Places to stay in Mellon Udrigle
Traditional 19th century crofter's cottage in the village of Inverasdale overlooking Loch Ewe, refurbished to provide modern self-catering convenience whilst retaining its rustic character. Set within 6 acres of partially wooded croft land with access to the loch shore and panoramic views over the mountains of the Great Wilderness, Beinn Eighe & Sutherland. Huge sandy beaches are 5 minutes away by car and close to the famous North Coast 500 touring route. Children & pets welcome.
Coille Bheag is a six-acre working croft situated in Inverasdale, on the shores of Loch Ewe in the wild and beautiful landscape of Wester Ross, perfectly placed for exploring the hills and mountains of the Great Wilderness or the Torridons as well as our wild land and beautiful beaches. We are within the Wester Ross National Scenic Area and the Unesco Biosphere, 4 miles from the village of Poolewe and the NC500 tourist route. We enjoy beautiful views across the loch towards the mountains, including An Teallach; Beinn Eighe and the mountains at Ullapool and in Sutherland, and have direct access to the loch shore. The Cottage is a traditional 19th century stone-built Highland croft house, set up for self-catering and sleeping up to six people in two double bedrooms (one of which is on ground floor) plus one single bedroom with extra pull-out bed. (We can lend you a travel cot for babies if you let us know in advance, but bring your own baby bedding!) Children and pets are welcome, but we're sorry, the Cottage is not suitable for guests in wheelchairs. It commands beautiful panoramic views over Loch Ewe and the mountains and there is no street lighting for miles, so if you're a stargazer you'll see wonderful dark starry skies on a clear night. If you're lucky you might even catch a glimpse of the Northern Lights! The cottage has its own garden area, a sun lounge, and ample parking. The living room has a compact Aga stove which burns coal or wood, set in the original old stone fireplace. We can supply you with fuel, which is included in the price you pay along with electricity. The room has satellite TV/radio and DVD/CD player as well as two small sofas and a coffee table. A range of books, DVDs & CDs is also available for you to enjoy. The bathroom is on the ground floor. The Cottage is great for a family holiday or a romantic getaway - and if you come for Christmas, we'll even throw in a real Christmas tree from our own managed wood.
This is a friendly traditional crofting village in a very rural environment. There's plenty of scope for outdoor activities - walking, swimming, cycling, climbing, fishing, wildlife watching or messing about in kayaks - but not much in terms of nightlife! We're very close to some wonderful beaches, some within walking distance, and we're conveniently placed for hillwalkers. There aren't many opportunities for formal dining, but there are plenty of pubs and cafes offering good food, some of which are open throughout the winter. There's a pub, shop, weekly market (not winter) and indoor heated swimming pool available in the local village of Poolewe (10 mins by car), and many more shops, pubs and takeaways in the larger village of Gairloch (20 minutes by car). Boat trips and day cruises are also available in Gairloch or the ferry port of Ullapool (90 minutes) or you can go kayaking on our loch with local company Ewe Canoe. If you're into history, there are two local museums nearby to visit - Gairloch Heritage Museum, and the Russian Arctic Convoy Museum in Aultbea. Keen gardeners can visit Poolewe's world-famous Inverewe Garden (10 minutes), there is a pony trekking centre at nearby Red Point, and golfers can enjoy "possibly the best wee golf course in Scotland" at Gairloch Golf Club by the beach.
  • The croft is a cozy and well appointed spot in an amazing location, we stayed 3 nights and enjoyed the fireplace and visiting nearby beaches and lochs. The barracks (at the end of the road) is worth visiting for the views and Hamish the hound is gorgeous.

  • We had such a good time on our weekend to the cottage. Such a calm space with lovely welcoming people and thoughtful touches to help us enjoy our stay. We were only sad we had to leave!

  • Alasdair is a very welcoming host. The cottage is a lovely old place with lots of character. Really cosy with the log burner. Loved the garden, we could walk down to the lock and explore the rockpools. Further up the road there is a beach you can visit. We had a little swim there too. And the views from the upstairs windows are amazing!!!

  • Amazing cottage to explore one of the best bits of the world. Everything you need and more thoughtful touches!

