  • We loved staying here! The cabin is right on the beach. It was clean, cozy, and warm when we arrived with everything we needed to make ourselves dinner that evening. Had a great romantic getaway.

  • Adorable little cabin with spectacular views. We would definitely stay here again

  • Absolutely love this cottage. Everything you need (comfy bed, sweet space, gorgeous view) and nothing you don’t (meaning it is tiny but perfect). Especially loved the extra touches that made us feel not just the human, but also dog family were welcome. We feel so much peace and rejuvenation here. We will be definitely be back.

  • Such a wonderful little beach retreat! Exactly what my partner and I needed to get away for the weekend. Everything is clean and they had everything we needed. The view is phenomenal. The fireplace is so fun, but don’t do what we did and start the fire before you use the oven, it’s such a small place that it heats up fairly quickly. Luckily it was a cool and rainy weekend and opening up the door for a bit helped us cool down. Absolutely would stay here again, we loved it!

    Natalie2019-12-09T00:00:00Z
  • Definitely a great place with an AMAZING view! The set up of the cabin is so cozy. There's a huge nice window that makes you want to curl up with a warm beverage and look at the waves. I recommend this place for beach adventures, relaxing, reading, walking, and I would come back.

  • Loved our weekend getaway! The beach is steps away and it was very cozy. We did bring an extra blanket (because it’s December) which we used, it got a little chilly! The wood burning stove really warms up the place - don’t forget to bring your own firewood and newspaper! We are already looking at when we can go back again, such a magical place :)

    Alexandra2019-12-02T00:00:00Z
  • A quaint, clean, cozy respite from the day to day grind. Small, perfect for me and my puppy! Easy to keep clean, easy access to the beach and the ocean on magnificent display....and the sunsets reminded me of what is important in life. The stars at night? Brilliant and awe inspiring....reminding me that there is so much more going on that cell phones & social media cannot begin to capture ...

    Janie2019-11-30T00:00:00Z
  • This is such a gorgeous place to escape to. Small and cozy, this was such a great place to hunker down for a few days and unwind. One of the all time great place in this world to read a book. Clean and stylish, I loved it. Thanks for hosting.

This one bedroom, ocean front suite has spectacular beach and water views. The charming space has just been completely remodeled so everything is brand new and stylishly furnished. With one queen bed and a couch with a queen pull out bed it can accommodate up to 4 people. The kitchen is all set for you to cook your favorite meals or you can utilize the outdoor kitchen with gas bbq grill. The best part of staying here is having the beach as your back yard with ocean views that never grow old.
This is the perfect space for a couple or a family with small children. You'll have everything you need to enjoy a day at the beach or stay in and watch a few storms, or a few movies. -This is a dog friendly unit so your pup can join you on vacation. -You will have one designated parking spot. We do offer overflow parking if needed that is first come first serve.
  • Unit 1. Lovely place, looked newer and bigger than I expected from the pictures. Especially loved the kitchen with quality cooking utensils and appliances. As close to the beach as is possible, cozy warm place, perfect weekend getaway. The WiFi didn't work for several hours the first day, the hosts said it comes and goes frequently out there - note that if you really need reliable wifi/TV. Also cell service is pretty non existent (we have Sprint and Cricket), so beware. It was pretty quiet, which we enjoyed. We could hear the upstairs guests' kids running around but it wasn't bothersome to us... It might be for some depending on what you want from the stay. Overall it was a really comfortable place and would stay here again if we revisit Moclips!

  • Great place to stay. Very clean and great access to the beach. Very tastefully updated and all the comfots of home.

    James2020-03-01T00:00:00Z
  • Andrea and Gabrial's Beach House is absolutely amazing! We went for a weekend clamming trip and are very happy clammers indeed. The outdoor clam shack and shower makes cleaning up easy! Everything in the Beach House is so very clean, neatly renovated, and comfortable. We loved every second and will definitely be back when we get the opportunity.

    Jill2020-02-23T00:00:00Z
  • This was a very cute place to stay in Moclips. It was a great location to the beach and the space was adorable. We can’t wait to stay again!

    Tara2020-02-16T00:00:00Z
  • I have stayed in over 25 air B&B's in the states and abroad, and this is one of the very few that beat expectations. It I not the most lavish, or large, but it is exactly what is advertised....but better. It was so clean, and the kitchen so well stocked - actually ready to use and cook good meals. I never saw the host, or the property manager, and that is a great thing - I never needed them. Everything worked, everything was comfortable and it was just as quiet and quaint and close to the beach as we had hoped. If I ever return to this location, with my wife, and my family - this is the first place I will try to book.

    Sven2020-02-05T00:00:00Z
  • Amazing cottage right on the beach that has everything you could need. The kitchen was amazing and well stocked.

    Katharine2020-01-13T00:00:00Z
  • Excellent stay that exceeded expectations. Super comfortable, clean and on the beach. Communication from hosts was proactive.

    Bill2020-01-05T00:00:00Z
  • Clean, beautifully decorated, well outfitted studio that really is right on the beach. Nice firepit in the backyard, easy path to the beach, great parking right outside the door. You'll love it!

The newly remodeled Moclips Beach House has three bedrooms and 1 and 1/2 baths. The beach is right outside your door and the views from every room are breathtaking. The master includes a king bed and half bath, there is another bedroom with a queen sized bed and the third bedroom has a built in, twin sized bunk and a flat screen tv. The full bathroom has a washer and dryer for your convenience.
The Moclips Beach House Motel has been hosting guests since the 1940’s and even once served as backdrop in the John Wayne movie, McQ. This historic building is a cornerstone of Moclips and would be perfect for your next vacation! The fully updated kitchen has every amenity for cooking your family meals. You can dine outdoors on your private decks or indoors at the large dining table. When you're not enjoying the beach, you can watch the waves crash in from the large wall of picture windows in the great room. Enjoy a fire or a movie on the flat screen tv.
  • I have visited Ocean Shores for my birthday for years. Moclips is a bit north, but it is, by far, the best accommodation I have found in the area. The cottage is modern and clean and, honestly, every detail one could want has been thought of and accounted for. The walk to the beach is just a few steps away. There is an easy to use showering station for paws which we really appreciated. I can't wait to visit again and would move in if I could get away with it.

    Cassie2020-03-08T00:00:00Z
  • An awesome spot. We had one dog in tow and a 6,4, and 1 year old. Accommodations were perfect for the ages of our kids. We’ll return for sure!

    Jocelyn2020-02-20T00:00:00Z
  • An amazing place and fantastic location. The ocean and miles of beachcombing right outside the door and beautiful vistas from the wonderfully appointed and cozy apartment. We loved our time! Andrea and Gabriel were quick to respond to any question I had. Highly recommended 😊

    Cynthia2020-02-18T00:00:00Z
  • This place is amazing. It was perfect for our little getaway.

