Our house is situated on our family farm 35km outside of Swellendam between the foothills of the Langeberg Mountain and the Indian ocean. Depending on the time of the year there are many farm activities to see and experience. Our house is light and airy but very much home. We have an indoor garden which is any plant enthusiasts dream. Our guest bedroom has a lovely dubbel bed with only Egyptian cotton linen and an en suite bathroom with a shower and white towels.
We live on our family farm. Simonne is an 8th generation farmer and still farms with her father. Pieter is an Agronomist and will also one day form a bigger part of the farming team. We live in the heart of what we would call in afrikaans the “ruêns” (refering to our flowing hill country). In our eyes the most beautiful part of the world. Ever changing with the season and farm activities. For most part of the year we live on a big patchwork consisting of all the fields and the different crops growing on them. Our home has a big garden as well as an indoor garden, Simonne loves anything that she can put in the soil and see it grow. It’s very light and airy with big windows and lots of natural light. The perfect recipe to wash away any stress in this tranquil setting. A perfect getaway from everyday life. We offer additional services on request: Breakfast consisting of seasonal fruitsalad, cereals, muesli and yoghurt, freshly baked farm bread, fruit juice, tea and coffee @ R100pp Scones and tea served in the indoor garden @ R80pp Laundry service R70/5kg (wash, dry and iron)
  • A beautiful and stylish room in a quiet and lovely rural location. Pieter and Simonne are lovely people and very welcoming. I recommend a stay unhesitatingly, and hope to be back one day.

  • This Place is absolutely unique.. in the Middle of nowhere you will find a beautiful house and really nice Appartement. Go there for this special experience.

    Inga2020-03-04T00:00:00Z
  • It was an extraordinary great stay!! First you have to drive 30 min on an empty „road“ before heading to the entrance. But it’s worth it! Simone and her husband are super nice and the best hosts. It was definitely better than we expected. They are funny, we could use their kitchen and the house is amazing! :)

    Melanie2020-01-30T00:00:00Z
  • I was a bit apprehensive when I saw the low price. Due to my extensive travels both as a journalist and avid hiker / mountain climber, I know that pictures often lie. So I just couldn’t reconcile the price with pictures I saw. But the place blew me away. Perfect! Clean lines, private space, quiet with amazing views of the valley (I arrived just as the sun was setting so it was spectacular). The host was really hospitable. Ps: Make sure your phone is fully charged for directions as the place is off the main road and out of town.

    Omphitlhetse2020-01-28T00:00:00Z
  • Beautiful place. Highly recommended to stay one night. In addition to the beauty of the place and the house, the hosts are very nice and Simonne gave us many recommendations of the area!

    Viviana2019-11-27T00:00:00Z
  • Staying with Simonne and Pieter at the farm was one of the best homestay experiences during our vacation. Their hospitality is outstanding and the farm is a remote island and getaway from the normal garden route towns. Exceptional interior design, great views of the country side and well equipped for self catering. Especially the coffee machine next to the bed made for a good morning!

    Nico2019-11-05T00:00:00Z
  • Great hospitality. Very comfortable room.

    Helen2019-10-05T00:00:00Z
  • Not to be missed!! One of the most spectacular homes I’ve ever seen, matched by a warm, hospitable and generous host. Wish we could have stayed longer, but we will definitely be back!!