  • A perfectly formed original cottage in a trad, and slightly quirky, comfortable and cosy style. It's in the most amazing location for both quiet and active moods and enjoys ever changing light, colour and weather which affect the stunning views and landscape all around it. Alasdair and Clare were easygoing and helpful hosts. And their hens lay quality fresh eggs should you run out. Altogether a happy and memorable stay in a fantastic part of West Coast Scotland.

  • Lovely, quirky cottage with lots of character and incredible views. Helpful hosts and stunning beaches nearby which meant we enjoyed some fabulous winter walks! Struggled to find somewhere nearby for a "pub lunch" but imagine this wouldn't be such a problem in season. Great find!

  • Quiet, comfy and well equipped, a great place to stay with stunning views.

    Martin2020-01-09T00:00:00Z

  • Great place to stay. Amazing location. Great local tips.

    Jack2019-11-28T00:00:00Z
  • Had a great stay at Ian’s place. He gave us detailed instructions since sat nav and mobile coverage up there is spotty so found the place with ease. He gave us spot on recommendations for the pub down the road and we had an amazing meal there. And the views from the sitting room, out onto the water were amazing. Would stay here again :)

    Chris2019-10-24T00:00:00Z
  • A comfortable bothan at a secluded location, equipped with everything you need. The rules may be a bit more emphasized than usually, and Ian will take a good look at you – no doubt some guests in the past misbehaved a bit –, but he is a genial, thoughtful and attentive host. I definitely recommend the bothan, we had a good time there, and it is quite a special place. Everything is clean and in good condition.

  • Tidy flat with all ammenities you'd expect. Fabulous location. Remote if you are looking for that - we were. Stay again.

    Stephen2019-09-17T00:00:00Z
  • Lovely cosy cottage in a beautiful location. Ian made us feel very welcome and we were delighted to find that the house not only had absolutely superb views but was full of lovely little touches that made it feel comfortable, homely and so much more than a holiday cottage. Would definitely like to return.

We have local world famous gardens at Inverewe Gardens, 2 wonderful local museums, sandy beaches, the closest of which is only about 3 kilometres away. A simple walk along Melvaig beach will take you to sandy Peterburn beach. You might even think you are in the Caribbean with the beautiful blue seas. Wildlife? There is a small herd of local deer, the otter who uses the drive and stream to navigate, white tailed sea eagles which navigate up and down our coast and buzzards, raven and pine martin.

  • Perfectly equipped cottage with superb views. Very nice home from Mandy.

  • You will not find a more magical place than the Otterburn cottages. Sitting just above a cliff overlooking a beautiful stone beach and the Isle of Skye, you will find yourself enamored by the surroundings with grazing sheep, hens and ducks (with fresh eggs for breakfast). The cottage itself has a great sun porch where you can take in the full coastline and relax in couches just outside the living room. The kitchen was well-equipped and the books of local hikes and TV (to pick up the latest in Brexit dealings) were very informative. The bedrooms upstairs were just perfect with windows overlooking the coastline and photos of local fauna and very comfortable beds. The colors of decor were very peaceful. The whole experience was memorable. A visit to the lighthouse and to swim is an added bonus. The one lane road is also a great place to run. Mandy and her husband went beyond the call of duty when we had car problems. Mandy is a special host. We could not recommend a stay more highly.

  • Mandy's place is amazing and just as described. Very well organized and welcoming. Getting there is a bit of an adventure in itself, but well worth it. We all loved it and hope to come back soon.

  • Magic place to stay, in a beautiful setting!

    James2020-03-14T00:00:00Z
  • Ian's place is by the remote village of Achiltibuie but thanks to spot on directions is easy to find day or night. I had a small room with everything I needed, close to the bathroom and shower, which as a walker is appreciated! The area is great for walking and exploring so if that is your thing I think you will like it here. I walked around Stac Pollaidh one of the days which is very easy to get to by car. Other destinations are close by such as the beautiful beach at Achmelvich. One or two things deserve a special mention. I booked at short notice and Ian and Marie Claire's hospitality was second to none. I was provided with an excellent breakfast each day, included in the price of booking, and I was able to join them to see in the New Year, which was appreciated. Another thing I would like to note is that, leaving in a bit of a rush, I forgot to bring my maps - Ian graciously provided his for me to use for the duration of my stay. Ian was more than happy to tell me a bit about the local area which I loved hearing about because I think it's important to know a little bit at least about where you're staying. The pub a couple of miles down the road was able to accommodate me for a really lovely meal at very short notice on New Years' Eve - which was also very much appreciated. A wonderful part of the world to visit and very nice hosts. Thank you Ian.

