Places to stay in Granity
Granity Sands is set on the beach of the lovely, artistic village of Granity. The beach is at the bottom of the garden, and there are many iconic bush and beach walkways surrounding us.
  • Sande's place is a quirky comfortable and very unique home that backs straight onto the beach. Sande is very obliging and caring and also very passionate and knowledgeable about her town and surrounding area. She is a wonderful host who goes above and beyond and her pooch Max is adorable as well.

  • Sande's place was a wonderful place to wind down and relax after the Heaphy Tramp. There is a lovely deck area and garden and the end of the garden leads onto the beach - fabulous for walks. Sande made us feel very comfortable and welcome and even porvided a pot of home made soup on our arrival. Thank you again!

    Granity, West Coast, New Zealand

Situated in a rural mining settlement, 28kms from Westport on State Highway 67. The house is a typical 1950s family home with original decor and fixtures, a half acre section, houses on both sides, vege garden, fruit trees, 2 hens, 2 goats and a paddock backing on to native bush. It has a traditional a coal/ wood fire and new logburner. Large sunny guest room with private entrance opens onto porch with view of amazing sunsets and the sea, which is about 200metres across the highway.
Fully fenced areas at the back of the house. The front porch is also reached from outside. I have a big, friendly dog, 2 chickens and 2 goats. Our tap water come from a stream from the hill behind the house and is used for washing/showering. Our rainwater tank provides fresh clean water for drinking and cooking All rooms have a view of the sea and the bush.
Granity is a typical, rural, westcoast settlement. It has a mild climate with few frosts in winter and some lovely hot days in summer. Most of the properties are about half an acre and its common for people to grow their own fruit and vegies and have a few chickens, or goats. The beach is 5min walk away across the railway track and over 1km long. Theres a cafe, craft shop, 2nd hand shop, library, plant nursery and museum. 4kms up the road in Ngakawau is convenience store, hotel and cafe, and Ngakawau swimming pool. Hector Pottery is along this road. Stockton mine is up the hill to the north west about 15kms. It is a working, opencast mine. Granity was a typical mining town and coal is used in many homes for warmth (open fire), water heating (wetback) and cooking (coal range oven) and on a winter night you can see the coal smoke over the houses. Charming Creek Walkway starts at Ngakawau and is an easy, short stroll along the Ngakawau River to historic mining scenery.
  • Everything was very clean and chrissy received us very friendly and answered all our questions.

    Lukas2020-03-19T00:00:00Z
  • Chrissy is a very organized and lovely host with a beautiful house. Our room had direct access to the porch with a fantastic view at the ocean. The beds are very comfortable, so we got a good rest before heading to our next stop. The area is very quiet and idyllic. However, the cherry on top was Chrissy's handsome dog Strike who is very friendly and welcoming. Overall, we really enjoyed our stay and can highly recommend the place, especially if you'd like to stay a little outside of town.

    Lina2020-03-11T00:00:00Z

  • All good, thank you.

    Vitalijus2020-03-05T00:00:00Z
  • We spent three nights at Chrissy’s place and highly recommend the experience. Chrissy was extremely accommodating with information and tips on things to do in the local area. We even enjoyed a very nice walk with Chrissy and her lovely dog Striker. You won’t find a nicer canine anywhere. Everything about the house was as good or better than advertised. The home is extremely neat and tidy and probably a very good example of a traditional West Coast New Zealand home. Full marks for a great experience. Stay there if you have a chance.

    Blair2020-02-20T00:00:00Z
  • Chrissy is a great host who never tires of giving tips. Your house is nicely furnished and offers everything your heart desires. We had interesting conversations and shared our travel experiences. Thanks to Chrissy, we were brought closer to the life of kiwis in remote places. The room was large, quiet at night. We were able to park the car right in front of the entrance. Communication went smoothly. Next time we would stay longer

    Rebecca2020-02-16T00:00:00Z
  • We really enjoyed staying at Chrissy‘s. It was such a nice place to stay and it is very close to the sea so that we did see the sunset in the evenings which was pretty nice. Moreover, Chrissy is such a friendly and helpful host and we would recommend her to everyone. Furthermore, her dog Striker is a beautiful and cool dog and he made our stay to such s special one. All in all, the room was cute and tidy and it was a pleasure to stay with Chrissy and her dog.

If you love the sound of the sea then this is the place to be. Very relaxed atmosphere. Free ranging chickens are amusing to watch as they wander around the garden. Our space is large and open plan. Beach front access, spacious outdoor area. Great walking and mountain bike tracks.
Buller Mines Rescue building has alot of character remaining from when it was a working building, even down to the locker room style shower and toilet. It was once what the name suggests, a mines rescue building where mine workers were trained to perform rescues. We still have a working mine up the hill from us in Stockton which can be toured with prior booking through outback tours in Westport
The Charming Creek walkway is very close and is highly recommended. There's plenty of biking and walking tracks and you can access the beach from the house. Millerton bath house is worth a look too and Deniston is not that far away, there's alot of history up there.
  • Wonderful hospitality in a beautiful setting. Tania could not have been more accommodating during my stay, well worth spending at least one night in this tranquil place! Would highly recommend!