    Stephanie2020-01-26T00:00:00Z
  • This is one of the coziest classiest places on the northwest coast. The remodel is very tasteful and the space is absolutely perfect for a small group of adults or a family. It has so much seating and big windows, all the better to enjoy games on the stormy days and breathtaking views year round. The fireplace definitely warms the place up on the cold winter days and the kitchen is set up for any level of cooking or baking. We loved this place and will be back!

    Penney2020-01-19T00:00:00Z
  • Me and my family have stayed in many Airbnb’s, and this was by far our favorite. Loved the view of the ocean, the fireplace, full kitchen and very comfy beds! Our 4 year old loved the bunk beds and toys provided. All in all a very well thought out space.

    Ann2020-01-12T00:00:00Z
  • If you ever stayed here in the early 2010s, you’ll be blown away by the improvements. Still the amazing views - added a bathroom in the master, remodeled kitchen. Great for our family and our dog.

  • This townhome sits on top of a cliff with a nice view looking down at the beach and beautiful ocean waves (no direct beach access). Easy to access location directly off of the main highway. The SeaMist met all of our needs for a quick getaway. We traveled with an elderly person (89 years old) with difficulty walking long distances, but features such as the ramp to the front door, bedrooms/bathrooms on the main floor, walk-in shower with grab bars, gorgeous views from the living/dining/kitchen area made our stay easier.

    Donnie2019-12-14T00:00:00Z
  • Amazing view! House was clean and cozy. Kitchen was great for cooking.

    Phoebe2019-12-08T00:00:00Z
  • DeAnne's rental is now our all time Fav on AirBnB! It's so special one wants to keep it a secret! When we entered we thought the duplex must be brand new. No pet odors and the place was absolutely spotless! There was a pet basket by the door with towels, sheets, doggie. enzymes too. There was even a Christmas Tree with lights on in the living room. The view is gorgeous! There is everything you need, and neatly organized with photos on the cupboard doors so your not left wondering where you got that dish from! And the big soaking tub is so relaxing with plenty of hot water. Absolute 10 days of bliss!!

    Jack2019-12-04T00:00:00Z
  • We had an absolutely wonderful time. The ocean view is gorgeous, the house is clean and beautifully and comfortably furnished with everything you could possibly want or need for a fantastic stay. The hosts are very responsive and generous with their time. Highly recommended!

  • House was everything we needed for a weekend getaway from Seattle with our East Coast visitors. House was sparkling clean, fire place was warm and cozy, decor was cute and the view is priceless.

    Ashley2020-01-20T00:00:00Z
  • Wonderful time! Outdoor hot tub, beautiful view, and proximity to the beach were our favorite aspects.

    Roseann2019-12-29T00:00:00Z
  • Amazing sunsets! We spent Thanksgiving here and words can't describe how beautiful it is! The beach is right outside the front door! We had perfect weather sunny everyday. We saw whales go by and sea lions playing in the surf. Gorgeous views right from the couch! Nice fireplace. We loved that we were able to bring our little dogs as well. We were very comfortable and wish it hadn't t as Ken us so long to discover this gem!

    Helen2019-12-02T00:00:00Z
  • This place was just perfect for our getaway needs. The location--a short easy walk down a dune trail to the beach, in the 'chillest-of-the-chill' Moclips--simply could not have been better. The Lighthouse itself is a sweet and nicely maintained beach home with lots of windows facing the water, a great hot tub, a hose to spray the sand off of everything, a very nicely appointed kitchen (hooray for big pots! Hooray for sharp knives!). The communication from the host couldn't have been better or quicker. All in all it was an easy, fun trip, thanks to this great host and this find property!

    Scott2019-11-25T00:00:00Z
  • A gorgeous house right on the coast with a fun quaint style. The view was gorgeous and quick responses from Rick and Tammy made it easy to book and work out details.

  • I had a very comfortable time at Pacific Beach. The house was very clean, and well stocked with pots and pans. The deck is a nice place to enjoy the breeze and watch the waves come in. There’s a towel warmer in the bathroom downstairs. It’s the little things that make this spot great! There’s a convenience store a stone’s throw away with a pretty impressive selection of food, drink, and hardware (live bait, bike pumps, you name it). I was only there for two days in March, but I’ll certainly keep the location in mind for the future when I feel like getting away from the business of city life. I got around quite easily without a car. It’s a quiet town, spectacular sunsets. Highly recommend.

  • This is an incredible accommodation managed by a very professional agency. We had an initial glitch in that when we arrived the placed had not been cleaned and prepared from the last renter. There had been miscommunication between the on-site hosts and the agency. It was quickly resolved and the agency sent us to dinner on them. It was off season and the only place that wasn’t a significant drive was quite pricey, yet Evolve paid without batting an eye. Steve even brought us a bottle of superb Washington wine and apology note. This location in perfect for those wanting to have easy access to the ocean and the rainforest. The accommodation was fun and had everything we needed. I suggest communicating with Steve vis text as the cellular service is iffy. Hope to return to the area with more family!

  • A clean, convenient home base to plan your trip to the peninsula around. Everything was as described, and Marie was helpful and quick in her responses. If we ever decided to stay in Moclips again, we would definitely consider the Sandy Toes Loft.

  • This place was GLORIOUS. Steps from the beach. Clean and airy with an amazingly comfy bed. In unit w/d a big plus. The beach is beautiful as is the enchanted forest. Quinault Rainforest is just 30 min. away and perfect for a day trip. Wish we could've stayed longer!

  • This place was perfect for our Ladies Beach Retreat! The beach was RIGHT THERE. Sunsets were gorgeous. The house was adorable and cozy with the fireplace. I felt it fit us four girls well. The hot tub was perfect to have in the evenings. They even had kites that we used (My inner 7 year old was happy about that). And having the key box the house was really nice so we didn't have to drive the extra distance to the office to pick up the key. For those wanting to focus on beach views and away from technology, this place is a good fit. They also do still have a DVD player if some movie time is needed.

  • The house is very comfortable and well designed. The windows look out over the ocean, which is only a couple hundred yards from the house. There were 4 adults in my group, and there was enough seating and sleeping space for everyone. The house is beautifully decorated, and heated well with the gas fireplace. It's a lovely home, and I'd stay there again!

  • Rick’s place was perfect for a weekend getaway on the beach! It is super clean, the kitchen has everything you would need to prepare meals, the decor is really charming, the loft bedroom is so cozy and was great for the kids! We didn’t get a chance to use the hot tub but it was super clean too and perfectly heated. We would definitely book Rick’s place again in the future!

  • This lovely home is a treat. Back off the beach in a quiet neighborhood, it offered the peace and rest we needed. From the living room, there is a beautiful view of the ocean. This older home is tiny but comfortably slept 4 of us. I wouldn't hesitate to add two more of our family members next time. The owner was great at communicating through e-mail, and phone. She even anticipated needs that we would have in her final communication with us before our trip. We would definitely come here again!!

