Your guide to Kiama

All About Kiama

Kiama is a rural coastal town around two hours south of Sydney in New South Wales. Its beaches, blowholes, and rock formations attract both local and international visitors, while the small-town feel makes for a peaceful getaway surrounded by nature, yet within reach of Sydney’s buzzing bars and historic museums. Kiama is also a major road trip pit stop because of its numerous beaches, each with its own character, ranging from soft and sandy Kiama Surf Beach to the more rugged, boulder-strewn Boneyard Beach, both of which are popular with locals in summer. The town also boasts a proud farming tradition, which you’ll see in the use of locally sourced ingredients at restaurants throughout Kiama. And you can delve into the history of this seaside escape with a trip to Kiama Light, the town’s landmark lighthouse, which dates back to 1887.

The best time to stay in a holiday rental in Kiama

Summer is when you’ll get long sunny days on the beach and plenty of opportunities to practice surfing. This is also the ideal time of year for visiting Budderoo National Park to see its greenery in all its splendour. Winter is much more temperate and can get down into the single digits Celsius, so be sure to pack a jacket if you’re going hiking. The autumn and spring seasons experience warm weather that isn’t particularly hot or rainy, making them good times to visit if you’re looking to spend a day or two driving up to Sydney in more comfortable conditions.

Top things to do in Kiama

Bombo Headland Quarry Geological Site

Get a sense of the singular geography of the region by driving 10 minutes north past Bombo Beach to the Bombo Headland. This is an internationally renowned location and heritage-listed spot because of its flat-sided columns. It’s also a stunning place to watch the waves crash into the quarry between the pillars.

Saddleback Mountain Lookout

Located just a 10-minute drive outside of the town, this is a great afternoon excursion for panoramic views. There are multiple lookout points that take in the surrounding landscape and the ocean. It’s also well worth the hike to build up an appetite before returning to town and trying one of the local restaurants.

Budderoo National Park

This national preserve is about an hour’s drive from Kiama along some winding country roads. The park is especially known for its waterfalls and the boardwalk through the rainforest. Remember to bring lunch to take a break at one of the picnic areas after hiking the trails.
