Your guide to Smiths Beach

All About Smiths Beach

Smiths Beach is located on Phillip Island in Victoria, less than a two-hour drive from Melbourne. This peaceful town is known for its pristine waterways, outstanding fishing, and consistent surf break, with options for beginners and advanced surfers. During the summer months, Smiths Beach is an idyllic spot to cool off in the turquoise ocean or relax under the shade of a beach umbrella. At low tide, there are also rock pools at each end of the beach.

In the cooler months, you can take invigorating walks along the coastline or simply lay out a picnic rug and soak up some winter sunshine.

Aside from the beach, Smiths Beach offers several ways to relax and unwind, including yoga classes, meditation sessions, and several day spas. Or, if you’re looking for excitement, head to the local grand prix track to learn more about Phillip Island’s heritage as one of the world’s top car-racing destinations. Make your way to the Phillip Island Nature Park at dusk to see little penguins waddle up the beach and into their burrows.

The best time to stay in a holiday rental in Smiths Beach

Smiths Beach is a great spot to visit any time of year. The most popular season is summer, which brings long sunny days and warm beach weather. Autumn is cooler but delivers clear skies and light winds, an ideal time for getting out and exploring the island. Spring can be windy and chilly, but you’re most likely to see whales, and the bushland surrounding Smiths Beach is also often brought to life by colourful wildflowers. Winter is quiet and uncrowded at Smiths Beach, making it an ideal time for long, uninterrupted walks or simply curling up under a blanket and enjoying the peace. If you’re keen to see the island’s famous penguins, the good news is that they make an appearance year-round.

Top things to do in Smiths Beach

Phillip Island Nature Park

Phillip Island is home to the world’s largest colony of little penguins. Head to the Phillip Island Nature Park around dusk, and you’ll have the chance to see them waddle from the ocean, up Summerland Beach, and into their burrow.

Racing circuit

Phillip Island has a world-class racing circuit and frequently hosts local and international motorsports events. The circuit is home to a racing museum, which tells the story of Phillip Island’s racing heritage, and a go-karting and slot-car racing track that allows fun for all ages.

SS Speke Shipwreck

In nearby Kitty Miller Bay, you’ll find the rusted bow of the SS Speke shipwreck, which ran aground in 1906 while attempting to pass through the waters of the Bass Strait. Because the vessel is washed up on shore, you can get up close to explore it. The sheltered bay itself is also ideal for a snorkelling trip, and there are many rock pools with starfish and a diverse collection of marine plants.