At 'Daybreak on Sunset' you will enjoy the beautiful panoramic views of the ocean while relaxing in our beachfront home anytime of the year. We are right on the beach. You are steps away from having sand in your toes and appreciating everything the beach has to offer. Bask in the scenery of the rolling waves, looking through our large windows or out on the wraparound ocean side deck. Daybreak is wonderful for a couples getaway, girls weekend, family vacation or just getting out of town.
Our home has an open concept design. The living room, kitchen and dining areas are located facing the ocean with the most incredible views of the waves and sunsets. There are no roads to cross, and just a few private steps down off the deck until you are walking on the beach. Gorgeous views on an unspoiled quiet beach are ready for your enjoyment. Daybreak on Sunset can comfortably sleep 1-6 people. Upstairs you will have a breathtaking view from our large master loft bedroom with a queen bed with a full bathroom. Downstairs there are two bedrooms and a full bathroom. One room has a queen size bed, while the other has a full size bed along with a twin bed.
It's a relatively quiet and peaceful neighborhood. We have very little traffic on the road in front of our home because it is not a through street. There are only about 10 homes that are accessible from our street. Please be respectful of the neighbors as there are a few full time residents here. Noise should be kept to a minimum in later evening hours and very early hours. You will find that holidays such as July 4th and New Years are a bit louder here.
  • If you are thinking about booking, stop thinking and book now. It’s a gorgeous place, nice big house with huge open windows and an absolutely stunning beachfront view. It was just the getaway we needed!

  • Great place to stay and relax. Beautifully appointed home right on the beach. Lots of nice touches that makes the home feel much more like a first class experience than a standard "beach house". Highly recommended.

  • This is our second trip to Jodi's home, and it was just as great as the first.... awesome locations, and nice amenities like dog toys/blankets, Keurig, games/puzzles, fireplace, etc.

    Leanna2019-12-24T00:00:00Z
  • We had a wonderful stay at Jodi’s! We loved having our own beds and the high ceilings made the common area feel spacious. We cooked all our meals and there are plenty of pots/pans/cooking utensils - just make sure you bring your own oil/spices (they have salt and pepper). You’re mere steps from the beach during the day and can hear the waves while you enjoy the electric fire pit at night. What a treat and restful time away. Thanks again Jodi!!

  • Beach Harmony is right at the end of the road on a terrific beach. Getting supplies was tricky as there are not many groceries unless you bring them in or drive about 1/2 an hour. If you are prepared, life is good. Ocean Crest Resort restaurant is incredible.

    Margaret2019-09-26T00:00:00Z
  • Very close to the beach. Direct view is of a house across the street but you can see ocean on either side. The downstairs living space is great for those needing a separate living space, with it's own private bathroom. Bedding and towels of exceptional quality. Very well-stocked kitchen for cooking and eating. Very quiet and peaceful, though we were there in the shoulder season. Close drive to the Quinalt rain forest and several world record trees.

  • Beautiful view of the Pacific Ocean from this property! It was a great place for us to celebrate my father in law’s 70th birthday!

    Kristi2020-03-08T00:00:00Z
  • This home is great. The kitchen is well stocked minus things like Saran Wrap, tin foil, and baggies etc. If you would like an outdoor fire, bring wood and plenty of fire starting materials like paper or kindling. Great place. Very cozy and wonderful view. We would definitely go back to this vacation home.

    Krissy2020-02-24T00:00:00Z
  • Expect a spacious and sunny space. Main floor bedrooms that face the ocean each have their own porch access and en suite bathrooms. The kitchen is fully stocked with nearly everything you will need to prepare and cook food. There is a small grocery store nearby if you need something quick, but I would stop at a larger grocery store on your way in to town first. There is a fire pit out back facing the ocean and there is wood too! There is no beach access directly from the house, you'll find that you're up a steep cliff. Beach access is a VERY short drive from the house. Enjoy this space and the surrounding area to the fullest.

    Jamie2019-11-30T00:00:00Z
  • This place was spectacular. Clean, spacious And one of the best views up and down the coast. We will definitely stay there again.

    Bryan2019-11-27T00:00:00Z
  • This location is accommodating to those with a variety of interests. Plenty of books to read, games to play and close to the beaches for beachcombers. Providing for the special needs of wheelchair accessibility and being pet friendly was a huge plus. Very comfortable and perfect for the larger families.

    Jeannie2019-11-25T00:00:00Z
  • We enjoyed our stay, feeling the house was clean, well-equipped, comfortable and spacious. The kids liked the bunk beds, board games and movies. I don’t remember whether it was listed as fully accessible, but it’s definitely amenable to a wheelchair. It was easy to walk next door for a good dinner at the Ocean Crest restaurant, but it’s otherwise safest and more pleasant to walk along the beach if you’re heading out to Moclips or Pacific Beach car-free. Overall a fun trip, and a great spot to watch storms.

    Dan2019-11-12T00:00:00Z
  • Great location right in the center of Moclips area. Secluded lot, very private. Open loft layout with high ceilings.

    Wes2019-10-13T00:00:00Z
  • What a great location- perfect spot for two families!! The two master suites both have great views and space to sprawl out. The other two bedrooms are perfect kids spaces. It should be noted that the arrangement is currently incorrect on the site for beds. The downstairs third bedroom has one queen and upstairs is a room with one queen and a bunk bed (all in one room) worked great for our group though. Laundry on site was so nice for a beach trip. The fire pit was soo nice to sit around at night and enjoy sunsets over the water. We found it very easy to get down to the beach using the neighboring hotels stairs. Not sure if using those stairs is “allowed” but we went up and down multiple times a day without any issues. The beach is so beautiful, low key and sandy for long walks. Be aware moclips has very little as far as restaurants go but that’s part of the charm. Can’t wait to stay here again. A perfect weekend that I would happily repeat

  • The space was amazing! The views were spectacular. Short walk to the beach. Will definitely come back for a 2nd, 3rd, etc... stay!

  • This place is a real find! Super comfy king size bed, fenced yard (a real plus when you have dogs...hard to find in Moclips), and steps from the beach. The space inside is a lot bigger than the pictures appear.... house is toward the end of the street, so it is pretty quiet, too.

    Leanna2020-02-17T00:00:00Z
  • The location is great. The house is roomy, clean and comfy. Everything we needed was provided and we really appreciated that there were sand toys for my son to take to the beach. Highly recommended!

  • We came down from Seattle for a long weekend and couldn't have been happier with finding this little gem. Carrie was amazing w/ recommendations and communication about getting in and out of the house, and the house was beyond our expectations in terms of how much space there was and how clean it was! We're already talking about our next visit!

    Ryan2020-01-12T00:00:00Z
  • Amazing home to visit the beach with your family! We brought our dogs and they loved the fully fenced backyard. The beach is a close walk and the home had incredible views from its deck! Carrie was a wonderful host and her home was just lovely, we will definitely be back!

    Jewely2020-01-01T00:00:00Z
  • The Baymen has amazing ocean views. We loved having coffee in the morning and watching the waves. We even cracked the sliding glass door to bring in the sound of the ocean. So nice. The space was super clean and larger than we anticipated from the photos - lots of room to spread out. We visited both the Hoh Rainforest in Olympic National Park and Cannon Beach, Oregon on this trip. Both were about a two hour drive. The host provided good advice on picking up groceries on our way there and gave specific and helpful instructions on check in. Much appreciated!

