Your guide to Healesville

All About Healesville

Situated along the Watts River in Victoria, Healesville serves as a gateway to the famed wine and culinary region of the Yarra Valley and as a vacation destination of its own. Founded during the Gold Rush of the 1860s, it grew with the construction of the Maroondah Dam in the early 20th century before solidifying more recently as a getaway for people looking to escape the hustle and bustle of nearby Melbourne. A calm and quaint country town, much of Healesville’s draw comes simply from its lush surrounds and ample parklands, including Badger Weir Park and the European gardens at the Maroondah Reservoir Park. But visitors also enjoy the thriving food and art scenes — especially at the Memo, a memorial hall now serving as a cultural center — historic railway.

The best time to stay in a holiday rental in Healesville

Healesville’s short summers warm up but never broil, while the clouds stick around much of the year, giving it a pleasant climate that helps grow the region’s signature greenery. Winters cool off and tend to be fairly wet — averaging 18 days a month of rain — though intrepid visitors armed with rain gear can still enjoy many of the area attractions. In summer, only half as many days each month include rain and the average high temperatures go over 80 degrees Fahrenheit, while nights cool down to the mid-50s. Winter lows are around 40 degrees, and stay high in the mid-50s until spring arrives.

Top things to do in Healesville

Yarra Valley Railway

Though the 19th-century railroad tracks were closed to passengers in the 1980s, a volunteer organization runs a short tourist circuit using old trains from the 1950s to bring people through the scenic Yarra Valley and through a historic tunnel before returning to the station. The 35-minute voyage leaves regularly on Sundays and holidays throughout the year.

Hedgend Maze

Three big hedge mazes will get you lost — and, if you solve the cryptic puzzle, found — in this activity that makes excellent use of the Yarra Valley’s great greenery. A smaller maze caters to children, while the complex also offers miniature golf, Frisbee golf, and a fossil dig.

Maroondah Reservoir Park

Those looking for casual walks and shady resting spots can check out the options at Maroondah Reservoir Park — or just Maroondah Dam — where you can ascend the 134-foot dam wall or picnic at the popular Rose Steps Rotunda. The park also features landscaped gardens with a variety of native trees and a playground.