A house on the estuary of a VERY BIG river ie - Lower Breede river - about 15km from the sea, the house is set back about about 20m from the river . It is completely off the grid , ie only solar power and rainwater. It might not suit city dwellers who need every gadget and convenience but its heaven for the hardier ones. Please bring bedding and towels . The are pillows and various duvet inners but we don't have a washing machine so we cannot supply linen
This is a big 25Ha ( 50 acre) property , the nearest neighbouring houses are about 200m away. Its super peaceful and quiet. Our house has a gas stove and fridge plus freezer , a few solar lights , a gas water heater and our water supply is rainwater collected in tanks . You need to be very sparing with water ( like we all should be in the Cities - but here its especially important. This place will not suit people who like the bright city lights but its very special for those who like to walk , swim and be in amongst nature . The river is also a fishing paradise ie Kob , etc . This part of the river is an estuary , its about 12km to the mouth and the whole area is a protected nature conservancy. This is a great river for swimming, mountain biking, bird watching , boating, fishing etc, but you need to be aware that it is tidal and parents need to keep a close watch on children in the water. The vegetation in the area is renosterbos which is a specific type of fynbos. There are good walks along the river and on the property . Cape Infanta ( 14km) is nearby with a great swimming spot at the slipway . The is where the Breede meets the ocean and is also a favourite place for Whales to visit - in fact the Whales here outnumber those at Hermanus There is a basic shop and coffee shop both near here and also at Malgas
This is a farming area . It is very quiet and quite isolated . There is a 55 km gravel road in pretty good condition once you turn off the National Road ( N2) but expect corrugations etc . Once you arrive at our turnoff - its about 1km through a farm , then about 1 more Km on our property and you will arrive at the waters edge ! Be prepared for possible punctures etc . We suggest you don't drive over 80km per hour - slower is better. Living out in the farming areas is very different to the cities with all amenities. There is a pretty well equipped shop which sells all the basics including gas, liquor store and petrol is available at Malgas - this is all about 15km from Rooikop. Malgas also boasts an historic hand operated pont which is the only way to cross the Breede , if you want to drive on the other side - ie to Witsand etc , other than driving all the way to the N2 and back along the other side of the river
  • We love staying at Rooikoppie as it feels so absolutely private, tranquil and uncomplicated. I read, he fishes, the dogs watch the river go by from the stoep, we all sleep a lot. Perfect break.

    Karen2020-03-16T00:00:00Z
  • Loved the quiet and access to nature. Dog friendly. The stoep is amazing. Everything you need is in the house. Rooms have amazing views of the river and the swim in the river was the highlight. Can’t wait to go back.

    Andrea2020-03-01T00:00:00Z
  • We had a great stay! Very tranquil

    Patrick2020-02-05T00:00:00Z
  • We had a fantastic couple of days at roikoop! The location is truly unique. The river is very nice and we swam a lot from the jetty or the bank depending on the tide. We used the row boat to row around the river which was nice. The house almost feel like a boat as you so close to the water. We slept with the doors opened hearing the water and river life. Also love the no electricity just candles at night. Though there is a USB port to charge your phone! The braai area is sheltered and very cosy. The house is basic and old as per pics. It have everything you need but missing extra touches but you can bring them yourself like lanterns to use outdoor, a hammock, some blankets to make it cosy! Thanks for the stay. We will be back!

    Lina2020-01-10T00:00:00Z
  • If you love nature, you wil love rooikop. this place is magical!

    Stephan2019-12-05T00:00:00Z
  • Beautiful view. If you want to experience true silence then this is the place for you. Very basic amenities but everything you need. Caught dinner right in front of the house.

    Paul2019-09-24T00:00:00Z
  • Rooikop is a gem in the most magnificent setting. We have been back a few times and just love the simplicity of the cottage and the stillness of the area.

    Lorryn2019-08-11T00:00:00Z
  • Wow....a wonderful place on the river where special memories are made. The house is exactly as described and was perfect for our needs. Beautiful nights braaing under the stars. There are a couple of electric lights but otherwise it's candles and it was just perfect.

Come and experience the sweet life in the countryside! Our historic barn, nestled at the foot of the majestic Langeberg mountains, dates back to the late 1800s, when this landmark property was a berry farm. Ideal for nature lovers, foodies, young families and those seeking a quiet place to pause and reset. Stay for a single night, but to really experience the charm of country life and see all the hidden gems this area has to offer, a longer stay is recommended by most of our guests!
One bedroom with queen size bed, and French doors opening onto the patio with stunning views of the Langeberg mountains. Open plan kitchen/living room area has a trundle bed with 2 single bed mattresses for sleeping arrangements for 2 extra people. The kitchen is fully equipped and has a gas stove and oven, microwave and fridge/freezer. Large en-suite bathroom with a walk-in rain shower and slipper bath. Please note: bathroom access is through the bedroom. The original beams and ceilings have been retained, and much of the character of the old building is reflected in the decor. Also suitable for families traveling with young children.
Leafy neighborhood where people walk their dogs and children ride their bikes in the street. In a sought-after part of town, close to historical buildings such as the Drostdy museum complex, as well as shops and restaurants. Situated close to tourist attractions in town, but far enough away from it for tranquility. Easy access to hiking and mountain biking routes. Bontebok National Park is only 5km away, offering game drives, mountain bike trails, picnicking and river activities. The lei water sloot (irrigation channel) runs right past our property, and the huge oak tree shades the barn in summer and takes one back to a bygone era...small-town living at its best. An outdoor-lover’s paradise!
  • Beautifully decorated, super clean apartment! We were only there one night, but we would have loved to stay longer. Absolute recommendation! Communication with Denise is excellent.