    Lou Anne2019-12-23T00:00:00Z
  • Carrie was a wonderful hostess who took the time to walk us through our first Airbnb experience. The home was lovely and I have never slept so well in my life. The bed was so heavenly; my husband and I tried to look up the make/model to buy it!! The location was so close to the beach that early morning walks were as easy as going out the front door. The pictures don't do it justice. Book this one and enjoy!

  • Fantastic location and perfect space for larger groups/families. The kitchen is large and well appointed. Big windows look right out to the ocean, and the dog toys and bed were particularly nice to see!

  • We loved our stay! Everything was so easy with a baby, it really let us relax and unwind with good friends. We tried clamming, but our big catch was an inch long. We had a good laugh and a great time trying. Rick made it easy to enjoy ourselves with good tips and thoughtful touches.

The Ocean House is unmatched for summer beach fun or romantic winter storm watching. It is a one-of-a-kind timbered refuge in a lush rain forest on the WA Coast, among the highest-rated Airbnbs in Washington. Heated wood floors. High wood ceilings. Roaring surf out every window. Miles of beach out the back door and down a stairway through an enchanted forest. Close to Seabrook, great restaurants, Olympic National Park, Lake Quinault Lodge, Beaches 1 - 4, and Ocean Shores.
CORONAVIRUS PRECAUTIONS: New House Rules prohibit anyone with any symptoms of illness (cold/flu/cough/sore throat) or possible Caronavirus exposure from checking in. The Ocean House will fully refund its charges even for last-minute cancellations due to illness/Caronavirus exposure. We have also imposed a two-night buffer between check-outs and check-ins. Guests have the entire house to themselves - all three amazing floors - and a uniquely beautiful and peaceful 4.5-acre forest-to-dunes compound. The property is laced with delightful rainforest trails and features several stunning viewpoints, as well as a magnificent 190-step stairway leading through weather-sculpted Spruce and Alders to our private beach entrance. Only the Boathouse interior is off-limits to guests. The Ocean House has five very clean and comfortable beds: a king, three queens, and a double. There are bathrooms on all three floors. The top floor is one of the most romantic and relaxing rooms anywhere, showcasing the Ocean House's exceptional architecture. The 17' high timber-framed wood ceiling of Fir and reclaimed Cedar is magical in the light of six dimmable custom art glass fixtures. A classic Mission California king bed and a deluxe iron frame double bed both offer world-class ocean and forest views. Work or relax over coffee or a glass of wine at a small wooden table with two chairs overlooking the ocean and forest. The third floor has its own bathroom and shower. The main floor has a bathroom, fully equipped kitchen, large dining table, leather couch, leather club chair, deluxe Queen size all-wood Murphy bed, Internet-enabled television, and an EXCELLENT stereo - bring your music! Like the other two floors, the lower floor has beautiful heated Fir floors and high, timbered ceilings of Fir and Cedar. The lower floor also has two Queen-size, all-wood Murphy beds, romantic art glass lighting, wonderful forest views, a steam shower, a television, well-stocked game closet, and a washer and drier. All five beds in the Ocean House are super-comfortable, fresh, and clean. Twenty-three beautiful art glass fixtures, representing the ocean, fire, love, and mystery, accentuate the natural beauty of the Ocean House and its environment, all custom-designed and created for the Ocean House by Seattle glass artist James M. Curtis III. TWO-FLOOR OPTION: Guests wanting to use only the main floor and the lower floor (3 Queen beds), and not the third floor, may send a request for the Two-Floor Option and I will send a pricing offer that is 35% less than the then-applicable full house rate. The kitchen includes staples like a microwave, electric teapot, toaster, coffee grinder and a French Press, as well as some nice extras like a deluxe double-sided commercial waffle iron, a panini press, large crockpot, a Nespresso espresso machine and a Nespresso milk frother. Guests also have full access to a gas BBQ on the back deck overlooking the ocean. The refrigerator is kept relatively empty for guest use. The indoor fireplace is off-limits for safety and insurance reasons, but the outdoor fireplace in the timbered shelter is yours to enjoy for s'mores, roasting hot dogs or just sharing the incredible views and a beverage or two with friends and family. You'll find plenty of firewood in our woodsheds, and usually a fully loaded wheelbarrow ready to roll out to the shelter. A sliding French door on the main level leads to a covered deck with beautiful ocean views framed through a Sitka Spruce forest. The large Boathouse deck at the bottom of the beach stairs has a perfect, up-close view of the ocean and is generally warmer than the rest of the property and downright balmy on a sunny day. Our forest stretches from the coastal highway to the sandy, grassy dunes of Moclips Beach. You can walk almost two miles in either direction from our private beach gate. Go left to the south on the beach as far as Joe Creek and get a latte and a kite in Pacific Beach. Head north up the beach to the Moclips River and the heart of historic Moclips, where trains brought tourists for many years starting in the early 1900s. The Shelter is a timbered structure with a stone fireplace that looks out over the ocean from a large cleared area we call the Park. The Park is great for tossing one of our many frisbees and other flying disks. We also have footballs, baseballs and gloves and even a volleyball net. There are approximately 2,000 feet of winding, mossy rain forest trails on the property - Matthew's Trail, Stephanie's Trail, the Bluff Trail, the Park Trail, the Shelter Trail, the Shed Trail and Guido's Trail. The trails lead to three dramatic bluff viewpoints overlooking the Pacific, take you among dizzyingly tall Sitka Spruce and Cedar trees and cut through dense coastal undergrowth, primarily ferns and Salal and Huckleberry bushes. They provide endless safe exploration and adventure for kids and a surprisingly therapeutic escape for adults. Tip - make yourself a latte with the Ocean House Nespresso machine and start your morning by walking the entire trail network. Caution - stay out of the forest in high winds, as branches may fall from very high and can cause serious injury. And please only admire - do not disturb or remove any of our cool fungi from the forest and be respectful of our wildlife.
Check out our Airbnb Guidebook for everything to do in the area - restaurants, bars, beaches, national park highlights, family activities, cultural attractions, and shopping options. A binder of guest info at the house has phone numbers, menus and other info for most of the following places so you can call in orders or reservations or check hours and availability. The binder also includes maps of hiking trails and other local sights and features. THE OCEAN CREST. Just four driveways to the north of the Ocean House is the best and fanciest restaurant on the entire Washington Coast - the Ocean Crest Resort and Restaurant. Highly recommend, especially for date night or any special event - or even just some drinks and appetizers in the bar. SEABROOK. And just about a mile directly to the south of the Ocean House on Hwy 109 is the awesome new town called Seabrook, which has a great restaurant called the Mill 109, as well outstanding pizza at Frontager's Pizza, a fun wine and cheese bar, and the best little grocery store in the neighborhood, among many other amenities. Great for bike riding, skateboarding, shooting hoops, hiking and exploring. You can rent bikes at Buck's bikes and he'll show you the riding and hiking trails he's building. PACIFIC BEACH. The little town of Pacific Beach is about a mile away. Head right out of the driveway and take a right at the four way stop. We love Emily's Bakery, the Hi-Flyers Kite Shop (great lattes at great prices), the Surf's Up Coffee Shop (great lattes, waffles, ice cream, pastries, clam chowder...), the Wacky Warehouse and the two convenience stores. If you want to enjoy Emily's incredible baked goods - get there early! Jim sells out of many of his best items quickly. GROCERIES - bring what you can, especially fresh vegetables and meats. We have two stores in Pacific Beach and Seabrook has a nice little store, but if you're cooking in, get your groceries in the big city first.... Ocean Shores has a bigger and slightly better grocer store if you're in a pinch for something. That's about a 25 minute drive to the south. On your way in, assuming you take Ocean Beach Road, at Copalis Crossing you'll see Voss Acres Produce Market - an excellent stop for fresh fruits and vegetables and other miscellaneous grocery items. LAKE QUINAULT. The Western Approach to the Olympic National Forest is just 35 minutes away via the incredibly scenic Moclips Highway. Enjoy a great meal at the Lake Quinault Lodge and enjoy any number of wonderful old growth hiking trails just across the street from the lodge. To get there, go left out of the driveway for several miles through the town of Moclips. Take a right at the Moclips Highway. In about 23 miles go left on Hwy 101 for about 6 miles and take a right into the Olympic National Park - it's that easy! KALALOCH LODGE. Head north of the Lake Quinault area on Hyw 109 for a fantastic visit to Beaches 1 - 4 and a so-so lunch at the Kalaloch Lodge. OCEAN SHORES. There's lots of family fun in Ocean Shores, just 20 minutes south - go carts, putt-putt golf, a movie theater and some great bars and restaurants. The Galway Bay Irish Bar is always a fun stop (and kid friendly) and Mike's Seafood is pretty awesome. I'm also partial to the Elk Head Tap Room in Ocean Shores. THE SEAGATE. Looking for some good bar food, a late night drink and some pool super close? The Seagate Bar and Restaurant just across the highway and a few hundred feet to the south is where you'll find some friendly locals to enjoy a drink or two with. The food there is also pretty good, especially breakfast Sat and Sun morning when my friend Rudy is cooking. While I walk the short distance there myself at night, it's a dark and somewhat dangerous stretch of highway, best to drive - or bring flashlights and be very, very careful to avoid being hit. FISHING. If you'd like to drop some cash on excellent guided fishing on the Quinault River, let me know and I'll check with my tribal fishing guide Richard Obi. That's just about a half hour from the Ocean House via the Moclips Highway. CHEAP BURGERS, DOGS, PIZZA AND FISH AND CHIPS. The best cheap eats in Moclips may well be the burgers, fries, onion rings and other fast food items at the Moclips Grocery. They also make fantastic pizzas that you bake yourself. Go left out of the driveway and the Moclips Grocery is just about 1.5 miles down on the left. TERIYAKI - Another ok cheap option is the Teriyaki kitchen at the You and I Market in Pacific Beach, a mile to the south. BOWLING. And here's the final big secret - on Friday and Saturday nights, there's an awesome mini bowling alley called Dewdrop Lanes that opens up at the Pacific Beach Conference Center and Resort, known locally as the Navy Base. To get there just take a right outside the driveway, go a few hundred feet and take a right where a sign says Beach Access and then a quick left onto the road that parallels Hwy 109. The Navy Base is on the right. Go in the front entry and ask about bowling. You'll love it!
  • Paul's beautiful place is a real treasure on this spectacular part of the Washington coast. The home is situated on a very private and magical property with an absolutely stunning view of the ocean. This is a wonderful spot to rest, reflect, reinvigorate, read, write, walk for miles along the wide and wild beach. We loved the mossy paths around the property, the various spots to sit overlooking the beach, the outdoor fireplace, the 167 steps down to the beach (and if you're not into that, you can drive a few block down the road and take your car right onto the beach--but the steps are a great workout!). Paul's home is impeccably clean and stocked with lots of fluffy towels and very comfortable beds, along with a fully stocked kitchen. And the view is breathtaking! Yes, there are two T.V.'s and WiFi, but we were happy to disconnect. It's a cozy, warm and comfortable home--and falling asleep to the sound of the ocean is incredibly soothing for a great night's sleep. Paul is a first-rate host, very responsive and helpful. We cannot wait to return!

