Holiday houses in Taormina

Perched on a hilltop on the east coast of Sicily, Taormina is widely known for its diverse beauty and incredible views over the Ionian Sea. This picturesque village has Mount Etna as its backdrop, Europe’s largest and most active volcano. Founded in the 4th century, Taormina prospered under both the Greeks and the Romans for hundreds of years before it was conquered by the Normans. It was only rediscovered as a holiday destination in the 18th century. Today, Taormina offers a collection of Greek and Roman ruins, including the incredible Greco Roman theatre, which often hosts musical and theatrical performances during summer. The city itself is home to charming narrow cobbled streets, a wide array of restaurants, and is a great place to explore and relax.

Like most of Italy, Taormina gets busy during the months of July and August. During summer, the island is vibrant and full of life and you can take advantage of Europe’s long, light evenings. This is an ideal time to enjoy swimming in the warm sea, or sunbathing at the foot of Isola Bella. Temperatures can also be quite warm, so take plenty of light, cool clothing. The weather remains temperate until November. Over winter, Taormina becomes quiet, and the coldest months to visit are January and February. While there isn’t much happening in the town during these months, this can be a wonderful time to explore the area and soak up its beauty. Spring is also an ideal time to visit, as there’s still plenty of sunshine, temperatures are warm, and you can still enjoy the town’s many restaurants and cafes. The almond trees blossom in February, and the area around Taormina is known for its beautiful spring flowers.

Greco Teatro

With its spectacular ocean backdrop, this ancient theatre is one of the must-see attractions in Taormina. Originally built by the Greeks, it underwent some adaptations in Roman times. It’s believed that it was also used as an arena for gladiators. Today, it’s often used to host outdoor musical performances.

Isola Bella

Isola Bella is a tiny island located on a small bay on the coast, just below the city of Taormina. When the tides are suitable, it’s possible to walk across to the island via a small and narrow path. Originally a private property, the island is now a nature reserve. To get to Isola Bella, you can take a cable car down to the coast from Taormina.

Trevelyan Gardens

This public garden offers a pocket of English style and sophistication within Taormina. The area once belonged to a wealthy English lady, and was built in the 19th century. There are several cottages, some old WWII artillery, a play area, and a villa inspired by Eastern-style architecture, which offers an amazing view of the bay of Naxos as well as Mount Etna.