  • The barn is a beautiful place. We loved the cottage and especially the incredible view from the garden towards the mountains. The area is spacious and has everything you need for a relaxed stay in Swellendam. Denise is really easy to communicate with and has a great attention to detail. One night here wasn’t enough!

    Marjella2020-03-13T00:00:00Z
  • What a delightful, perfect place! The historic Barn was transformed and is now tastefully decorated and homely. We felt special as guests to stay here. Attention to detail all around! Even provisions were made for possible powerouts during loadshedding. We loved the opportunity to braai and end the day over a glass of wine on the verandah looking out at the mountains. Thank you for an unforgettable memory. Johann and Douglas 🏳️‍🌈

To us, our farm is a little bit of paradise! Set in a valley with majestic mountains as our backdrop and the mighty Breede river on our doorstep. The Breede is a fisherman's dream. Fish from our jetty or on the river. The river is heaven to any water enthusiast- skiing, tubing, sailing. We have two cottages which may be hired separately or together. Families will enjoy interacting and feeding our many animals-ducks, swans, chickens, alpacas, monkeys, meerkats, peacocks, sheep and cows.
Each cottage has 2 bedrooms; main bedroom has a double bed and the second one has a single bed and double bunks. Sleeps five in total. The kitchen/lounge is open plan. The lounge has a T V and 2 comfortable couches. The kitchen is fully equipped with fridge, stove microwave kettle etc.. The bathroom has a shower, loo and hand basin. There is also an outdoor semi enclosed braai area. Each cottage has a fence around it
  • A true farm experience! We really enjoyed walking around and seeing the animals and the ferry ride across the river. Close to a local bar. Beautiful countryside and a quick drive to the beach.

    Roland2020-03-01T00:00:00Z
  • The cottage is very spacious and nice. We were welcomed friendly and spent a quiet night under an impressive sky. As the cottage is located close to the entrance of De Hoop, it is a good base to discover that stunningly beautiful nature reserve.

    Moritz2020-02-26T00:00:00Z
  • Very quaint facility, super helpful hosts! Grilling an experience by the open fireplace in the kitchen! Short journey to de Hoop NP. A very nice stay that we would have loved to enjoy longer than one night.

  • Nice, secluded place to stay. The De Hoop Nature Reserve is really just a stone's throw away. We used the outdoor area a lot (fire pit / BBQ). Else-Marie is really a very nice host who also gave us some great tips.

    Ole-Nils2020-02-15T00:00:00Z
  • Great place to stay! Everything that you will need is there, you should only groceries in advance! Also it is a very good starting point to visit De Hoop National Park. Don't forget you bathing suites when you go there and the weather is nice!

    Robin2020-02-01T00:00:00Z
  • The Cottage was super exciting. We definitely recommand that place just keep in mind that only gravel roads lead to it. Also make sure that you follow the instructions of Else-marie and don' t use Google Maps. If you want to visit De Hoop it will be a perfect place to stay.

  • Beautiful place! Lot of wind when we were there but we really enjoyed the cottage and the nature reserve (20 minutes drive to get to the entrance and another 20 to get to the beach front). When it comes to amenities, both the inside and the outside fireplaces were really cool. I recommend the place