    Richard2020-02-18T00:00:00Z
  • Paul's place is INCREDIBLE. I had a wonderful time enjoying the space and the amazing surroundings. The house itself and the property are beautiful and Paul was extremely thoughtful about making sure I had everything I needed for my stay before and during the time I was there. I can't recommend this spot highly enough. The access to the beach and the trails and fire place are all wonderful.

    Melanie2020-02-03T00:00:00Z
  • This Air BnB offering sets the standard. Everything from the stellar host who totally deserves the Super Host title to the smallest details – it is here. Of course the Pacific Coast is the draw but this property from which to enjoy it, makes the stay all the better. Exceeded our expectations at every level!

    Phil2019-12-30T00:00:00Z
  • The Ocean House at Moclips definitely exceeded our expectations. From the host communications pre-trip, to check-in, to the property itself and communications and responsiveness throughout, it really was a 5 star experience. I would recommend this property to couples or families equally, great place to unwind.

    Dale2019-11-29T00:00:00Z
  • Paul’s oceanfront home is one of the most spectacular places I’ve ever been! The view is amazing, then add one of those cloudless sunsets....simply stunning. Paul has thought of it all, the paths that circle around the house had the kids busy for hours! The stairway down a lush embankment to a peaceful beach was an impressive work of architecture. The side yard for games was also home to the fire hut which Paul had set up for us in advance. Wine, sunset, and fire to keep us toasty! Very generous :) For every meal we would head to Seabrook! An adorable town with great food and shops and it was only 5 minutes to Paul’s house. The proximity to town and the seclusion of the house made the perfect combination for great weekend without all the driving. Thanks again Paul for sharing your little slice of heaven with us! Truly a magical place to visit!

    Heather2019-09-30T00:00:00Z
  • A really fantastic place. No room left for desites.

    Baldur2019-09-27T00:00:00Z
  • The Ocean House is pure magic! It’s serene, cozy, and set up in all the best ways to relax or to go on adventures. The view of the water through the trees is breathtaking. There are numerous hiking paths with beautiful outlook areas. The walk down the stairs to the beach is beautiful and easy. The walk back up is fabulous exercise. The house itself is beautifully crafted. We walked to Seabrook along the water to get lunch one day. So fun! The Ocean Crest Resort is just 5 minutes down the road and has delicious food and fabulous service. Paul was extremely thoughtful and responsive. He thought of everything! I highly recommend this vacation house.

    Chloe2019-09-22T00:00:00Z
  • Paul's place is staggeringly beautiful. It was hard to leave the property--the house, the views, and the slice of beach were a joy, rain or sun.

