Located on the western fall of the Blue Mountains, and over a kilometre above sea level, Oberon is a small country town surrounded by farms, native forests, and national park. Due to its elevation, Oberon is relatively cool all year long, and often gets a sprinkling of snow in winter — making it ideal for a Christmas in July getaway. The area is popular with adventurers and campers, as well as keen anglers, who can fish for coral and brown trout in Oberon Dam, also known as Lake Oberon. The lake is also ideal for bird watching and non-powered boating, and a beautiful spot for a sunset kayak or canoe ride.

Spend an afternoon wine tasting around Oberon, with two local wineries open by appointment, and on the first Saturday of every month, sample local produce at the Oberon Community and Farmers Market. Oberon is often used as a base for people who wish to explore nearby Jenolan Caves — the most ancient discovered caves in the world.

In winter, the town often gets a light covering of snow, and this is a perfect time to enjoy snuggling in front of a fire, hunting for truffles, or marvelling at the clear night skies. When the weather warms, gardens begin to bloom and Oberon is covered in daffodils. Some local gardens open their gates in spring, including nearby Mayfield Gardens. In summer, Oberon is an ideal place to enjoy a range of activities like hiking, fishing, and camping; while the temperatures can be warm during the day, they often drop considerably at night. Autumn usually brings sunny days and coloured leaves and is an ideal time to hunt mushrooms in local pine forests.

Mayfield Gardens

Open during spring and autumn, Mayfield Gardens displays a wide array of plants and botanical treasures. Explore the English Box Hedge maze, take a stroll through the orchards, or make your way past the blossoming water garden to the Garden’s café and kiosk where you can sample some fine local produce. There’s also a Japanese-style water garden, and bridges leading to hidden grottos and waterfalls. The gardens also host a range of events, including seasonal festivals and summer glamping.

Pine Forests

The timber industry is one of Oberon’s biggest employers, and the sprawling pine forests that surround the town offer all kinds of activities. During autumn, mushroom hunting is a popular pastime, and every April the area hosts a Field to Forest Festival. There’s a network of walking trails that can also be explored by mountain bike, on horseback, or even four-wheel drive.

Jenolan Caves

Less than a 30-minute drive from Oberon you’ll find Jenolan Caves — the oldest discovered network of caves in the world. This labyrinth of limestone caves features some impressive gravity-defying stalactites and winding underground rivers. You can explore the caves yourself, or take a guided tour.
