A cosy little cottage ideally suited to accommodate two couples situated in a picture postcard village where history and nature are right outside your door.
A Scottish cottage in a beautiful historic village. Built 1700 this two bedroom cottage has many modern conveniences, it is warm and snug with a wood burning stove plus oil fired central heating. The kitchen has all modern conveniences, dishwasher, fridge-freezer, fan oven, microwave, washing machine and tumble dryer etc. Both bedrooms have kingsize double beds. One bedroom is en-suite. There is a workshop / garage attached for bikes and stuff, parking for one car is directly outside. The cottage can be reached by bus from Dumfries where there is a railway station. A new cell phone mast has brought mobile telephone reception to the village! (Summer 2018) It's really close to great beaches and coast plus hills and walking country. The house has a pub less than 30 metres away and a shop too. There are 2 of the wolrd famous 7Stanes mountain bike courses at Dalbeattie and Mabie plus a third one at Ae only another few miles further. The village of New Abbey is home to the 13th Century Sweetheart Abbey, and the water powered corn mill. There is a beautiful walled garden at Shambellie and an award winning tea room. All of these attractions are a vey short walk from the cottage. The house is great for nature lovers and those who want a break in rural Scotland. Guests will have access and exclusive use of the whole house I always try to speak to my guests on arrival and like to answer any questions and give advice for things to see and do. We will not be around during your stay but usually contactable by phone. New Abbey is just a really great little village with everything you need close at hand. It has it's own pub, tea room and shop so you could park the car and never bother driving all week A good local bus service connects New Abbey to Dumfries and from there long distance coach and rail connections for onward travel
It's a picture postcard village, a tearoom, general stores and pub complete the picture
  • Stephen’s cottage is beautiful and very comfortable. New Abbey is a great place to base yourselves for exploring the Dumfries area. The communication from Stephen was excellent and I would highly recommend a stay in his lovey house.

  • The cottage is lovely, we spent 2 nights and have nothing negative to say. It was spotlessly clean, had a very homely feel to it and a very well equipped place. The information provided beforehand was very detailed. The cafe in New Abbey served great food and recomend the beach at RSPB Mereshead only a short drive away which is a great place to take a dog. All in all a great stay

  • Stephen’s place is peaceful and comfortable. The house is interestingly furnished and the beds make for a great nights rest. The shower is hot and a good strength. Stephen was a great host who replied promptly to any queries sent his way. The village of New Abbey is sweet and quiet. The tea room is lovely and the Sweetheart Abbey ruins very interesting. Many walks and cycling routes in the area. Beware the pub stopped doing food before October.

  • First of all it should be said that the host could not have been more helpful and is a person who goes out of their way to help. The cottage is ideally situated in New Abbey with lots of interesting places to visit close by. It has a lot of charm but at at the same time has all modern cons. The wifi is strong throughout the house, the heating keeps the place comfortable, good shower etc. In fact everything you would expect in your own home. I will no doubt be returning to this delightful cottage.

  • Port House is a top spot whether you are a couple or a family. Stephen's home caters for all and New Abbey is the perfect stepping stone to the many beautiful attractions Dumfries and Galloway has to offer. We will be returning... Perhaps a cosy winter break! Highly recommended.

  • A quirky old cottage in a charming village - I imagine it feeling very cosy in the autumn :) Super location for mountain bikers and those interested in mid-length walks in nature. Some great classy but casual places to eat out within a short drive.