  • We were thrilled with our stay at Hazel’s place! The view of the ocean is remarkable right from the living room! We enjoyed beautiful sunsets, fires on the beach, morning coffee on the deck, and star gazing in the hot tub. The location is fabulous as well as the sandy stretch of beach. It’s about a 30 minute drive to Ocean Shores, and just 8 minutes to Seabrook. Which made it easy to enjoy both going out for meals and coffee as well as cooking in the well equipped kitchen. The bathroom was well stocked with clean towels and beds were very comfortable. Hazel’s place exceeded our expectations and I would be happy to return!

  • This place was completely adorable. My partner and I were looking for a romantic getaway weekend where we could just spend a bunch of low-key time together, and this was perfect. Our hosts were super helpful and quick to reply. When we arrived, we got in late to lights already on waiting for us and a heated place, which we hadn't expected. It was so welcoming. The kitchen was great for cooking our dinner in--stocked and easy to use, we loved the wood stove fireplace, and the bed was so comfortable I pretty much didn't want to leave it. It was also only a few miles from beach access, and the beach was gorgeous. I almost couldn't bear to leave this place. We'll 100% be coming back next time we're able, and hopefully for an even longer stay.

  • This was our second time staying at Fernando and Nichole’s beautiful, relaxing, inviting, adorable cabin. This feels like a home away from home and all our city life worries just melted away the minute we drove up. The kitchen is stocked and easy to cook in, the indoor and outdoor fires were glorious, and the bed is one of the most comfortable we’ve ever experienced. If you are thinking about staying here do not think twice. A truly magical weekend!

  • Beautiful, quiet cabin that has everything you need! Well stocked, the homeowners really paid attention to every detail. We will definitely be back in the future!

  • The cabin is spotless and decorated perfectly. Cabin is quaint, cozy, and stocked with plenty of supplies to accommodate your stay. Public beach access in only a few minutes away as well. Highly recommend this place if you're looking for a quiet getaway!

  • Cozy and adorable! Well stocked, great isolated and peaceful location with blissfully little cell service :) Close to beaches and yet very relaxing to be off the beaten path. Be prepared for a charmingly rustic experience -thankful for the Woodstove and our fire-building skills because we lost power for a bit and had a cozy old fashioned evening by the fire without any way to cook dinner until it came back on, but we made do. Loved this place so much, plan to return, would highly recommend to others.

    Meagan2020-02-14T00:00:00Z
  • Just a serene, cozy cabin nestled deep in the woods. The kitchen is well-stocked with all the utensils we needed for cooking and the wood stove was warm and romantic. The record selection has a nice variety, too! We didn’t plan on doing much during our escape, and this cabin facilitated that really well. It was one of the calmest, quietest, most peaceful times my fiancée and I have shared in a long time. We’ll be back!

    Justin2020-02-09T00:00:00Z
  • Fernando and Nichole's cabin is heaven on earth. It is everything you could possibly want for a relaxing stay in the woods. We love reading by the wood-burning stove and watching the hummingbirds at the feeder with our morning coffee. They had excellent communication and checked in during our stay just to make sure everything was going well (and of course it was!) I couldn't imagine a more perfect stay. Thank again, Fernando and Nichole for everything.

  • My family had an absolutely wonderful time at Beach Dream South! The home was warm, comfortable, and had everything we needed. It was relaxing and refreshing! And yes, the beach is really that close! It was amazing. I hope to come back here many times. Of all the places we've stayed, this is our new favorite.

  • I loved the property. Amazing! I mean ... private beach access, ping pong, soft beds, and quiet. A perfect retreat.

    Daren2019-10-06T00:00:00Z
  • The house is great. Laid out very nicely. Easily accommodated my family of 4 plus grandma. Everyone was cozy. The cell phone service is non existent and wifi is spotty. Be warned before you go. No phone or TV. TV is 1-13. Not big deals but if you have phone calls to make while there or someone else needs to get ahold of you you'll need to make them in town. The hot tub is very very nice. And you can see the ocean from the tub by sitting on the edge. Its beautiful place and great for family stays. The host is easy to get in touch with and replies very quick. Way less tourist then ocean shores. Made our stay extra enjoyable.

  • This cottage is perfectly adorable. Decorated so cute. Beds were comfy linens were great. Everything you need is here. We opted to drive to the beach vs. walk because it was easier for us. Bring your own folding beach chairs to use as the cottage ones are not meant for the beach. Great place for kids and adults,

  • Well appointed kitchen, convenient location, nice private property with green belt on one side and an art gallery on the other (though I think the art gallery is moving). Front porch can be closed, which is a nice feature if you have dogs!

  • This place is super cute! It’s clean and fun, perfect for families with dogs and kids. The front porch is gated, but the yard itself isn’t fenced, however, it was still perfect for our pup and kids. We loved it and we will be back!!!

  • The perfect peaceful getaway. The ocean is a few steps away and even when it was storming we were still able to sit in bed and watch the waves. A wonderful home, we hope to stay again!

  • This darling beachside unit is immaculate and nicely furnished, and warm in the winter after the heaters run for a couple hours. It is the perfect couple retreat. We had 3 adults and it was a bit tight but we would definitely stay here again. You can walk straight out to one of the more beautiful and rugged beaches in Washington state, and you’re only a 10 minute drive from stylish Seabrook and 30-40 minutes from Ocean Shores.

  • A wonderfully cozy space for a weekend getaway. Nicely furnished and the location is unbeatable. Walk out the back door, past the fire pit, and you are on the dunes looking at the Pacific Ocean. Our family loved this spot, and we definitely hope to return.