    Steven2020-03-09T00:00:00Z
  • A beautiful house in a wonderful beach location. Tania is incredibly hospitable and it was a pleasure to meet her and her husband. Everything was sparkling clean and comfortably furnished. We would have loved to stay longer

    Klaus2020-02-29T00:00:00Z
  • Tania has a beautifull spacious historical house with some characteristics of that period. A Nice green garden with chickens and ducks and especially Marley. You can walk directly on the beach from the garden. And not to forget an own seal colony on a rock in the sea. What do you want more. Tania was a great host.

    Arnold2020-02-04T00:00:00Z
  • We enjoyed our (too short!) stay at the house of Tania with the unforgettable view. Tania is a very nice person.

  • An outstanding place to stay with an equally outstanding host in Tania. It’s a great location if you’re prepared to make the effort.Wonderful setting and garden with the chickens, ducks and the beach literally a stone’s throw away

  • Everything is perfect here! The hole house is placed nearby the sea, its veranda with view to their beautiful garden. Tania and Michael were amazing, unbelievable kind and very oblingingly! We had such a great time there :)

    Tobias2020-01-03T00:00:00Z
  • Many thanks to Tania and Michael for hosting me at very short notice. They have a lovely home, beautifully maintained and full of character, engendering a sense of life on this part of the West Coast in the middle of last century. It is in an idyllic spot right on the beach and blissfully quiet at night. Their hospitality was outstanding.

Our slightly shabby 1910 villa is the perfect place to escape and read a few great novels. It has high ceilings, plenty of light, a colourful mix of decor, and lots of great books (Classic, modern, and NZ literature). The guestroom features bay windows and ornamental fireplace. Must love pets - we have one friendly beagle (Eager) and three aloof cats (Augustus, Remus & Romulus). Sample a wide range of local jams, honey, bread, milk, muesli, fruit and milk for breakfast.
This family home has been well-loved and is need of some repair and TLC, but that kind of adds to the character. The old cast iron bath has some rust marks and it takes a little while to get the temperature in the shower just right. My son and I will be your hosts and you can make yourself completely at home, with full use of all facilities and access to our vege garden. Tea, coffee, and sugar are provided in the guest room.
Just 25 minutes' walk along the Kawatiri RIver Trail to the beach, or five minutes' walk to shopping and cafes on Palmerston Street (Westport's main street). There is a corner shop and fish and chip shop at the end of our street. The neighbours are very friendly. A short drive to many of Buller's best attractions: The seal colony at Cape Fowlwind (20 minutes), caving at Charleston (30 minutes), Denniston mining village (20 minutes). Westport is nestled between three popular tramping tracks: THe Heaphy, The Old Ghost Road, and The Paparoa Track.
  • Ellen’s place is charming, adorable and comfortable. The bedroom has beautiful bay windows and a lovely bookcase with fantastic reads. I greatly enjoyed stopping here and was able to rest well and easy. Ellen’s hospitality was very inviting and there is a very comfortable amount of privacy. I highly recommend her place! A truly beautiful, unique and wonderful stay! Great access to all sorts of local activities and adventures.

    Sanjay2020-03-12T00:00:00Z
  • Richard’s place was more than perfect! He met us upon arrival and is a very friendly host 😄 The place has lots of space in every room - wonderful! Richard has built the Airbnb studio himself on his property fronting to the beach and the layout is quite spectacular; There’s a large area outside of the bedroom with a couch, tables and foosball table (which I only lost to my husband by 1 point haha), perfect area to relax with a pizza from “Smiley’s Pizza” which was a couple minutes drive down the road. In the main living area is the spacious bedroom and then kitchen with everything you would need to eat with. Bed was great - didn’t wake up once during the night. Bathroom is beautiful, has a waterfall shower head, and of course everything is brand new. This place is perfect for however many nights stay you need, not just one! Oh and don’t forget to visit the Seal Colony less than 10 mins from the place, awesome to see, they are hilarious 😂 If you want to stay near Westport, don’t look any further! Thanks for a wonderful stay Richard 😊

  • The place of Tony and Leanne is great! They are very nice and caring people as well!

    Eva2020-03-19T00:00:00Z
  • A warm welcome awaits at this abode where a clean and bight room is provided to give you a good nights sleep and a tasty breakfast. Situated within a short walk to town we would always return if we visited the area again. Tony put a lot of effort into making sure we had everything we needed which was much appreciated.