On her death she was laid next to her husband's embalmed heart and the monks named the abbey in memory of her. Also within the village is a doctors surgery, small play park, football pitch, antique shop, Shambellie walled garden and associated walks as displayed in our photo gallery. The village is on a main bus route, ideal for catching a bus to go for a night out in Dumfries. Little Italy, Casa Mia, Hullabaloo, and Cavens are excellent places to eat. There is also an award winning links golf course and beach located at Southerness, which is approximately 7 miles from the cottage. The coast is approximately 3 miles from the cottage and is peppered with beautiful beaches, some are stoney others have miles of golden sand. Best Sandy Beach is called Sandyhills approx 9 miles from the cottage. This cottage is ideally situated for couples, families, groups of mountain bikers, walkers, bird watchers, golfers and beach lovers.Once you arrive in New Abbey, you really would not need to get back into your car, until you are ready to go home again. We are a family run business and have very high standards, please read our reviews for our established holiday property, listed as Burnbrae Mill. • Ideally proportioned cottage with quality appliances and tastefully decorated. Quaint and relaxing stay over the new year. Nearby walks all On your door step and everyone we met in the village was really friendly. Lovely touch leaving a home baked cake and bottle of wine with milk in the fridge on arrival . Especially loved the log/coal burner was lovely on a cold winters night.

  • Lovely traditional cottage in the heart of the village. Warm, cosy and well equipped. Beautiful Christmas decorations whilst we were there too. Loved the Victoria sponge!

    Matt2019-12-14T00:00:00Z
  • This cottage is lovely. There were 2 adults and 1 child (8) in our party. Everything about the place was wonderful and Suzanne is a great host. No concerns and will book again

    Des2019-12-08T00:00:00Z
  • We only stayed 2 nights but could have happily spent longer here. The cottage is in a lovely setting and is really well equipped for everything you might need. We were provided with lots of useful information on things to do nearby which was really helpful. Communication with Suzanne was always timely and friendly, she even sent us a message to let us know we could stay longer on the day we left which meant we didn't have to rush off in the morning. The whole place was completely clean and the beds were very comfy. Finding the cream cake in the fridge when we arrived was a fantastic surprise and it was delicious! I would definitely recommend a stay here.

    New Abbey, United Kingdom

This lovely cottage near New Abbey is in a peaceful setting next to a burn. It is situated on a seven acre property with a small loch (with fishing) and two neighbouring cottages. It has one bedroom, one bathroom, a sitting room with a wood-stove and a kitchen / diner opening onto a patio. Well situated – 2 miles from the picturesque village of New Abbey, 8 miles from Dumfries and 3 miles from the renowned Loch Arthur Farm Shop. Easy access to walking, mountain biking trails and fishing.
  • A wonderful little cottage in an idyllic setting. Spotlessly clean when we arrived, very well equipped and Barry had even left a small welcome pack for us from the local Loch Arthur Farm Shop which is well worth a visit. Good central heating, an abundance of hot water and a wood stove which was nice on a chilly evening. All in all a 10/10 property.

    Robert2020-03-09T00:00:00Z
  • We had a lovely stay. The cottage kitchen is probably the best equipped we have ever stayed in. It is in a lovely, peaceful location too, NOTE there is no mobile signal but that is fine if you want to escape, the wifi is great but you can keep that a secret. Barry was a great host, we really enjoyed meeting and chatting with him.

    New Abbey, Scotland, United Kingdom

Situated in the heart of the village this spacious holiday house lies in the quaint village of New Abbey close to the spectacular Solway Coast. Nearby is the Galloway Forest Park, a popular area for walkers/cyclists with mountain biking at Mabie Forest 1 mile away. There are numerous beaches along the coast.
New Abbey is a small village with the historic Sweetheart Abbey at its' centre. Historic Scotland manage the abbey and also the Cornmill.
  • I stayed here with 3 other bikers for a 3 nighter. Shop next door sells essentials, bread, newspapers, milk etc.. The pub across the road is very basic, oldy worldy and no longer serves food. Nearest place to eat is a taxi journey away at £15-£20 each way. The property is very clean with loads of room. The photos do not do it justice and was much better than we were expecting. Plenty of hot water and heating. Very clean white bedding (in twin room) and towels included. Highly recommended for those touring this wonderful area.

  • Had a fabulous time staying in New Abbey. The house was clean and very spacious (particularly upstairs). Great enclosed garden, perfect for sunbathing (we were lucky) and keeping dogs safe. House had everything you could need, beds were really comfortable. Shop next door was very handy too. Perfect base for exploring Dumfries.