Beautiful family house on the Breede River, with a private jetty for boat mooring and fishing. Secure estate, boom access. Large, sunny patio, great for a braai/BBQ, sheltered from the wind. Large lawn down to the river. Additional activities offered include foosball, table tennis, boules, finger hockey & kids DVD's.
Beautiful level lawn leading down to river frontage. Patio with built-in braai/BBQ. Large outdoor entertainment area. Perfect for large families.
Restaurants/Bars in the area reachable by road or by boat: The Boathouse (serves pizza) and The Bushpub. The Trading Post is a small convenience store located in nearby Malgas. The Malagas Hotel in Malgas is also worth a visit. Sijnn wine farm is home to top Cape wines, 10 mins drive. Witsands and Infanta are seaside towns 20 mins away. Restaurant / Bar called Benthead, on the way to Infanta, also has a small shop. De Hoop nature reserve is 45 mins away.
  • Riverine Unit A11 is one of the best riverside houses we have ever rented. The thoughtful touches, like fluffy blankets by the fireplace; the box of videos in the TV area; the table tennis table; the well-stocked storeroom; and games for all ages were not lost on us. We also appreciated the daily visits of Martha, the cheerful and efficient cleaning lady. It’s a very attractive thatched house set in a wide lawn that leads down to a well-maintained jetty – one of the few that is not overgrown with reeds. We will certainly be back and can recommend it highly to anyone who wants a peaceful stay on the lovely Breede River.

  • Beautiful house, BEST location! This house offers everything and more. I was amazed to see hoe hey thought of smaller details. As you are quite far from the nearest town(Swellendam) they really do cater for all your needs. This house is perfect for summers but also very cosy for a winter getaway with a fireplace and warm atmosphere. We really enjoyed our stay!

    Anneli2020-02-09T00:00:00Z
  • Justin’s place at Riverine on the Breede is in an ideal location for an amazing family holiday. The veranda area and large grass bank make for a wonderful outdoor experience.

    Evan2019-12-23T00:00:00Z
  • What a special place! It far surpassed our expectations, had everything we wanted and more, and the token phrase of the weekend was, "The house provides!" Beautiful space, beautiful location, such a treat to have Martha clean each day, and we'll be planning many more weekend getaways. Thank you!

    Sarah2019-12-01T00:00:00Z
  • Stunning family weekend away! Will def be back next year :)

    Suzan2019-11-24T00:00:00Z
  • If you’re going away with your wife and kids. Or the whole family ranging from grand parents to aunts and uncles, or just close friends then this is the perfect house for you. There’s plenty fridge and freezer space for long stays, the kitchen had everything you need. And even had spares in the little pantry if needed. Outside is where this house shines. There’s a fuse-ball table and a long wooden table for the entire family to eat around (my favorite) theres a cozy corner to read or watch the river flow by and even laze in the Hammock under the tree while the kids play on the swing. Outside is also mostly covered, so if there is a little rain you can still entertain out there. But if things get really nasty, inside is certainly not a let down. Light the fire, sit round the table and chat while cooking on the gas stove. Or sit on the sofa and watch the flames, or plonk the kids in the separate lounge to watch tv while the adults enjoy a cocktail or two. All the bedrooms were spotless. And all the mattresses were very comfortable. Two nights will leave you wanting 7. Which worries me. Because what would 7 nights lead too? Hahaha Much appreciated Jonathan Neethling ✌🏻

Over the hills and far away... Our architect-designed house mixes inside/outside space creating room aplenty for family, children and guests. Explore wetland, river and the Langeberg mountains. With the best of creature comforts this spot is paradise for children and a stylish retreat for adults.
The unique combination of stylish architect designed off-the-grid house with the wildness of the setting, mountain, wetland river and pool.
The calm, the peacefulness. We love the neighborliness, the character of Suurbraak, the brass-band at Christmas time, the young men riding bareback through the village. The family life on the stoeps of the houses along the main road. The convivial Paradise Organic cafe with its excellent food. Communal swimming at the big swimming holes close to the village. The ability to retreat, yet be close to all the goings on of tourist Overberg.
  • the thing that surprised me the most was that it really felt like home with all the extra's .. spices, extra cutlery, AMAZING coffee and tea cups - serrated large knife which I wanted to sneak in my bag many times :-) I didn't :-) the bino's, recipe books, … gosh just so many extra's that made it feel like home. LOVED so many things I could go on forever! The road to the house was a bit bumpy and muddy but we made it with our little car. Take water with as the natural water is quite natural (albeit safe to drink). We just loved curling up on the couches reading and watching the birds. oh and your pizza oven is AMAZING! we spent many hours back playing board games and just relaxing. thank you for allowing us to share your home for a little while. We had an amazing time!