    Ian2020-01-02T00:00:00Z
  • I chose this place on relatively short-term for some nights for different reasons, one of them being the western islands' Puffins. Seek for calm and trust and goodwill? Searching for a BnB, done the old way? Need a break from drive-thru tourism? Look no further, here you will find it! Won't find any Puffins though, I grant you that. Ian has not only his striking hospitality to offer, but a load of Scottish lore and bold conversation, too. In at least five different languages. You'll also get a distinct No on "the keys please!", "water-drop the whiskey?" and "any Puffins on Handa?". Good and steady base for trips to the Ullapool-, west- and northcoast areas. Beautiful view on the "Summer"-Isles and beyond. Worthwhile for getting a taste of Scottish Highland remoteness. Apt to intensify a lasting longing for Puffins.

  • Had a very enjoyable four-day stay with Ian. There's a lot to see in the area but perhaps the best thing is the total change in pace and approach to life. Ian was a great host - very informal, interesting and entertaining, knowledgeable about all sorts of topics and excellent on local advice. You'll remember your stay here.

    John2019-08-08T00:00:00Z
  • It's a great place to stay. The landscape, the house and Ian are unique!

  • Amazing area, so beautiful ! ... and great house with a very friendly and interesting host. I will come back the day I travel back to Scotland !

  • Great place, friendly, relaxed atmosphere. As stated in the listing, this is not a typical B&B - rather a room in a private house. Informal, relaxed, friendly. Ian is a bit of a raconteur, full of interesting stories and perspectives on life now and in eariler times in Achiltibuie and more generally Scotland. Definitely worth a return visit.

Kildonan is situated beside with sea with spectacular views across to surrounding mountain ranges. It is a very peaceful and relaxing destination, a place to recharge the batteries. Stunning beaches all around, safe and clean. A wide variety of wildlife sea and on land. Facilities nearby include, restaurants, cafes and tea shops, golf course, swimming pool and leisure facilities, museum. It is a fabulous location in the Highlands of Scotland.
  • This is a fabulous house and very well equipped. I’ve stayed in several Air BnB properties and this is by far the best. Spotlessly clean, well equipped, really good beds and a real home from home. Highly highly recommend.

    Neal2019-10-05T00:00:00Z
  • This is a great place if you want somewhere quiet and comfortable, with interesting easy walks from the front door. There is an excellent kitchen, very comfy sitting room, good shower and bathroom and the beds were good too. It was all spotlessly clean. We had lovely walks along the road to the beaches at Mellon Udrigle and Gruinard Bay and the footpath to Slaggan Bay is full of interest, passing small lochs, highland cattle, ruined cottages and ending up at a lovely sandy beach. Beautiful Inverewe Gardens are nearby. Recommend the cafe at Aultbea, Oran-na-mara, which does not look very impressive when you drive up but had lovely food and an excellent view of Aultbea. It's an interesting area historically and has many relics from WW2 as Loch Ewe was a naval base then. The Gairloch Museum is very fancy and new with lots of interesting displays and well worth a visit if you are interested in the history of the area. The very well stocked post office and store is just a few minutes walk down the road and the prices are Co-op prices. It also sells petrol.

  • Mandy’s house is in a remote but stunning location which feels like the end of the world. There is nothing nearby so you need to stock up before you arrive at the house. However for us this was a real plus to experience something so unique. Mandy’s communication and directions were very consistent and clear. If you follow her instructions you won’t get lost. House is very clean and views are spectacular. Enjoy. Thank you Mandy.