    Louise2019-08-27T00:00:00Z
  • Spacious bedrooms. Plenty of space for clothes. Large bathroom with long bath plus a modern additional shower and toilet. Plenty of room for our group of 4 adults and 4 children. Had all the amenities we needed. We ate in several nights and all fit round the kitchen table. The garden is staggered with a nice grass area at the bottom with an outdoor eating area. Had a very enjoyable holiday.

    Catherine2019-08-23T00:00:00Z
  • We had a great time at Mhairi's place;I agree with other reviewers, the photos don't do it justice. The kids room is great and wait until they find the spinning chair! All rooms are a good size and have everything they need. Having the well-stocked shop next door is brilliant and the location is central for so many places. The secret garden with the river is beautiful and there is ample parking. We really recommend this place.

    Julie2019-08-14T00:00:00Z
  • The pictures of this place don’t do it justice. It was a fabulous weekend from start to finish. With 4 kids and 4 adults there was more than enough space and we truly had a wonderful time and can’t wait to come back.

    Steph2019-07-23T00:00:00Z
  • Limetree House really is a beautiful place to stay in a wonderfully quaint village in a relatively unexplored corner of Scotland. The photos do not do the house justice - the rooms are large and comfortable, the kitchen is very well equipped, the lounge has a very large TV with satellite and the rear garden area is very pretty overlooking a small river. There are so many walks and places to visit in the area we wished that we had more time to spend there. Overall, an excellent place to go with a family. Highly recommended.

    Rob2019-06-24T00:00:00Z

  • Great house, well equipped, clean and comfort, great WiFi, fantastic view. Every Thing you want for a short break

    David2019-07-22T00:00:00Z
  • Lovely! The photos do not do the cottage justice: the picture window and view is incredible, and it is great to have the picnic bench outside. Walking distance to the local pub, and lots of birds to watch.

    Liz2019-05-06T00:00:00Z
  • An absolutely lovely place to stay - relaxing and quiet yet close enough to the attractions in and around the area. We enjoyed being able to eat outside and the inside was spacious and the kitchen had everything we needed to cook meals. A great find and a wee gem of a house.

    Tracy2019-04-11T00:00:00Z
  • I have just spent a few days in this lovely place with friends. We had a good stay, we were warm and comfortable and the view was superb. The area is beautiful with lots of places to visit and countryside and coastline to enjoy. Highly recommended.

    Linda2018-11-16T00:00:00Z
  • A lovely spacious house, with a homely feel. The views are amazing, and there is plenty to do and see within easy striking distance.

    Tim2018-06-22T00:00:00Z
  • What an amazing location! Incredible views from the front of the house. It is in a very peaceful small community and deserves the respect due for such an area. The property is a very good size and was lovely and warm- we stayed during a fairly cold spell in March. Jamie communicates clearly and is very helpful. This property is especially suitable for bird-watchers and cyclists due to its location- but caters very well for most others too, including families, however it is probably not very suitable for those with mobility difficulties. It would be best to check with Jamie before booking if you think that this may be an issue. We had a lovely stay (three adults) and would be very happy to book here again.

    James2018-03-28T00:00:00Z
  • We spent a month in Jamie's cottage while watching the fantastic bird life along the Nith River out front and exploring the Dumfrisshire area for ancestor history. The cottage was roomy and modern inside but historic on the outside. It was so quiet that we were excited sometimes to hear a car drive by. It was well equipped for our needs and Jamie was very responsive to our requests. We were very pleased with our entire experience.

    Emma2020-02-10T00:00:00Z
  • Fantastic, comfortable and cosy cottage in a fabulous location with stunning views. The property was well appointed and had everything needed for a short or long stay. Jim and Caroline were great hosts and communication was speedy and thorough throughout. The shortbread, milk and other goodies left for our arrival were a lovely touch . The cottage was in a great location for exploring Dumfries and the surrounding area with Caerlaverock Castle and nature reserve just 10 mins drive away- both well worth a visit. The local Boathouse cafe/restaurant was lovely and a stone's throw from the cottage. All in all - a fantastic stay in a lovely cottage in beautiful surrounds.

