Your guide to Ocean Grove

All About Ocean Grove

Ocean Grove is a lively coastal town situated on the southern coast of the Bellarine Peninsula of Victoria, separated from its twin town of Barwon Heads by the Barwon River. Ocean Grove is well known for its excellent surf beaches, which front Bass Strait and attract surfers from far and wide. The mouth of the Barwon River offers safe and sheltered swimming along its sandy shoreline and the town benefits from several walking tracks that offer good views along the beach.

The Surf Life Saving Club plays a prominent part in the town, which is surrounded by lawns, native gardens, and bollards carved and painted into the figures of important people in the area. Ocean Grove is spread over undulating hills and valleys, which offer views down to the ocean. Blue Waters Lake and the Begola Wetlands are two major inland attractions at the bottom of the town's valleys, with walking tracks to explore the local bird life.

The best time to stay in a holiday rental in Ocean Grove

If there is a best time to visit Ocean Grove it would probably be in the summer months. The days are warm and full of sunshine making it the perfect time to enjoy the beach and many water activities on offer. The region also comes alive at this time of the year with festivals and events including the popular Toast to the Coast event, which takes place in November — showcasing the best wines and gourmet food from the Bellarine Peninsula. Although much colder, winter is also a nice time to visit if you enjoy sitting indoors by an open fire while watching dramatic ocean scenes. Whenever you decide to visit, there is a great range of Ocean Grove accommodations to suit all budgets and tastes.

Top things to do in Ocean Grove

Main Beach

In Ocean Grove, life is all about the beach. Main Beach is a stunning two- kilometre stretch of surf beach that is patrolled by lifeguards in the summer months, with excellent ocean swimming and surfing conditions. There is a walking track along the beach that takes in spectacular views of the coastline and the Surf Life Saving Club is a nice place to grab a bite and rest.

Bellarine Farmers Market

Every third Saturday of the month, the Farmers Market takes over Ocean Grove Park. You will find fresh produce from local growers including vegetables, honey, olive oil, and plants. There are also lots of local makers and creators selling homemade baked goods, chutneys, and cheeses as well as handmade clothes and jewellery. There’s always music and entertainment for children too.

The Great Ocean Road

Take the 30-minute drive to the start of one of Australia’s most iconic scenic routes, the Great Ocean Road. The 240-kilometre road starts in Torquay and hugs the rugged coastline almost all the way to Warrnambool. There are many scenic lookouts along the way, including one of Victoria’s most famous natural landmarks, the 12 Apostles — a series of rock formations rising from the ocean.