Poolewe has its own hotel and a delightful cafe run by a welcoming Galician couple who serve heartwarming rustic cuisine. Poolewe has a village hall which hosts Ceilidhs, craft fairs and other local events. In the town of Gairloch, from the harbour, you can take a ride in a glass bottomed boat, go in search of whales and dolphins and experience the local wildlife through a highly knowledgeable local marine biologist and his boat. Gairloch village has a Fish and Chip shop, a Chinese takeaway, a butcher’s, a fabulous bookshop with a cafe, a couple of hotels and restaurants for excellent meals including The Old Inn. A little further a field but well worth making the effort for are the beautiful vast sandy beaches of Redpoint and the exquisite food at the Badachro Inn with incredible views across the water.
  • We stayed at Richard's place for 3 weeks. Unfortunately our stay was at the beginning of Covoid 19 escalation in which we were on lock down. With that said my review will differ from others but I will give my review where I can. Arriving to the house Kate was intouch with any help, information and questions we had. She was so kind and we immediately felt welcomed. Rick also reached out making sure everything was as expected and that we were happy with our stay. The house was spotlessly clean and decorated with very nice furniture and finishing touches. It made the house feel like a home away from home. We have 3 children and even though we were on lock down having to be inside for long periods we all enjoyed the house completely. The beds were comfortable and the couches large and fluffy. They had everything nessessary for cooking, a bundle of wood provided for a fire, a really good WiFi connection, boardgames, a Play Station, a Wii with plenty of games to choose from , and a fully fenced yard with a peaceful setting and beautiful views . A few nights we opened the windows to listen to the stream flow outside. We had the opportunity to see the local area while driving to get groceries and we found so many trail heads and beautiful beaches along the coast. Mountains and cliffs, turquoise blue waters and pink Sandy beaches make the area unlike any other we've seen. The town of Laide has a little shop within walking distance of the house that would surprise you how much they have on stock. The owner Debbie was also very kind and welcoming. I feel for the current situation within the world the locals kindness shows alot about the character within the community. Overall I would definitely recommend this house to anyone. We enjoyed our 3 weeks stay and we were on lock down. The house and community is definitely the kind of place you want to go, to relax and enjoy what the area has to offer outdoors. To have the opportunity to visit and not have a lockdown in place would be a dream. If this house happens to be available during the dates you need I definitely recommend you book while you can, you won't regret it.

  • A beautiful property surrounded by stunning beaches and walks with amazing log burner to return to....bliss.

  • We very much enjoyed staying at Seaview (Richard’s place). It is located just above Laide with great views of the sea and especially the northern sky just in case the elusive aurora appear. It is modern, spacious, well-equipped and spotlessly clean. The beds are notably comfortable, as are the sofas in the sitting room. We felt warm and secure even though it was February and a freezing storm was blowing outside. Laide has a good local shop and a petrol station. Richard was a very responsive host, answering every question and even supplying Google pluscode and what3words code to pinpoint the house location. Kate and Neil, the local hosts, were very helpful and friendly. Highly recommended.

  • Seaview is a lovely cosy and comfortable cottage. It is spacious with a perfect layout. We were very comfortable (the sofa is so comfy), it was warm and had everything we needed. Laide Village is quiet and the shop is small but very good. There are lovely beaches and a nice walk in the woods close by. Richard had left us some toys for our 1 year old which was thoughtful. If you are into mountain biking then this place is great as Richard has tracks marked on OS maps. We went with our surf ski and had fun in the sea, even in February! Note that the front door is stiff so give it a good push to get in.

Cosy Shepherds Hut on a working croft in the small village of Melvaig near Gairloch, Wester Ross with views out over the sea to Skye and the Outer Hebrides. Traditional lay out with the added luxury of a kitchenette and shower/toilet en suite
  • Cozy hut with lovely view

    Joshua2020-03-24T00:00:00Z
  • Christine was a great host - she was always prompt with her responses and helpful. The shepherds hut was an absolute delight (so clean and comfy), and couldn't find a better location. On our first night we did a 10km walk to the lighthouse in the dark - we have never seen dark skies like that, the Milky Way was gigantic and we saw shooting stars. We checked afterwards and Melvaig is actually just just inside the darkest area/colour you can get on a world's dark skies map! (as dark as in the middle of the Atlantic). Would love to return.

    Vlad2020-03-22T00:00:00Z
  • Amazing views and the hut has everything you need - feel so lucky to have stayed here!

Shiskine is a self catering holiday apartment in the small crofting community of Aultgrishan, 8 miles north of Gairloch, right on the coast, with stunning views over The Minch to the Isle of Skye, The Shiant Isles, and the Isles of Harris and Lewis in the Outer Hebrides. It is entirely self-contained, occupying the first floor of the owner’s house, and is accessed via its own separate entrance. It's a great place for couples, solo adventurers, families, photographers and walkers.
The accommodation is furnished to a high standard with quality handmade rustic furniture and luxury soft Egyptian cotton bedding. The views from the apartment are amazing. A place guaranteed to let you unwind and relax. More information and photos can be found on our website.
Shiskine is in a remote and beautiful part of Scotland. It is surrounded by mountains and ocean, and big dark skies at night. It is quiet, peaceful, and steeped in nature, with just a few small houses strung out along the coast.
  • We stayed at this beautiful and cozy Airbnb for a few days and we enjoyed our time during long walks at the beach and wonderful landscape which surrounded us! If you would like to relax in pure nature or at a beautiful beach this Airbnb is perfect ! It is also great for adventured walks through the highlands! We had a great time !