    Leigh2020-01-03T00:00:00Z
  • This place is a wonderful place to stay if visiting the Dumfries area. We travelled from Canada to visit family who live in the area during Christmas. Caroline and Jim were fabulous hosts. Upon arrival, there was a tree up and Xmas decorations, so we didn’t have to do a thing. The cottage is very stylish and they have thought of everything. The views in the morning were beautiful. It is a calming area, but with quick access to dumfries. A beautiful restaurant, the both use, is right at your door step. This was a phenomenal air bnb 10/10! Highly recommended.

    Richard2019-12-27T00:00:00Z
  • We stayed at this amazing cottage for a long weekend in Dumfries and could not have been happier. The location and views from the cottage (especially at Sunset) were absolutely amazing. The cottage is beautifully furnished and equipped above and beyond what we expected. Jim and Caroline added some nice touches for our arrival, fresh flowers and the most amazing shortbread. The village is quite small, but the Nith Hotel offered great food and decent beer and we also had a nice breakfast at the Boathouse - so we were more than catered for. Communication all the way through was faultless and we will definitely be back. Great to meet you, Jim and thanks for a great weekend.

    Toby2019-11-10T00:00:00Z
  • This is a fantastic little cottage and if you are looking for something in the Dumfries area I suspect you will struggle to find much better. Recently renovated the cottage is stylishly decorated and lacks for nothing. Lovely toiletries are provided, fresh flowers were on the table and a bottle of wine and homemade shortbread awaited us. The house felt spacious and the beds were amazingly comfortable. Jim and Caroline were fantastic hosts and I really couldn't fault our visit.

    Kathleen2019-07-28T00:00:00Z
  • A beautiful, well equipped house in a beautiful location, we had everything we needed for a great stay, particularly appreciated the recommendations we got and all the little touches. The décor was fab, the beds were incredibly comfortable, we ate outside when the weather allowed and it was peaceful and relaxing. Great on the basics and pushed over the edge with the little things. Definitely worth a trip, will be recommending to our friends and family!

    Lynsey2019-07-07T00:00:00Z
  • A lovely place. Clean, comfortable and quiet, and a great location. Jim and Caroline were excellent hosts. We would be happy to stay there again whenever we are in the area.

    Keith2019-06-16T00:00:00Z
  • If you are planning a trip in the Dumfries area do not skip the opportunity to stay at Glensone. Upon entering the front door you will be struck by the stylish/modern decor, and the tranquil modern theme which flows throughout the home. The kitchen is beautifully equipped with all the conveniences you would expect and much more. Delicious homemade shortbread as well bread were provided, as well as other bits and bobs in the refrigerator. The lounge area with its two seater and three seater leather sofas were incredibly comfortable. Perfect for watching the television or marvelling the window view. The bedrooms are lovely and well appointed. The attention to detail does not stop in either bathroom. Each beautifully decorated and equipped with body wash, shampoos and conditioners. The walk in shower is heaven! Both Jim and Caroline were very quick to respond to questions before and during our stay. Very kind and courtesy couple. Prior to arriving I contacted them with a question about our upcoming stay. I let them know we were both looking forward to visiting Glensone and in passing mentioned we would be celebrating our first wedding anniversary while there. Upon our arrival there was a bottle of Prosecco and lovely card wishing us a happy anniversary. These are the little touches which made our stay fabulous, and why we cannot wait to return. That and the sunset....breathtaking! Stephanie & Sharon

  • We stayed at Abbey Cottage for my son and husband’s joint birthday weekend celebration. Our stay was so enjoyable and memorable. Andrew was a very personable, relaxed and thoughtful host and the cottage was ideal for our needs. The kitchen had everything we needed to cook evening meals in and it was nice to have a dining area - essential when you have a toddler! The offer of breakfast was a bonus too - we weren’t expecting it. The village is very pretty and it’s well located. Typical rural issues with phone reception - strong Vodafone and O2 but no EE in the cottage/village. Andrew offered WiFi from the lodge though. We enjoyed days out at Mabie Farm Park, Wigtown, Sandyhills and the beach opposite Steamboat inn. Abbey tea rooms were lovely too!

