Your guide to Subiaco

All About Subiaco

Just four kilometres outside Perth on the southwestern coast of Australia, this verdant suburb is known for its unique blend of architecture, chic restaurants, and notable local arts scene. Subiaco was founded in 1851 by Benedictine monks from the Italian town of the same name, and it retains a distinctly European feel today. You can wander past perfectly preserved heritage homes, admire Benedictine relics at the local museum, and stop in for espresso at one of the many cafes lining the piazza-like town centre. Nevertheless, there’s also distinctly modern flair here, and your coffee is likely to be made with fair-trade beans from a 4th wave roaster. You can see evidence of the many waves of change in Subiaco through its architecture — grand 19th century Romanesque buildings sidle up next to a 1920s Art Deco theatre and the midcentury modern Arts Centre.

The best time to stay in a holiday rental in Subiaco

The climate in Subiaco can be compared to that of the Mediterranean, with hot, dry summers and mild, rainy winters. For the best chance of sunny weather, head to town anytime between January and April or from October until December. The summer months of December, January, and February are the most popular for visitors, although there is plenty to do here all year round. The Celebrate Subi festival is a good excuse to head to town in April for 10 days of events celebrating Subiaco’s art scene, food, and culture — you can enjoy live music, food trucks, bar crawls, comedy shows, and fun pop-ups. Plan to be here on a Saturday to take in the atmosphere of Subi Farmers Market, or come in August to catch a Fringe Festival show or two.

Top things to do in Subiaco

Subiaco Arts Centre

This example of midcentury modern architecture is home to the Yirra Yaakin Theatre Company and plays host to a variety of theatre, dance, and other live performances. Catch a show and be sure to leave time before or after to have a stroll through the beautiful 2.6 hectares of heritage-protected gardens.

Subi Farmers Market

Every Saturday morning, Subi Farmers Market takes over the local primary school, with vendors setting up shop to sell locally-grown organic produce and all sorts of gourmet goods. Pick up fresh, seasonal fruit and veg to cook up a feast, or sit down to brunch alfresco and chow down on piping hot shakshuka, buttery crumpets, or flaky spanakopita as you watch the neighbourhood buzz by. All the profits from the market go to the school.

Subi Art Discovery Trail

Pick up a map — or download the app — and take yourself on a walking tour of Subiaco’s outdoor public art. Ranging from street art to sculpture to installations and mosaics, the pieces by local artists are on display all over town and tell stories of the many faces and eras of Subiaco’s history.