  • What a great place- Mark and Maria are lovely- so helpful friendly, interesting and kind; the apartment is really cosy and clean and has everything you need- for the hours the weather drives you indoors, it was a real treat to hang out there: AND the location is amazing- beautiful beach right in front and so quiet as well as close to some of the most beautiful spots in Wester Ross. Can’t recommend it enough. Hope we get a chance to come back. May try out the newly built pod next time :)

    Alfonso, Fran, Polly, Noah2019-05-27T00:00:00Z
  • We were allowed to spend two weeks with Mark and Maria our vacation. The apartment is equipped with many lovely details and beautiful pictures. We felt extremely well. Like at home. In addition to the warm personal welcome were already water, milk (for tea) and very delicious cookies in the apartment ready. The beautiful wooden furniture and the very comfortable beds we really liked. But the best part was the fantastic view directly from the windows of the apartment overlooking the sea and the islands of Skye and Harris. Every evening from the apartment we could see the sun sink into the sea (or the clouds above). We have within a radius of max. 25 miles of wonderful walks in this magnificent nature (hiking tips and plans are in the apartment). If we were to come back to the Highlands, we would like to stay at Maria and Mark's again. The holiday I would titled with the title "peace and pure nature".

  • We thoroughly enjoyed our stay here. It was quite something to stay somewhere so remote! The place itself was great. Very spacious and luxurious and provided you with everything you might need. The views from every window are incredible. We watched sea eagles flying around and despite not having the best weather could see Skye and the Outer Hebrides. And the stars were incredible!!

  • Great house and location. We were three friends staying and we enjoyed this place a lot! Mandy is a perfect example of a remote but thoughtful host. She has sent us all the instructions beforhand, so we didn't have to worry about check-in. She has also provided information about the area, that was a really nice touch. The house is very cozy, well equipped and the neighbour Julia is very helpful. Thank you!

  • It’s been fantastic to stay at this house in the almost point of nowhere. The couple living there has been very charming and very helpful when it came to give us recommendations what to visit. Because of them we had the best roadtrip that we could imagine! Thank you again for having us!

  • We had a wonderful stay at Michaels place! We just stayed there for one night during our Scotland trip, but would have definitely stayed longer. Michael and his wife were very obliging! We got self baked and very tasty ginger bread! The rooms were perfectly clean and cozy. We had enough space for our suitcases and breakfast was more than we had expected! Before we left the next morning, Michael gave us helpful information about our driving route and recommended some nice spots on the way! Thank you! We would definitely come back!

You can tell that they really enjoy being hosts and will try to make your stay comfortable. Both the bedroom and bathroom are quite roomy!

My croft house is located on the Scoraig Peninsula with beautiful views of the surrounding hills, Little Loch Broom and the Summer isles. Relax and experience off grid living within the comfort of my home and the remote community of Scoraig. http://www.scoraig.com/?page_id=36
The cosy Croft house is heated by a pellet boiler/stove. Pellets and wood are charged in addition to rent. A wood fired cooker and gas stove are available for cooking. The surrounding wild gardens provide a tranquil haven for birds and wildlife with many beautiful plantings made over the years by Ewan's mother Åsa and her partner Bengt. Scoraig is ideal for the those seeking a unique experience away from the stresses and strains of modern life within the comfort of a beautifully restored home. Local walks on Scoraig give stunning views and fishing or day trips to Badlurach Jetty can be arranged. Ewan, Åsa and his partner Fadzai look forward to welcoming you to their unique home.
The Scoraig community is unique in that it has no vehicle access and relies entirely on power produced by wind turbines and solar panels. Guests may park at Badlurach Jetty and a short boat crossing takes you to the Scoraig Jetty. Shopping in Inverness or Ullapool, prior to arrival, is essential as there are no shops on Scoraig. Local produce may be available.