  • What a great place! We went for 2 nights and there was so much to do nearby. Andrew was such a welcoming host, nothing was too much trouble. He was able to suggest places to go and had lots of leaflets etc for us to browse through. The cottage was clean and there were toiletries available as well as tea, coffee etc. He made it very clear that The Lodge was also available to us and that we should feel free to use the communal areas as we wished. We can highly recommend this place!

    Kelly2018-08-30T00:00:00Z
  • Andrew was the nicest host you could ask for, lots of handy information about what to do and see. Would love to come back and see the progress on the bothy, think this will be an Airbnb hit. Dumfries and all the surrounding villages are just lovely, full of history and charm. Our family really appreciated the hospitality and we leave with some great memories.

Beautiful self contained apartment in grounds of a private equestrian small holding. Adjacent to the beach near Carsethorn on the Solway Coast, The Old Design Studio is the perfect place to relax & explore the natural beauty & interesting history of Dumfries & Galloway. The award winning Steamboat Inn is 400 metres along the beach. The large bedroom has King & 1 or 2 Singles, the lounge has a large sofa-bed. Includes microwave, toaster, kettle, fridge, egg cooker, washing machine NO HOB & OVEN!
Originally a farm built in the early part of the 19th century, South Carse became the home of designers Mark and Gaynor Ranshaw in 1992. For many years The Studio was used as the space in which to create the covers of thousands of Classical CDs and some of the original award winning paintings from this period adorn the walls, along with a massive classical and nostalgia music collection which guests are welcome to play on the Hi-Fi system. The Studio is warm in the winter (with electric radiators in each room and electric blankets on the King size and one of the Single beds) and the beautiful stone walls in the lounge make it cool in the hot summer months. Access to The Old Design Studio from the driveway is down 2 steps into the kitchenette and on through a lockable doorway to the well appointed lounge. The lounge has a large corner sofa that converts to a kingsize bed, occasional chair, coffee table, large desk/table, 32" TV, DVD Player and Hi-Fi with DAB radio tuner + Bluetooth (allowing guests to access music stored on their own mobile devices). There is a selection of DVDs plus huge collection of (mostly classical) CDs. The large bedroom which is accessed through an archway from the lounge was previously the main design studio and has both overhead and side natural light. It contains a kingsize bed plus either, 1 single bed and an Edwardian chaise longue for relaxing during the day, or an additional single bed by arrangement; plus plenty of drawer & hanging space. There is a digital alarm clock with radio plus a Roberts FM Radio. There is an extensive book collection and board games available for guest use. The newly equipped kitchenette contains a modern "Belfast style" Sink, Worktop, Microwave, Kettle, Toaster, Fridge/Freezer and Automatic Washing Machine. It does NOT have a cooker with hob & oven. There is a plug in multi cooker and electric egg boiler/poacher/omelette maker. There is a square breakfast table with 2 chairs. Guests are welcome to use the lawned gardens. During the summer months there will be a Gazebo with large table and charcoal BBQ for guests use in the gardens. The newly appointed shower room is accessed through folding doors (originally Victorian shutters) from the kitchenette and has shower, wash hand basin & WC. Vodaphone cell phone 4G reception is usually excellent but some other networks can be rather patchy. The Studio has free landline WiFi with speeds normally of 3-7mbps.
South Carse is the perfect location for those who enjoy birdwatching, walking, mountain biking, horse riding and golf (Southerness Championship Links course is a 10 minute drive away). The surrounding scenery is inspiring for artists. South Carse was originally a farm on the Arbigland Estate - film setting for the Oscar nominated film "The Wife" starring Glenn Close and Jonathan Pryce. It is Close to three of the Seven Stanes Mountain Biking routes (Dalbeattie, Mabie & Ae Forests) The food town of Castle Douglas is a 35 minute drive away and the "artist" town of Kircudbright is a little further along the coast. There are lovely walks along the coast and pretty coastal villages to explore nearby such as Sandyhills and Rockcliffe, plus the popular sailing village of Kippford. The Award Winning Farm shop at Loch Arthur is nearby and the delightful village of New Abbey the setting for Sweet Heart Abbey is 15 minutes down the road. Slightly further afield is the magnificent Drumlanrig Castle, and there are incredible gardens at Threave, Logan Botanical Gardens and Castle Kennedy. A drive to the booktown of Wigtown (renowned for its Book Festival and unique book shops) is a fabulous day out along the coast. Notes on Carsethorn (400 metres along the beach from South Carse) During the 18th and early 19th centuries, this small, tranquil coastal village was a busy port with regular sailings to Liverpool, The Isle of Man and Ireland. Some 21,000 emigrants left Scotland from here for a better life in the New World . But the arrival of the railway in Dumfries in 1850, along with the cost of the many improvements needed to navigate the channel, led to a gradual decline in seaborne trade and, by the early 1900s, there was very little left. Today, Carsethorn is a pretty village consisting of a line of cottages facing out across The Solway Firth. Almost certainly the biggest attraction in the village is The Steamboat Inn - a popular local hostelry with both residents and visitors alike, serving lunches, dinners, fine ales and spirits seven days a week, all year round. The local beaches and the bird-rich merse where millions of seabirds live or over-winter are part of the rich natural heritage of the parish. Visitors to the National Nature Reserve on the far side of the Nith come round by the coachload to watch birds on the Carsethorn foreshore, before continuing to the nature reserves at Southwick and Mersehead. And whilst the original pier is no more, the beach is frequently visited by pleasure boats and yachts, some of which anchor in the mouth of the burn north of the old pier.
  • Perfect base for exploring the Solway Coast. Friendly helpful host. Well equipped flat with many thoughtful touches.