Our 3 bedroom/2 bath home sits high on a bluff above the Pacific Ocean in the quirky, fabulous hamlet of Pacific Beach. Enjoy a morning latte with the sound of the surf or watch the sun sink into the sea from our 450 sq ft ocean-facing deck. Centrally-located on the Washington Coast: 5-min walk/70-sec drive down to the beach (park right on the sand); 19 miles to Olympic Nat'l Forest; 29 miles to Lake Quinault/Olympic Nat'l Park; Olympic Rainforests: Quinault 29 mi; Queets 50 mi; Hoh 99 mi.
**A Note About COVID-19 (Coronavirus): Understandably, we are receiving many questions about our cleaning and sanitation practices. We are following CDC guidelines specific for COVID-19. Specifically, after thoroughly cleaning the home following each guest, we disinfect the home with an EPA-registered hospital disinfectant with virucidal activity -- this includes all kitchen and bathroom fixtures, all light switches, all remotes, all door knobs, and other commonly-touched surfaces. This disinfectant is kid- and pet-safe once dry and, thankfully, has a pleasant eucalyptus scent. We clean our home ourselves; it is our only focus and our reviews evidence the pride we take in presenting our home for visitors. Our recommendation would be that you only travel with your immediate family unit at this time -- those with whom you normally live. Bring food to cook at the home or utilize take-out options. The region is rural and the beach secluded, so social distancing is quite easy. If meeting extended family for vacation, we would recommend that each household book a separate rental as an added precaution. With some ingenuity and care for others we will emerge from this, and we will be stronger for it. ---- Our 1,300 sq ft beach home offers a comfortable, convenient base camp from which to explore the Washington Coast and Olympic National Park while relaxing each evening to the roar of the Pacific. The open-concept main floor includes a master bedroom and full bath for those who would like to avoid stairs. This bedroom has a king-sized bed, expansive drawer space, and walk-in closet so that you can spread out in comfort during your stay. A 40" Smart TV provides access to over 200 satellite channels as well as popular streaming apps, such as Hulu and Netflix. Photos throughout the home highlight coastal destinations which can be reached during an afternoon excursion while returning here in the evening. A sliding glass door opens onto a small deck providing access to the dog- and kid-friendly back yard (fully enclosed in privacy fencing) and edible garden (planted Spring 2019). When in-season, help yourself to some of the nectarines (Hardi-Red), apples (Karmijn de Sonnaville), blueberries (Pink Lemonade and Chandler), raspberries (Caroline), seaberries (Titan), and cherries (Surefire Pie). As with all things, take what you need but make sure to leave some for future guests and for us. A stainless steel grill allows for summer back yard cookouts. The main floor bathroom has a full tub/shower combo with tile surround and glass shower door, providing a bright, modern setting while the privacy-screened window opens the room without compromising modesty. Plush white Macy's Hotel Collection bath towels, hand towels, and wash cloths, coupled with dual hand showers, help to create a spa-like setting. Off the hallway outside the bathroom is a washer and dryer stocked with laundry soap, fabric softener, bleach, and color-safe bleach. A pressure iron and ironing board are available for those with more formal destinations. The kitchen has place settings for 8 (as well as plastic dishes for the little ones), wine glasses, cocktail glasses, tea kettle, the usual assortment of pots/pans/cooking utensils, mixing bowls, graters, and cutting boards. Counter top appliances include a hand mixer, blender, rice cooker, coffee maker, Breville espresso maker, coffee grinder, toaster, and waffle maker. A dishwasher makes clean-up a snap. We stock the kitchen/pantry with staples, including 15+ spices, salt/pepper, flour, rice, sugar, coffee beans, vegetable and olive oil, vinegar, cornstarch, veggie bouillon, tabasco, corn starch, baking powder, baking soda, vanilla extract, soy sauce, rice vinegar, balsamic vinegar, red and white wine vinegar, saran wrap, tin foil, syrup, cooking spray, and butter. As you may have guessed, we list this in detail because grocery shopping is limited without a drive -- after all, peace and seclusion likely are components of why you are choosing Pacific Beach for your stay. The living and dining rooms look out onto the expansive lower deck through four large windows; even on the lower level there are ocean views that align with the setting sun. The dining room table seats 6 with seating for 2 at the breakfast bar. Partially hidden by the bar stools is a small cabinet which houses board games and assorted reading materials. A 60" Smart TV graces the corner of the living room. In addition to popular streaming apps such as Hulu and Netflix, a Sling box provides access to a dedicated HD satellite receiver at our primary home with access to over 200 channels, On-Demand programming (though not Pay-Per-View), and a DVR; the Sling signal can be redirected to the bedroom TV's when you are ready to retire for the evening. Below the TV, an electric fireplace illuminates a quartzite facade and travertine mantle, not only providing ambiance but also helping keep the winter chill at bay. The home is fully electric, with the grill being the only fossil fuel source; this takes full advantage of the bounty of the Olympic Peninsula, which allows us to source 98% of our electricity from renewable sources. The lower deck boasts a bistro set perfect for morning coffee surrounded by hanging baskets of phlox, bee balm, and hardy geraniums which attract butterflies and hummingbirds. Deck containers sport a series of fresh herbs, including thyme, mint, oregano, parsley, chives, and basil (whose growing season is shortened by our cool, damp nights). Just off the deck, lavender provides summer perfume while two dwarf apple trees (Liberty and William's Pride) complete the edible garden. Back inside, ascending the stairs you will encounter an armoire with spare blankets and pillows. To the right is the second bedroom, with a queen-sized memory foam mattress, ample drawer space, an armoire for hanging clothes, and a desk where you can squeeze in a last-minute work project or simply check your email while gazing out at the ocean. An android mini-PC is connected to the HDMI-2 input on the monitor which provides internet access (use the wireless keyboard in the desk drawer) while an HDMI cord attached to the HDMI-1 input allows you to connect your laptop to the monitor. A 32" TV and DVD player allow you to watch your favorite movie or keep the kids occupied. The room opens onto the upper deck, with sectional seating for 4 as well as two over-sized deck chairs. A deck box allows for storage of personal items, such as a good book, during your stay. Our home is located one block in on the bluff, with interrupted ocean views spanning approximately 160 degrees (see photos). The roar of the ocean tends to pick up in the evening and at night, while by day the shouts and laughter of happy beach-goers can be heard wafting over the bluff. The second full bath is located off this bedroom, again with tub/shower combo, dual hand showers, and glass shower door. Macy's Hotel Collection towels and plenty of drawer and cabinet space further accommodate your grooming regimen. Back across the hallway is the third bedroom with a queen-sized bed as well as a Euro Lounger which folds down into a full-sized bed. An armoire and nightstand provide storage space, and a sliding glass door opens onto a balcony with views of the surrounding neighborhood, forest, and rising sun. Both upstairs bedrooms have A-frame ceilings with exposed ridge beam. During the winter, ceiling fans tied to the heating system help gently displace warm air down from the peak to keep the upstairs rooms quite comfortable. The thermostats will be programmed to keep the home warmer during the morning and evening, cooler during the day and overnight. You may override the programming in any individual room by raising or lowering the desired temperature (the primary temperature shown in the display is the current temperature of the room; pressing the up or down arrows will highlight the goal temperature, which you can then change). Keep in mind that the thermostat will revert to the pre-set program after a few hours. In the summer, the upstairs ceiling fans are reversed and can be manually activated, but we find that opening the ocean-facing windows and the back balcony window creates quite the breeze and maintains a comfortable temperature. Bear in mind that the average high in Pacific Beach is 70 F in July and 71 F in August; conversely, it rarely freezes in winter with average highs in the mid-40's. As Roderic works in technology, I would be remiss if I failed to mention that the home has broadband internet with 100 Mb download speeds, WiFi coverage throughout, Ring security cameras outside covering the entire perimeter of the home (including decks and