Your guide to Moonee Beach

All About Moonee Beach

The seaside town of Moonee Beach lies in a largely rural region on the eastern edge of New South Wales’ South Pacific coastline. Primarily serving as a jumping-off point for access to the many nearby national parks, nature reserves, and beaches, Moonee Beach lies in the middle of some of Australia's most diverse rainforests that include rare palm species, whales, wallabies, and more than 80 species of birds.

The town itself is home to several accessible beaches that are popular with fishing enthusiasts and surfers. Rainforest walks, kayaking, and wildlife viewing are popular activities throughout the year in its surrounding wilderness areas. In addition to the outdoor opportunities provided, Moonee Beach has a public market, several dining options, and cafes available throughout town.

The best time to stay in a holiday rental in Moonee Beach

For the majority of the year, Moonee Beach has balmy daytime temperatures, but it gets quite a lot of rainfall during at least seven months of the year. The summer months provide the warmest air and pleasant ocean temperatures, but January and February also bring the highest levels of rainfall, so take this into consideration if you’re hoping to spend your days on the beach. You have the highest likelihood of experiencing sunny days during both the spring and fall, making this a popular time to book Moonee Beach accommodation. During October, nearby Coffs Harbour hosts the annual International Buskers and Comedy Festival where talented circus performers from all over the world come to perform for large crowds outside from morning until night.

Top things to do in Moonee Beach

Coffs Harbour

Take a 14-minute drive south to check out the seaside town with a 1970s vibe. A little Dutch theme park and a giant sculpture of a banana — ideal for selfies — are its focal points, but hidden gems like the North Coast Regional Botanic Garden and the National Cartoon Gallery are worth a visit. Seaside dining options serve up oysters on the half shell and wood-fired pizzas where you can enjoy the sunset, and a wooden boardwalk and chill beaches are open all year.

Ulidarra National Park

The Ulidarra National Park has several options for exploring the area's dense rainforests. Mountain bike paths, four-wheel-drive tracks, and several bushwalking trails are available to take you deep into the forest and explore the area. A rare and diverse ecology is protected in the park, with Booyong and Bangalow palms providing coverage for the koalas, owls, dingoes, and rare bat species that live here. Overall, over 232 species of vertebrates live in the park, providing ample opportunity for wildlife viewing.

Moonee Beach Nature Reserve

The Moonee Beach Nature Reserve is a pristine protected area of coastline where wild kangaroos roam freely on the hills. These pristine beaches provide opportunities to snorkel, dive, surf, swim, and kayak in the clean waters. Beachcombers and sunbathers will see many shorebird species like white-bellied sea eagles and brahminy kites, and rare migrating whales can be spotted during winter. Coastal rainforests stretch beyond the Look At Me Now headland, where you can take a 1.6-kilometre loop hike on the flat and paved trail.