    Michael2020-02-09T00:00:00Z
  • Lovely studio to stay in, very comfy and cosy. The bed was hard to get out of in the morning! Some very nice touches, fresh lemon curd and eggs. I sampled both :) A great area for walking, I took my dog. Gaynor very informative with lots of suggestions. Unfortunately no wifi this visit but that might have been a good thing!

    Francine2020-01-20T00:00:00Z
  • We were very happy to return to South Carse for the third time, and receive a lovely welcome from Gaynor. It was very rainy, but there are so many good books, CDs and DVDs in the studio, that it was actually very nice to make the most of them and enjoy sitting in the comfortable lounge. We did a great walk along the beach to Southerness Lighthouse, past Thirlstane rocks - you can just walk straight from the door.

    Katy2020-01-06T00:00:00Z
  • What a comfy & stylish space to stay in a great coastal location. Fab hosts too, really welcoming with lovely touches - fresh local eggs, bread & home-made lemon curd. Thank you!

    Caroline2019-11-24T00:00:00Z
  • Gaynor and Mark are relaxed and welcoming hosts. The Old Design Studio is a perfect location for a mellow stay on the Solway. The studio is immaculately clean and offers you everything that you would need for a chilled break....plus fresh eggs and homemade delicious lemon curd! Mark's fantastic artwork adorns the walls and the there are lots of books to flick through and CDs to listen to. Only 1 minute to the beach and a 400 metre walk along the shore to the Steamboat Inn...and great food! We will definitely return again and highly recommend it! Thanks both

  • We had a short but very nice stay here. It is an uncommon place with lots of Charme and has a Story to tell. Both hosts are really nice, friendly people. We had a very warm welcome with fresh eggs and other nice things. The heaters had been on and everything was well prepared. We felt really comfortable here and did totally enjoy our stay.