driveway), motion-activated safety lighting for letting the dog out late at night, exterior lighting set to run from sunset to sunrise (the top deck lighting turns off at 1 am so as not to interfere with sleep), a Ring video doorbell, and keypad entry. Each bedroom and the living room is equipped with emergency lighting which illuminates during a power outage and will run on battery power for up to 15 hours. Not only do these safety features keep the home secure when vacant, but they also serve to keep you and your family safe during your stay. Most cellular carriers struggle on the coast; therefore, you will want to activate WiFi calling on your cell upon arrival. If all else fails, you can reach us via the Ring video doorbell and we can walk you through connecting your phone to the WiFi. Finally, an EV charger is available for guest use. We allow up to three dogs at no additional charge -- all we ask is that you prevent them from curling up on the beds/sofa when wet or muddy and that you conduct a quick vacuum before leaving if they are shedding. If you are hoping to bring more than three dogs, please contact us beforehand and we will attempt to accommodate. Sunkissed is obviously a play on the color of the home, but it perfectly describes a Pacific Northwest summer -- including here on the coast. There is another shade named for the region: Grays Harbor. A deep, sulky blue-grey, it mirrors the color of the Pacific during our fierce late autumn storms. Whether your plans include strolling down the peaceful summer shoreline or watching violent waves from the safety of a bluff-top deck, we welcome you into our home to share in the beauty of the Washington Coast. Licensed through the Washington State Business Licensing Service: RR Bed and Breakfast, UBI: (See Photo of Business License)
Our home sits high atop a bluff overlooking the Pacific, though beach access is only 5 mins by foot or 70 secs by car. The closest beach access is via Analyde Gap Rd (head back out of the subdivision via Clerf St, left onto 1st St N, go 2 blocks then left on Homer St, 1 blk then right on Analyde Gap Rd -- a lot of words to describe a 0.3 mi walk). If you are carrying a lot with you, this beach is great since you can drive right out onto the sand. You can park anywhere to the right throughout the year; the area to the left is seasonally protected. The more well-known (and therefore more crowded) Pacific Beach State Park is 0.9 miles to the south. Between the two lies the town of Pacific Beach, with a spattering of mom-and-pop shops, a convenience store to stock up on basic supplies, bike rentals, kite shops, a hardware store, and fantastic ocean views -- topped with the endearing quirkiness that draws visitors here. Even the former Naval Station has been converted to a military resort and conference center. Pacific Beach hosts several seasonal events, including Chocolate on the Beach in February, Sand Castle contests, and the Kelpers Day Parade and Shakerat (logger) Rendevous in September. Absent a festival, it's usually a great day to fly a kite! Seasonal Clam Digs! Running from late September through April, razor clam season draws thousands of clammers to Washington’s beaches. It’s no wonder – according to the Washington Department of Fish and Wildlife (DFW), the Pacific razor clam is one of the most sought after shellfish in the state, often drawing more than 1,000 people per mile of beach on approved dig days. Long a staple of life for the Coast Salish tribes and early European settlers, this precious resource is now sustainably managed by the DFW. Dig days are organized by region (Kalaloch, Mocrocks, Copalis Beach, Twin Harbors, Long Beach) and divided between fall digs (when the approved low tide occurs at night) and spring digs (when the approved low tide occurs in the morning). Those willing to grab a lantern and brave the elements can take advantage of the less crowded fall dig days while those looking for a more social experience can opt for spring dates. Razor clams are found in the intertidal zone of the beach – the region inundated at high tide and exposed at low tide (from 3 feet above to 2 feet below sea level). A license allowing you to bag 15 clams per day can be obtained at You and I Market in Pacific Beach. You’ll also need a shovel, clam gun, and a separate container for each license, all of which can be obtained at Buck’s Bikes in neighboring Seabrook. Head to the beach 1-2 hours before low tide and commence digging! The beach region adjacent to Pacific Beach is called Mocrocks by the DFW (Moclips to Copalis Rock) and officially stretches from the southern boundary of the Quinault Reservation southward to the mouth of the Copalis River. The Copalis Beach region, which begins on the other side of the Copalis River, is just 10 miles away. Make sure to check the DFW website for a list of tentatively-scheduled dates, then check back a few days ahead of time to make sure the date received final approval following toxin testing. A Storied Past Pacific Beach has a storied history. Prior to establishment of the reservation in 1855, the Quinault Nation sustained itself hunting from ocean-going canoes along this coastline. By the early 1900's, urban tourists began flocking to the region via a newly finished rail terminus. The Pacific Beach Hotel, constructed in 1906, became a honeymooner's paradise. The area thrived on tourism and canning razor clams until World War II, when the Pacific Beach Hotel was purchased by the Navy as an anti-aircraft training center. Soon thereafter, the Air Force established a radar site to close several radar gaps along the Washington Coast which could have allowed hostile aircraft access to sites in the interior. This radar site was temporary, and in 1951 the military attempted to sell the site back to Pacific Beach; however, since the town is unincorporated, the sale could not be effected. In 1958, the Navy established a secret Sound Surveillance System designed to track Soviet submarine movements under the guise of oceanographic research. The town was intentionally removed from maps, and remaining tourism dried up. Technological changes made the station obsolete in the 1980's, and in 1987 the base was converted to a Naval Resort and Conference center. Since then, tourism has slowly trickled back to a region dubbed by the New York Times as "The Coast that Defies Big Dreams." [Thank you to Seabrook, The Museum of the North Beach, and NavyLifePNW for providing historical context). Solitude in Nature Nineteen miles to the northeast lies the southwesternmost boundary of the Olympic National Forest, established by the Grover Cleveland Administration in 1897. The core of the National Forest became Olympic National Park under the Franklin D. Roosevelt administration in 1938 and lies 29 miles northeast at Lake Quinault. Olympic National Park is a UNESCO World Heritage site secondary to its dramatic beauty and biodiversity. The Olympic peninsula is biologically isolated from the rest of the continent and survived glaciation during the last ice age; consequently, it harbors many species of plants and animals which exist nowhere else on Earth. The park spans a stunning array of ecosystems, from glaciated peaks to alpine meadows, to old-growth forest. Best known are the temperate rain forests of the ocean-facing river valleys which channel moisture off the coast and drench the forest floor. Olympic also spans 62 miles of wild coastline -- the longest stretch of undeveloped coastline in the lower 48. This coastline not only allows visitors to experience the stark beauty of native coastline unchanged by the hand of man, but also, in places, to contemplate our impact on the planet when stretches of wild coastline are littered with the detritus of a polluted ocean. Olympic National Park is vast -- nearly 1 million acres -- and mostly to be experienced on foot. Few roads penetrate the park and none cross it. To experience the park, visitors need to stay in various coastal towns encircling the park, and Pacific Beach is a great location for exploring the southwest flank of the park, the three largest rain forests (Quinault, Queets, and Hoh, with its Hall of Mosses), and the wilderness coastline. Restless Ground A 2015 article in The New Yorker introduced Americans to what geologists had discovered over the preceding twenty-five years: whereas settlers thought they had discovered the only peaceful region of the Ring of Fire, they had unwittingly built a civilization on its most violent section. A Cascadia Subduction Zone quake is overdue and, in a full-margin rupture, will launch the entire Northwest six feet lower and 100 further west in the span of minutes. The ensuing tsunami will be the most devastating natural disaster in American history. The good news is that this section of Pacific Beach is the gathering spot post-quake and is high enough in elevation to be above the inundation zone. If you are a geology buff, the nearby Copalis Ghost Forest is the geological Rosetta Stone which helped scientists discover the subduction zone in the late 1980's and can be reached by paddle board via the Copalis River. There really is something for everyone here.