  • Bridget's and Maggie's house is a wonderful place to stay. First it is a bit challenging to keep the faith in your car trying to reach the end of the road but once there, it is definitely worth the ride. You'll find a beautifully designed house food equipped with so many nice details. It's pure pleasure just to sit and watch the birds playing in front of the house or listen to the frog at the nature pool. There are some hiking trails available near by but unfortunately we hadn't the time. Instead we visited the village and had a late breakfast at the paradise organic cafe which is worth a visit and in walking distance. We would recommend this place to anybody traveling the garden route.

    Andreas2020-03-20T00:00:00Z
  • What a special and lovely spot. We loved the pizza oven, natural pool and reading nook. Sitting in the front room with the doors open and watching the mountain was just what we needed. Everything was extremely well stocked, neat and sparkling clean. Perfect! We will be back :)

  • We had a wonderful stay at the cottage. It’s is incredibly well designed with great sense of space, beautiful finishes and homely feel. It is perfect for a couple or family with small kids. There are lovely walks in the area. But otherwise we hardly left the cabin. Check in and out was very smooth. And information on the cottage is very complete, well provided and accurate. We hope to return one day

We didn't use the braai, but it was available and all set up for us if we'd wanted to. Anna-Lucia also welcomed us to use her pool, which was a great treat for both kids and adults on a hot day.

  • The accommodation offers everything you need. The dogs take good care and are housed on the green piece of the hosts behind a fence. The shower works a little differently than you are used to, but that is not a problem. The bed is comfortable and the equipment of the apartment is very good. Ounooi greeted us and gave us a few tips. The place itself offers some shops and above all relaxed and good gastronomy at the end of the village. We ate good curry and steak at The Republic of Swellendam. On the day of departure there was very good coffee and delicious snacks in the Ikigai Café, that was really good! Clear recommendation for a short stop, the place is not really suitable for longer stays.

The town of Swellendam and its surrounding area is well worth a proper visit. Swellendam is the third oldest town in South Africa and has a lot of beautiful old buildings and a museum one can visit. Swellendam is also nestled at the foot of a big mountain which has numerous hiking trails, horse riding trails, dams and nature reserves. Other lovely and popular tourist attractions are the township tours and the Faerie Sanctuary garden.
  • Marietjies home was so lovely, it was a very good and also cute overnight stay in Swellendam for us and we had a lot of fun together with some gin. Grit, the tall dog, she was so brave and handsome and she was my special friend. The fresh baked bread we enjoyed really during our drive, thx so much. Want to come back some time.

    Claudia2020-03-13T00:00:00Z
  • Marietjie is great, the 100 year old house is great, breakfast is great. So everything was perfect! We travelled with a small child (10 months) and stopped between Cape Town and the Garden Route for one night. We had everything we needed. Only thing to mention is that most restaurants in Swellendam were closed on a sunday evening.

    Patrick2020-03-09T00:00:00Z
  • A freshly picked vase of garden flowers welcomed us on arrival. Filter coffee and a large plunger were among some of the other special touches. Marietjie is a generous hostess and made us feel right at home. To future guests, be sure to place an order for Marietjie’s freshly baked breads - 2 or more, what you can’t finish, you gift to somebody!