Curlew Lodge is named after the curlews that frequent the foreshore and the field in front of the chalets from autumn to early spring. It is slightly set apart from two other lodges - on the right as you look at them - with an orchard of fruit trees around it. This lodge has two bedrooms, one double and one twin.
Features of our The Curlew Lodge family holiday accommodation include: Broadband Wi-Fi (pay-as-u-go) so that you can stay in touch on holiday, 2 bedrooms with very comfortable beds with hotel grade mattresses. Open plan living room with kitchen, sitting/dining room and log burning stove Shower room, basin & toilet. Covered deck with garden furniture & barbecue. Disabled access. And the "essentials": Tv, dvd, books & games. Electric cooker, family sized fridge-freezer, microwave, washing machine & dishwasher. Gas fired central heating (allowance of 7 hours heating) Bedlinen and towels
"The Steamboat" pub in Carsethorn is a 5 minute walk along the beach. It does really good food and is dog friendly. You can also sit out on the water's edge. The Arbigland Estate is the ideal base for mountain biking (minutes from two of the 7 Stanes) Birdwatching (Mersehead 15 mins away) Golf (Southerness Championship Golf Course 10mins away) or collapsing and revelling in the amazing surroundings. The chalets are also close to the equestrian establishment of South Carse. You can bring your horse with you and keep him in the livery yard there so that you can enjoy riding on the beach and around the bridleways on the estate. If it's rows of identical cabins, discotheques and amusement arcades you want then look elsewhere! If you want to wake up to the sound of waves and seabirds and watch kestrels hover above cattle grazing in green meadows from your windows then this is the place for you.
  • The lodge is in a fantastic location for walks, scenery, and kids who love the beach! We went when the weather was terrible but once your inside the lodge it's very cosy. I would definitely use again if in that area again.

  • I booked this place by chance for a few days away. I didn't really know what to expect but after my stay i cannot compliment Jamie and the place enough. The place sits with another 2 lodges but they are not on top of each other. The lodge has ample parking, large sitting /dining area and open kitchen. The 2 bedrooms are fine and comfortable. There is a small deck and BBQ which is great to chill out. the grass area is great for kids and/or dog to run around. The beach is a 2 min walk away. the path to the beach could be an issue for elderly or those unsteady on their feet. Pub is 5 mins walk along the beach where you can sit outside and look onto the beach. They have water for the dog. The host Jamie is great. Nice guy and will attend to any issue. I always have reservations about going away to small lodges and wondering if it will suit all the family. Dont be concerned about this place...its great..go and have a few days away in a great wee place and you won't be disappointed

Rowan Cottage is an imposing end terraced villa situated on a delightful elevated site overlooking the Nith Estuary and within the national scenic area of outstanding beauty. The village has an excellent pub which serves food and a village shop. The cottage is only 5 miles from Dumfries town.

  • Had a lovely stay. The cottage was warm, clean and comfortable. We were a family of five, grandparents, parents and grandson. There was plenty of space to spread ourselves and also be together. The kitchen/dining area is really big, light and airy with a view of the fields and so many birds. No near neighbours and so quiet.

  • A spacious cottage set in a pretty garden. Lovely views over the fields from the light and airy kitchen and dining room. Great for birdwatchers and nature lovers as it's very close to Caerlaverock. Plenty of garden birds visiting the feeders outside the dining room window too. Two TVS, WiFi, and a logburner if the weather's bad and you want to stay indoors. A bathroom and separate shower room both with toilets, so no queues even with a full house. Well equipped kitchen. Off road parking for one car. We really enjoyed our long weekend and would like to stay there again.

  • A lovely, well presented cottage off the beaten track but with easy access to the "delights" of Dumfries 15 minutes drive away. The kitchen has all the utensils expected, and more. Plenty of crockery and cutlery. (Even sharp knives). Washer, tumble dryer and dishwasher for the chores and even a breadmaker for fresh bread with your breakfast bacon! For those who need to be in touch 24/7, the mobile signal on the two networks we use is non existent, but the WiFi is fast and consistent. There is a downstairs (double) bedroom with main bathroom adjacent. The upstairs has 2 bedrooms, one en-suite with a large and powerful shower. Both upstairs bedrooms have enormous views over the Solway and farmland.

  • We had an amazing weekend stay, the cottage was beautiful and so modern! Such a comfortable stay and could’ve stayed in all day. The view was lovely and such nice touches throughout the cottage. The location was perfect with restaurants near by and the supermarket was only a 10 minute drive away. Would definitely recommend it and will hopefully be back for another stay. Thank you to David and Kathleen for making us feel so welcome!

