Holiday houses in South Melbourne

Known for its well-preserved Victorian architecture and iconic terraced cottages, South Melbourne is a suburb of Melbourne located just south of the city’s central business district (or CBD). The area is within walking distance of the popular riverside and nightlife of Southbank, as well as one of the region’s cultural powerhouses, the National Gallery of Victoria. Melbourne’s CBD is renowned for its iconic narrow laneways, street art — check out Hosier Lane and Duckboard Place — and hopping bars. Coffee culture is a big part of life in this city, and there’s a virtually endless range of cafes to hit during your stay. And for that much-needed nature break, South Melbourne has easy access to nearby beaches, the city’s Royal Botanic Garden, and riverside paths by the bustling promenade.

December through March can get quite hot, and therefore is suitable for swimming at the many beaches on the city’s coast, such as St. Kilda Beach, which is a 25-minute ride away on public transport. There are occasional thunderstorms in the summer, so pack an umbrella, although the season isn’t known to be particularly wet. Autumn and spring are great times to visit South Melbourne for more comfortable temperatures, fewer people on the streets and beaches, and the ability to focus on the city’s culture and food scenes. Winters here are quite mild, so if visiting at this time, there’s no need to pack heavy winter jackets.

Queen Victoria Market

The historic market has been operating since 1878, and showcases some of that era’s architecture at the heritage-listed food halls and covered open-air stalls. The market takes up two blocks of the city centre and offers local products, clothing, and other artisan goods, but most of all, since Melbourne is a coffee destination, be sure to check out the excellent roasters at the market.

National Gallery of Victoria

This is the country’s oldest gallery, dating back to 1861, but its International Building was built in the 1960s and is a shining example of modernism with its brutalist architecture. Inside, The Great Hall is home to the world’s largest stained glass ceiling and showcases Indigenous and non-Indigenous Australian artists and artefacts alongside international art.

Southbank Promenade

This riverside promenade, one of the busiest in the city, stretches from Princes Bridge to Queens Bridge and joins with the Yarra Promenade to the west. Along the way, you’ll be greeted by artists, buskers, and the famous Ophelia statue, all framed by scenic views of the cityscape, which by night is beautifully lit. It’s a great place to shop, walk, and spend the evening with friends on one of the many bar patios. Don’t forget to check out the Southbank art and craft market which is set up by the Arts Centre every Sunday.
