Your guide to Kangaroo Valley

All About Kangaroo Valley

A secluded oasis, Kangaroo Valley is a small town in the Shoalhaven region of New South Wales. Set in a gently sloping, picturesque valley nestled between the high mountains of the Southern Highlands and the state’s South Coast, the town has changed little over the years, evident from the Hampden Bridge, the oldest suspension bridge in Australia.

Known for waterfalls, rivers, and locally-produced food and wine, Kangaroo Valley is popular for weekend trips from Sydney and has numerous holiday houses. Nearby Morton National Park is home to the dramatic Fitzroy Falls, along with lush bushwalking and mountain bike trails, while Flying Fox Pass looks over the valley’s rich rainforests and countryside.

Visitors come to immerse themselves in nature, explore the tranquil Kangaroo River in a kayak or canoe, and dance the night away during festival season. The region’s lush rolling farmland produces well-regarded wine and fresh produce available at the monthly Kangaroo Valley Village Markets. The town also supports a strong artistic community that in 2007 started the biannual Arts in the Valley festival of music, sculpture, and visual arts.

The best time to stay in a holiday rental in Kangaroo Valley

Kangaroo Valley sees comfortable temperatures throughout the year with minimal seasonal changes making it a perfect retreat. Warm summers see sunny skies and moderate humidity perfect for canoeing and kayaking the Kangaroo River. Make sure you bring a hat and sunscreen while enjoying the Kangaroo Valley Agricultural and Horticultural Show in February.

As temperatures get cooler, the valley bursts with vibrant fall colours, an ideal time to enjoy a scenic drive. Escape the chill during the winter months with a stop at a local cafe or head to the Kangaroo Valley Pioneer Museum and learn about the area’s history and culture. Bushwalkers will enjoy the cool, dry conditions for hiking in nearby Budderoo National Park. Spring brings blooming bush flowers, comfortable temperatures, and local Australian and international performers to town to jam out for the annual Kangaroo Valley Folk Festival every October.

Top things to do in Kangaroo Valley

Fitzroy Falls

Fitzroy Falls plunges over 80 metres to the valley of Morton National Park. Delve into local history, spot wildlife, and relax with some birdwatching here. There’s a short wheelchair-accessible boardwalk with views of the plunging waterfalls and well-marked walking tracks for exploring the surrounding wilderness. The East Rim and Wildflower tracks take you to lookouts with superb views, while the West Rim track showcases vistas of gorges and even more waterfalls.

Southern Highlands Wine Trail

Kangaroo Valley sits in the Southern Highlands, a premier wine-growing region home to more than 60 wineries and 16 cellar doors. The fertile soil, high altitude, and temperate climate are ideal for award-winning wine and other quality produce. Try local specialties, including cheeses, olives, olive oil, truffles, berries, and pome fruits.

Water activities

The Kangaroo River is an enduringly popular spot to launch a kayak and explore the region from the water. Spot wildlife up on the bank and admire the local fauna while you slowly make your way downstream. If you’re interested in swimming, head to Flat Rock or under Hampden Bridge which offer plenty of family-friendly fun, from rope swings to rockpools.
