Your guide to Red Rock
All About Red Rock
Red Rock is a small town on Australia’s eastern coast, nestled between the Corindi River and the ocean. Locals flock here in the summer months to soak up the sun on the region’s beautiful beaches. Surrounded by nature preserves such as the Guy Fawkes River and Washpool National Parks, it’s also a popular destination for exploring the great outdoors.
The Corindi River is a beloved spot for snorkelling and kayaking in the warmer months, while Red Rock is also home to some fascinating geographical features. Meander down to the eponymous beach to admire the crimson rocks jutting out of the otherwise sandy shores, particularly by the Red Rock headland, and you’ll see why the town got its name.
For a more extensive offering of local eateries, you can make the 30-minute drive down to Coffs Harbour, where you can sample fresh local seafood.
The best time to stay in a holiday rental in Red Rock
Summers here tend to be hot, wet, and humid. However, this is also the time of year when the town and its beaches come to life, so it’s a good time to stay at Red Rock accommodation. By contrast, the winter months are dry and cool, with temperatures getting down into the single digits Celsius. You may find that some local restaurants are closed for the winter season. Spring and fall offer the best balance between temperature and rainfall, allowing you to explore the outdoors in a mild environment.
Top things to do in Red Rock
Yuraygir National Park
This coastal conservation area is just north of Red Rock but it’s so large that it takes an hour to reach by car. The park is home to the Yuraygir coastal walk — which takes four days to complete in its entirety — and there are 48 different beaches to explore, including famed Shelley Beach with its unique rock formations.
Coffs Harbour
Make the half-hour drive to Coffs Harbour, where you can stroll around the harbour or by the river, towards the North Coast Regional Botanic Garden. The coastal city is also home to the famous Big Banana monument and an amusement park of the same name, which offers water slides, ice skating, and mini golf.
Nymboi-Binderay National Park
This scenic park is a two-hour drive from Red Rock, providing a glimpse of wildlife through vast old growth forest and at its rainforest sanctuary. It is also a destination for whitewater rafting down the Nymboida River, which has cut a gorge through the landscape.
