Z
  • Wow, what a fantastic place! My wife and I stayed here for 3 days and loved every second. Spectacular view across rolling hills and bushland, the cottage is very cute and has all the comforts of home. Best part is that it's located away from anyone else with it's own private driveway, not a neighbour in site, complete solitude. We will be staying here again, it's the perfect getaway we will want to do on a regular basis.

    Ian2020-02-15T00:00:00Z
  • Thanks again Loretta, just completing a review of our stay.

    Rhys2020-01-24T00:00:00Z
  • The photos cannot capture just how breathtaking and tranquil this place really is. Every moment was absolute bliss, from meeting Loretta, to driving down the magical, fairytale like gravel driveway, to opening the door and seeing the jaw dropping views. The home has everything you could possibly need and is impeccably furnished. We barely left the property and spent most of our time on the porch taking in the views, cooking beautiful food and relaxing in the jacuzzi. I would recommend this incredible place to EVERYONE. It’s one of a kind. We cannot wait to come back again!

    Isobel2020-01-16T00:00:00Z
  • What a beautiful little cottage tucked away in the rainforest. Very accommodating & very private. Great for a couple getaway or some time in solitude. Some nice features were the spa bath, the fire with wood and kindling ready, the double shower & breakfast ingredients provided. Very comfortable bed too! Treat yourself x

    Kwaÿ2020-01-13T00:00:00Z
  • The view is SPECTACULAR! We would love to wake up to that every day. Our stay was amazing and Loretta went above and beyond with her hospitality to ensure our stay was excellent. If you are looking for a place to stay in the area look no further, you should definitely stay here.

    Paul2019-12-27T00:00:00Z

    Kara2020-01-13T00:00:00Z
  • Even driving up the road before you arrive at Peter’s place, you fall in love with the area. Quirky little touches, peacefulness and beauty. When we arrived at the house, we were blown away by the magical land, the singing of birds, and appartment itself was perfection. Our hosts had so many thoughtful touches, fresh local eggs, a bbq just waiting to be used and the patio enjoyed. We slept so well on a very comfy bed and cannot wait to come back. Thank you sincerely, Nicole

Small room for single female person. It contains a queen-sized bed, a lamp and chair. The bathroom is shared and the house itself is lived in (children are with me five nights out of seven, not on Mon or Tues nights), but it is warm and comfortable. There is currently another woman who also lives with us. We also have a cat, so please note this just in case you are allergic :-/ Non-smoking, single females ONLY please.
The neighbourhood is friendly and close to town, but still in nature with nice trees and lots of wildlife.
We live in a beautiful, friendly neighbourhood just a hop, skip and a jump away from the local farmer's markets and stunning Crystal Castle, plus some of the country's most spectacular beaches and waterholes :-)
  • My stay at Zanna'z place was great, Zanna was lovely and very thoughtful and accommodating. The room was perfect and bed nice and comfortable. Would recommend staying here if you are visiting Mullumbimby and the Byron Shire.

    Sam2019-07-05T00:00:00Z
  • It was a pleasure staying with Zanna and her family. The room was really comfortable (especially the mattress!) and I loved the little touches like the salt lamp and water filter on the shower. The room is a good size with a lovely view to the garden. Her kids were a real pleasure to be around, and the whole house has a lovely lived-in feel that was so nice to come home to at the end of the day. Check-in was really easy and Zanna's communication and hospitality was great - I really enjoyed our chats as well. Highly recommended!

High in the Byron Hinterland, this rural cottage is a quiet farm getaway with great proximity to local highlights. 35 minutes to Byron Bay and Brunswick Heads, 20 minutes to Bangalow and just up the road is the stunning Minyon Falls and the Nightcap national Park. This lovely, private, light filled cottage on a working macadamia farm is the perfect getaway.
As you come up the tree lined driveway, you will enter a whole new world of beauty. Stunning views await as you decide where to relax either on the huge eastern or the even larger western private covered decks, equipped with BBQ and dining tables. Light some candles or turn on the festoon lights for a holiday mood and you are set to enjoy a beautiful getaway. The Cottage on Macacino Farm is set on 55 acres of picturesque macadamia orchards. The living area has a split system air conditioner with cooling and heating, large lounge, tv, streaming device and wifi. Tastefully decorated and ultra comfortable. The Cottage has three bedrooms, two with queen beds, and one bedroom with a single and trundle. A full kitchen if you wish to cook and a washing machine is located in the bathroom. Even in winter, the fully covered enormous decks provide fantastic outdoor living, Guests have access to 55 acres of private land as well as quiet country lanes, suitable for walking or cycling. There is plenty of parking and the Cottage is well away from the road so there is no road noise. Your dog is welcome!! The cottage has a securely fenced yard on the easterly side of the house, with a very large covered deck for shelter. We only ask that you do not let the dogs roam unleashed. This is to protect our abundant wildlife. We can almost guarantee that most mornings and afternoons, wallabies will gather to feed very close by. These quiet, timid creatures live here full time. They are not tame, but if not frightened off they will come quite close to the cottage. Koalas also live on the property but are harder to spot. Large flocks of parrots, galahs and cockatoos also pass through very often.
An easy drive to the amazing Doma Cafe in Federal, Clunes Cafe, Eltham Valley Pantry, Harvest Restaurant and Deli Newrybar, the Channon Pub, the Farm at Byron and so many more, you are spoilt for choice. Beaches to numerous to name, but our closest beaches are Belongil Beach at Byron Bay and Torakina and Main beaches at Brunswick Heads. Weekend Markets in the area are quite famous and really interesting. There are also many amazing waterholes and waterfalls in the district. More information provided on arrival.