Come enjoy an all in one experience in our cosy cottage or funky campOvan’s only 300m from the Buffeljags river. Learn about the Sugar Bridge’s interesting history. Help feed the ducks, springbok and Choppie the ‘little’ pig. End your day with a sun downer on the banks of the river while wait for the train to pass.
The “Sugar Bridge” was built as part of a plan to provide a highway from Cape Town to the Eastern Cape, and opened in 1852 after several years of complex engineering and persistent problems: not the least of which is the tendency of the Buffejachts river to flood. This was a fearsome proposition, and it was decided that the piers should be made from massive blocks of local sandstone, to better withstand the force of the river. The solution was to build stone piers topped by a timber deck. There was a quarry nearby which would supply good quality sandstone, but where would timber of sufficient strength and length be obtained? By chance the Robert, en route from Burma to England with a cargo of teak, was wrecked at the mouth of the Lourens River at the beginning of 1847. The wood was ideal for a bridge deck, and enough timber for this purpose was purchased for £400 at the salvage auction, shipped to Port Beaufort and then hauled to the site by ox wagon, reportedly at the exorbitant transport cost of £800. The design Engineer saw a problem looming. The stones of the piers might each weigh a ton or two, but they would still be liable to move under the force of a flood if they were not held together with strong mortar. It was decided to use gypsum, better known as Plaster of Paris, as the cementing agent, and so an order was sent to France for a supply from the quarry in Montmartre which was its principal source. Something had to be added to the mix to prevent it from setting too quickly and the handiest retarding agent in the Cape in 1847 was common household sugar. The good citizens of Swellendam were no doubt fascinated when the materials for the bridge started to arrive on site – casks of Plaster of Paris, large teak beams, special saws to cut the stone blocks – and sacks of sugar! Surely these crazy Englishmen, reputedly members of the Royal Engineers (they weren’t) were not going to build a bridge out of sugar, the stuff Tant Sannie used for her famous koeksusters! But into the mix went the sparkling crystals, and so the new masterpiece became the “Sugar Bridge” Local legend has it that one particularly large sandstone block was so heavy that it broke the wheel of the wagon on which it was being carted from the quarry to the bridge site. The stone then slid off the back of the wagon and killed the brake-man, one Antonie. The stone was then rolled on tree trunks where it provided a convenient platform for unloading the timber before it was manhandled into position on the deck. On completion of construction some enterprising locals rolled “Antonie’s stone” to a high spot on the road where became a local landmark and a well known resting place on the highway. Antonie’s Stone can be seen on the mountain side of the National Road at the turn off to the farm Appelbosch. The Sugar Bridge carried traffic along the Garden Route highway for 101 years, until the N2 was opened in 1953. The bridge continued to carry local traffic, but the timber was beginning to deteriorate. At one stage there was an outbreak of punctures in village vehicles, until it was found that the heads of the nails in the bridge deck had worn away, leaving sharp spikes which penetrated the tyres. Then in the 1980′s a flood damaged one of the piers, and with the deck also deteriorating rapidly, it was decided to close the bridge permanently. The bridge has been declared a National Monument but due to lack of funds has never been restored to its former glory. Hopefully the romance of the Sugar Bridge will survive.

  • After we found Wilna's property, we really liked it there. The caravan is just a caravan, well furnished overall, the beds are good, the sanitary facilities are clean and the whole area is well maintained. It is very quiet overall, we didn't use the small pool - but also very nice! Vilnius is a friendly host.

  • Perfect for families and groups. But also as a couple or with friends you'll enjoy the quietness and beauty of this place. Especially during the night; the starry sky is just amazing! The House itself is spacious and very well equipped. Sonja and her family are wonderful hosts. If you're smart: bring some food. Swellendam is some minutes away and the roads are 'special'. Also on the property you can use your regular car, but you're happy if you have an SUV.

  • This Airbnb really has that special something. We were greeted very warmly and Lana helped us with great recommendations to make the most of our short time at Swellendam. She made all the reservations for us, which was super helpful. The room was super big, we got a free upgrade to a bigger room. The entire facility is perfectly maintained and wonderfully designed. Our room was even made, we didn't expect that. The dirty dishes from the previous evening were also rinsed off, it couldn't be better !! We can recommend this wonderful accommodation 100%, we would like to come back :-)

The Inn is perfectually situated so you have an amazing view of the mountains. We arrived in a heat wave and were thrilled to make use of the gorgeous pool. Our room was also upgraded to an amazing and large space, well equipped with all the comforts you could possibily need. Really outstanding decor, the entire property is expertly manicured. Lana provided us with information about the area and spots to check out, all of which were great recommendations. Very comfortable bed, 100% recommend this place!!!

  • My husband and I had a relaxing stay at the berry farm. We got a lovely surprise upon arrival as Henri upgraded us to a 6 sleeper as minor revamping was taking place at the smaller cottage. The farm has so many activities to keep busy even when it’s raining as it did while we were there. It was super cozy to sit near the fire place while watching the rain fall. Everyone on the farm is welcoming and friendly and I’d highly recommend this place for a break from the hustle and bustle of city life.

  • Lovely farm accomodation set in beautiful scenery on the edge of Swellendam. Would recommend any time.

  • This is a fun little (round!) cottage on a lovely farm that’s a campground/cabin getaway! The positive energy from the beautiful environment, kids enjoying their holiday, and our fabulous hosts was a delight! Be sure to go up to the pond to a little deck and enjoy the view of the farm, hills, and mountains. The mountains are spectacular! We didn’t get a chance to canoe around the pond or enjoy the tractor ride, but these are just a few of the pleasant activities available on the property.
