Your guide to Metung

All About Metung

Surrounded by water on three sides, Metung has grown from a 19th-century fishing village into a charming vacation town. A little bit off the main routes, Metung’s sandy beaches and quaint town invite you for a relaxing getaway. Most people come here for the many marinas and jetties from which to cast a fishing line or take off into the water. Cruises of all types take visitors for jaunts around Lake King and Bancroft Bay, while the gentle winds invite rookie sailors to learn the ropes, and kayakers paddle about from Bancroft Bay into the smaller inlets. Walking trails weave around the region for visitors looking to explore the natural beauty of the area and its recent and ancient history.

The best time to stay in a holiday rental in Metung

Metung features the kind of warm climate you hope for in a waterfront vacation town, with summer highs around 75 degrees Fahrenheit that cool down just a touch in the evenings. While it is generally cloudier than other parts of Australia, January to March is also the driest time of year there, though it still rains seven to nine days each month. In winter and spring, that number crawls up to the low teens. However, the winter also stays reasonably warm, averaging high temperatures just below 60 degrees Fahrenheit, with lows staying above 40 degrees, requiring warm layers and a waterproof coat.

Top things to do in Metung

Bancroft Bay

Metung’s many waterways create a boater’s dream, with the city nearly surrounded by water and lined with boat ramps, outfitters, and chartered boats, all ready to help you best enjoy your time on Bancroft Bay, whose breezes invite sailors and whose bluefish and black bream entice fishing fanatics.

The Bataluk Cultural Trail

A network of Indigenous trails that takes visitors through 30,000 years of Gunaikurnai history, the Bataluk Cultural Trail passes through Metung, drawing visitors to Legend Rock on the shore of Bancroft Bay. There, the local legend says, three fishermen were turned to stone as punishment for being greedy. Two of the three rocks were destroyed by road construction in the 1960s, so only one rock remains.

Metung Boardwalk

Some of Metung’s best views often come from simple strolls along the boardwalk that hugs the town’s eastern coastline. The walk leads you north on a leisurely stroll along the water with amazing views of Bancroft Bay.