  • A great place with a nice room, and stylish touches. I stayed for 2 night after the tropical fruit party. It is a close walk to the supermarket and town. It has a nice balcony and birds come in the morning. Penelope is a great host.

    Craig2020-01-04T00:00:00Z
  • It was a pleasure staying with Penelope in her Mustard Cottage - a beautifully decorated home with lots of character and charm. Our room was a great size and, because I was staying in the room with a friend, Penelope supplied us with a blow up bed. The lounge room was spacious and cool and one of my favourite spots in the house was the reading chair on the front verandah. Penelope herself is attentive and we felt welcomed by her hospitality. I personally enjoyed our little chats about over breakfast or a cup of tea :) The location of the cottage is perfect - a short stroll and we we're in Lismore's town centre. My friend and I thoroughly enjoyed our stay. Thank you Penelope!

Room in family home. My home is ten minutes drive from Lismore Base Hospital, Southern Cross University and Lismore CBD.
This guest room has a queen size bed. Even though it is situated on the road side of the house, the street is very quiet and peaceful.
The neighborhood is secluded and quiet with an open area directly across the road. The property also adjoins a koala corridor, and we often have koalas visiting in our big gum tree at the front. It is a very short street set amongst bushland. Lots of birds.

  • Jenny went above and beyond during our short stay at Wishingwell Farm. We really enjoyed ourselves in the relaxing and private setting of the farm, away from the hustle and the bustle and went home re-energised. Thank you for this beautiful experience!

    Maja Lisa 2019-10-03T00:00:00Z
  • Jenny was friendly, hospitable and took time out to make us feel at home and give us a tour of the farm. We had a lovely time and miss the animals already! Our room was also super clean and cosy.

  • Beautiful farm fueled by Jenny and Davids’ love for animals. Wonderful getaway for us city folks. Great hospitality!

    Jaime2019-02-24T00:00:00Z
  • As soon as you arrive at jennys Farm you get greater by a host of sweet friendly animals, chickens, ducks, goats, dogs, cats who all seem to get on well with each other! You get the chance to go around feeding them all with jenny, which my grandson particularly loved. The room we had was spotlessly clean and had everything we needed, with lots of yummy things in fridge for breakfast. Jenny and David took us out and about with them which was great as we didn't have transport and they were great company! I would definitely recommend this place to anyone who wants to be in a peaceful, beautiful setting with the added interest of all the lovely animals 😊

    Rebecca2018-12-01T00:00:00Z
  • Jenny was a wonderful host and the stay was such a dream. Her home is beautiful and all the animals so loved and friendly. Stunning location, cosy home, great chats, would highly recommend!

It's a beautiful place to rest, work and just be plus they are lovely people.

  • Alan & Linda’s place us very clean, quiet and comfortable. They are very welcoming. The room feels very private in a wing of the house. The bed is very comfortable and there is a private use bathroom with a great pressure shower. Also an amazing swimming pool. Very peaceful and relaxing. Highly recommended.

    Rob2020-02-24T00:00:00Z
  • I have had a lovely time at Alan and Linda’s place. Met Alan’s sister Jean and we had so much in common. A beautiful family and a beautiful home. The pool was wonderful, my section of the house was very private. Bed was like sleeping on a cloud. My balcony looked over the pool and I loved sitting out there and swimming in it. Breakfast was upstairs and I had a choice of about 10 cereals plus 2 beautiful muffins. Felt spoiled rotten which was lovely as I am grieving my Dads passing last month. One of the best places I have ever stayed and can’t wait to escape there again. Thank you x

    Jan2020-02-21T00:00:00Z
  • Beautiful place to stay. The thought they have put into the guest area gave it home vibes! Breakfast was provided which was lovely! Will be staying there again if I’m in the area

There were smiles all around with truly lovely Hosts, and I recommend their home as a very nice place to stay.

Large balcony overlooking a spacious garden. Renovated kitchen and two large living spaces.
Just across the road from the Bowling Club that has a good restaurant. Two or three minutes walk from the centre of the village where there is a hotel (also with a good restaurant) and numerous coffee shops, eateries, a Pizza parlour and a small supermarket.
  • This is a place filled with character - both the accommodation, extra comfy bed, and the characters that are your hosts. Warwick and Mari are delightful, very generous in sharing their knowledge of El Salvadorean culture and food [Tasty!]. Learn a bit of Spanish while you're there...

  • The traditional Salvadorian breakfast is awesome! I'll be staying here next time I get to Nimbin for sure

    Randall2020-03-10T00:00:00Z
  • Warwick and Mari were very welcoming and accepting hosts. We were lucky enough to eat some delicious food prepared by Mari from her home country of El Salvador. Mari makes a mean breakfast and is very passionate about her organic produce that she grows herself in the gardens they have. We were very well looked after and it's such great value to be so close to the middle of town, just a couple hundred metres to the main street with shops and cafes. Such lovely people and wonderful hospitality.

Check in was also very very easy, the key was in the lock by the door when we got there a few hours early so were able to get in early. About 20 minute drive from busy Byron which we didn't mind at all. Would strongly recommend!
