Entire home/apt in Lauriston
1920s tram and 1950s caravan accommodation. The property is perfect for solo travellers, couples and groups of up to 4 guests. It's set on an acre which backs onto the Lauriston forest, and includes a tiki bar, indoor wood fire, campfire and BBQ area, hammocks, boardgames, books + more. Just 1 hour from Melbourne, 5 minutes from Kyneton, 20 minutes from Daylesford and Trentham. Please note there's a 2 night minimum on Friday & Saturday. Photos added regularly on Instagram: @campkulning
Please note there are (incredibly lovely) neighbours living close to the tram, so unfortunately it isn't the right fit for those looking for absolute seclusion OR for anyone looking party and make a lot of noise. Although Camp Kulning backs onto the forest, it is in a residential area and is located just off the road which connects Kyneton to Daylesford and other nearby towns. Please view the map to get better idea of where the property is situated to ensure it's what you have in mind.
Lauriston is the perfect base to explore the Macedon Ranges and Victoria's spa country, with Kyneton, Daylesford, Hepburn Springs, Trentham, Woodend, Taradale, Hanging Rock, Castlemaine, Malmsbury, Turpins Falls, Trentham Falls all within a half hour drive.
Lauriston is a one hour drive from Melbourne and is best accessed by car, however there is a train station in Kyneton and taxis available.
Great for solo travellers, couples, and groups of up to 4 guests.
Camp Kulning sleeps groups of 1 through to 4 people, the 2 beds are housed in a 1920s W-Class tram and 1950s caravan. The property is set on an acre which backs onto the Lauriston forest, and includes an undercover BBQ area, a retro tiki bar hiding inside one of the sheds, veggie garden, and a campfire area with cast iron cooking equipment for fireside snacks. There's plenty to keep entertained including croquet, bocce and table tennis, plus a hammock and picnic blankets. There's a walking track through the forest just behind the house, and at sunset kangaroos stop by for a visit in the adjoining paddock.
The W-Class tram (aka Jean Claude Van Tram) was in operation between the 1920s and 1980s, and has recently been transformed into accommodation. Its lounge room, bedroom, kitchen and bathroom are all decorated with vintage furnishings. The lounge area has a wood fire, comfy chairs to seat 4 people, bar cart, books and board games. The bedroom has a queen bed with electric blanket and split system aircon / heating. The small kitchen is a simple set up, equipped with 2 portable hot plates, bar fridge and a breakfast bench which seats 2 people (there's a table for 4 outside). It's stocked with pots and pans, toaster, kettle, crockery and utensils, plus some cooking basics and breakfast cereals. The bathroom has a shower, basin and in the drivers cabin there is a waterless (and completely odourless!) compost toilet. The toilet and bathroom can be accessed from both inside and outside of the tram, making it convenient for guests sleeping in the caravan. The water from the shower and sinks are filtered though to a grey water treatment system which is then recycled to water the lawn.
The 1952 Globetrotter caravan is located 30 metres from the tram. It's a sweet little thing. It sleeps 2 people in a double bed, is powered, and includes a portable fan or heater if needed. Please note that caravan guests will need to use the kitchen and bathroom facilities in the tram.
The property is also shared with a tiny private cottage, which I live in during the week but is empty over the weekends. Please see the 'interaction with guests' section for more details.
If you're considering staying at Camp Kulning that is wonderful news but please keep in mind that it's located in the country, you'll most likely come into contact with bugs and your shoes will probably get dirty. You'll sleep comfortably but please don't expect anything fancy or luxurious - it's furnished with old treasures found in op shops. The tram is 90 years old! It has some wear and tear as you’d expect, but adds to its charm. The place is no-frills, ramshackle and rustic. It's also unique and very fun, and is the perfect place for those looking to switch off and relax.

The property has been lucky enough to feature in: frankie magazine and their interior design book Spaces Volume 3, Broadsheet, Apartment Therapy, Country Living, The Age newspaper, Concrete Playground, Smith Journal, Lunch Lady, Countryphiles, travel website AWOL, Messy Nessy Chic, and the video for Fraser A. Gorman's song Broken Hands.
"A true forest-bound getaway. It's where those suffering waves of wanderlust and a good dose of wonder go to sooth their souls and connect with the great outdoors" - Countryphiles
"like something out of a Wes Anderson movie... a tiny country amusement park" - AWOL
"Sleeping in a tram has never been so appealing" - Broadsheet
Aside from the private cottage, guests have use of the entire property.
Friday and Saturday nights - Guests will have sole access to the property. I’ll say a quick hello upon arrival and show you around, and then the place is all yours.
Sunday through to Thursday nights - I live at the property 5 days a week, and guests are welcome to share the space with me at a discounted rate. My little dog Tex and I stay in a tiny cottage located 30 meters from the tram and 10 metres from the caravan. You will still have access to everything including the campfire, hammocks, BBQ area, tiki bar etc. Tex is a poodle x shih tzu, loves pats and giving high fives, and he and I have our own small fenced-off yard tucked away behind the cottage. No doubt guests and I will bump into each other occasionally, and I’m always happy to have a coffee and a chat if you’d like, but also just as happy to give you complete privacy.
Please feel free ask any questions!
A Plot In Common is a 10 acre family farm nestled amongst rolling hills and dense native forest, just 80 minutes north-west of Melbourne. The original part of the home was built in 1947 as part of Robin Boyd's Small Homes Services project. A new extension embraces the Northern aspect, viewing the gardens, and the rolling hills. One of the original buildings on the property is the 19th century barn, which has been gently restored and is affectionately dubbed The Old Girl.
The Macedon Ranges is an area with spectacular forests, natural mineral waters and historic villages. You can visit mineral spas and wellness retreats, sample local grown food and wine, visit wineries and country pubs, and be inspired by the incredible artistic community. Pack a picnic, visit Hanging Rock, local farmers markets, and antique shops.
I am happy to recommend places to visit during your stay.
Your own vehicle is required.
Gumboots are recommended for all seasons when visiting our property.
Our home has been designed and converted to create the space and comfort for our growing family. We grow as much of our own food as possible and encourage our guests to pick some produce from the garden. The Old Girl is a space to appreciate the history of this farm and enjoy a meal in the 19th century walls if you choose.
Guests have access to the whole property, home, and barn. The tack room is the only area that we ask guests not to enter.
You can call me with any questions during your stay at A Plot In Common

Just recently we added a new member to our family: gorgeous "Lucky", a beautiful little puppy.
We are happy to provide breakfast provisions for you, weather allowing you could always enjoy your breakfast on either the veranda or terrace and watch our chooks running around in the garden and the cows and sheep in the neighbouring paddocks.

Just an hour's drive from Melbourne, Kyneton is a gorgeous country town. The 1850s Gold Rush left it with a legacy of lovely bluestone buildings but these days, a different kind of boom is drawing food lovers from across the country. Flagship restaurants such as Source Dining and Mr Carsisi have launched a culinary renaissance that now encompasses artisan bakers and provedores. Throw in a quirky selection of shops and galleries, and the rows of heritage buildings along Piper Street are now amongst the most exciting to visit in Victoria.