  • An amazing property that has been finished and maintained to an extremely high standard. Such high attention to detail to make this the nicest home from home. I could have sat all day and looked out the window at the stunning views.

  • This house is amazing! It feels like you're in a 5 star hotel - so luxurious and comfortable with loads of extra touches like toiletries and prosecco. It is really spacious and the cleanest house we've ever stayed in. The children couldn't believe that not only was there a TV in every bedroom, but they all had Netflix! What a treat! On top of all this is the superb location with a view you would never get bored of and which you can enjoy for hours on end from both inside and out. David and Kathleen are wonderfully welcoming hosts and although this was only a short visit we'll definitely be back for longer!

Sunny bedroom in a relaxed and friendly home. The room can sleep up to 3 people in a double bed and a single. The house, a converted barn built in the 1840s, is set in a lovely garden in a hamlet, one mile from the sea. Buses from Dumfries to Dalbeattie stop within 100m. Within 25 miles you will find bird reserves, many varied walks, interesting towns, good places to eat. Breakfasts are either vegetarian or vegan. We can provide evening meals if requested in advance (paid on arrival).
The main thing people enjoy here is the feeling of spaciousness and peace, and being able to spend time in the beautiful garden.
We live in a small village on the beautiful coastal route between Dumfries and Stranraer. The house is set back from the road in a beautiful garden, with nature trees. It is peaceful enough for us to run retreats here. There are a few houses in the village and we are a 20 minute walk from the pretty village of Carsethorn, which is on a sandy shore. The village is famous for its award-winning pub which serves very good evening meals and has outside tables looking across the water. Perfect on a summer's evening!
  • Sarah & Lucas are hosts with a great humanity & psychology, we had some great talks at breakfast and the room has a sunny lightful, was very comfortable.

  • This is a wonderful place to stay and exceeded expectations. It was much more spacious than photos can capture and so light and tranquil with beautiful views out of the windows including the beach which is 10 seconds walk away! The cabin was really cosy with a lovely wood burning stove and there was a welcome basket waiting for us when we arrived which was a lovely touch. We would love to visit again!

  • Lapwing lodge is in a beautiful location and provided everything we needed for a long weekend. My children are teenagers and it was a welcome break with no WiFi for electronics.. however others may feel that WiFi is important. We brought plenty of provisions and ate at twice at the Steamboat Inn. The closest shop is about 15 minutes away, which we didn’t use, but I would suggest stocking up for breakfasts etc when you are out and about. Overall a lovely and relaxing break with some lovely trips out and time at Sandyhills beach.

Located just off the breath-taking Solway Coast, there is plenty to see and do within the local area, meaning you don’t have to travel far for a day’s entertainment.
Laid out across one level, with 3 separate bedrooms, one en suite, the accommodation is accessible to all age groups and spacious enough that parents and grandparents can take some time whilst the children play at a relaxing and safe distance. The half-acre garden is an ideal space for children to let off some steam but do please note that there is an unfenced pond and stream located within the garden, so smaller children should not be left unsupervised. Travelling westward from the property you will find the Mersehead RSPB Reserve with it’s birdwatching hides and fabulous sandy beach walks and, further still, the picturesque fishing villages of Rockcliffe and Kippford, linked by a not-so-strenuous clifftop walk which offers unparalleled views over Rough Island, and the Solway Coast towards Wigtownshire. Eastwards towards Dumfries, you will find Sweetheart Abbey, founded in 1273 by the grieving widow Lady Dervorgilla of Galloway and Caerlaverock National Nature Reserve, home to a vast array of wetland birds and wildlife, as well as the mighty Caerlaverock Castle, a 13th Century triangular moated castle resembling something out of a fairy tale. Beyond Dumfries is Ellisland Museum and Farm, the idyllic home built by national Bard Robert Burns in 1788 and Mabie Forest and Farm park, a great day out for families with small children. This particular area is an ideal location for active holidaymakers with 7Stanes mountain biking at Kirroughtree, Dalbeattie and Ae Forests, sailing and Kayaking at Loch Ken Activity Centre and some fantastic walks, including Criffel Hill, rising 570 metres.