    John2020-03-14T00:00:00Z
  • It was great to stay at tony and leannes place! They are very welcoming, lovely and cook you breakfast in the morning. They have a lovely dog which my friend was a great fan of! Great accommodation for a night in Westport

    Kimberley2020-03-12T00:00:00Z
  • Tony is an attentive, responsive, and down to earth host. The cabin is clean and well presented, but tight on space. There is little room to walk around and no work space available. However, facilities in the main house are available for guest use. The obvious downside to this is having to put shoes on and walk outside to access it. It’s a minor inconvenience, but something to consider when booking. The bathroom is modern and features an excellent shower. We declined breakfast, but it is provided. Overall, good value, friendly host with a knack for hospitality, and immaculate space.

Right on the beach of beautiful Carters Beach, is our delightful new studio. Luxurious in set-up and Ideally situated between WestportTauranga bay, with its seal colony and top surfing, With a great golf cours just next door, it is really the west coast paradise. Fishing on the tip head, or walk on the beach at sunset. There are no cooking facilities, but there is a kitchenette with all the basics. Tableware, coffee and tea, a small fridge, microwave, toaster and jug. And a shared BBQ outside.
We created our Spacious Studio-1 in a French design. Lush, Modern, light and open, with some sunny yellow accents and original artwork. You will enjoy the comfort of our high quality and extremely comfortable King size beds and top quality 500 threadcount Egyptian cotton sheets. The spacious bathroom has a rain shower and heated mirror and cosy white towels. There is also an outdoor shower in front, if you want to rince off after a swim or a barefoot walk on the beach.
Just on an amazing stretch of beach and next door to a great golf course, Carters beach is a small and quiet community. So you can lay back and enjoy. There is a nice restaurant a bit further down the road and several restaurants and shops in town. And a great kids playground too, just across the road.
  • Just as we expected, in fact the decor is fabulous. Very stylish and comfortable. Extremely comfortable bed. Everything we wanted and great outlook over to the reserve and beach area. Great fish and chips just a few doors away - we chose to get takeouts but a lovely outdoor or indoor area for eating there. Friendly host. Nice to walk along the beach although a little windy so not for too long!! Would definitely recommend and stay again.

    Sue2020-03-17T00:00:00Z
  • Very comfortable modern apartment, fantastic location opposite the beautiful Carter's beach which goes for miles, if you enjoy walking or running on the sand, it's an awesome location. Also very close to seal colony, cliffs with birds and lighthouse. Great for visiting the sights of the wild west coast. Very friendly hosts, would highly recommend.

    Angela2020-03-16T00:00:00Z
  • Well set up with everything you need. Great bed

    Louanne2020-02-29T00:00:00Z
  • Richard’s place is a nicely decorated and a very clean unit. Richard greeted us on arrival and walked us through the space and was very friendly. The beach is literally across the street and it was beautiful! Stay here if you’re in the area.

    Victoria2020-02-21T00:00:00Z
  • Great hosts! A very playful and kid friendly dog! And a great view! Recommended, we are a family of 5 and we all slept comfortably.

    Alvaro2020-02-18T00:00:00Z
  • Decor is exceptional modern and very classy uptown. You can hear the waves crashing from your patio. Fabulous bed and linens.

    Carrie2020-02-16T00:00:00Z
  • Our friendly and helpful hosts Richard and Isabelle have worked hard to create a trendy, spacious and spotlessly clean unit for their guests. The bed must get special mention for it’s beautiful high quality linen and unbelievable comfort. Location is ideal - being across the road from the beach and handy to Westport and surrounding attractions too

    Chris2020-02-12T00:00:00Z
  • Our stay at Richard’s place was perfect. The place is fabulous - expertly fitted out with all the right amenities including an incredibly comfy bed and couch. We loved watching Netflix each night over wine and cheese. The views of the water were amazing and being able to pop across the road to the beach was just the cherry on top. Both Richard and his wife are also amazing hosts and made us feel incredibly welcome. The place is also just a quick drive to town for the grocery shop, but luckily enough, there was even a fabulous restaurant with a dairy just a 2 minute walk away. Highly recommend this spot, if we are ever back in the area, we will most definitely hope Richard’s place is available to stay. Enjoy! :)

Highly recommended by Lonely Planet, Rough Guide, DuMont and Peti Futé. Unique hydro-powered lodge 100m above the Tasman Sea. Ready access to beautiful beaches, rivers and walks. The lodge is only accessible via a 10 min walking track up the hill (REASONABLE LEVEL OF FITNESS REQUIRED). Luggage transport via prior arrangement. Self-catering (no breakfast provided). Shared bathrooms located in the main building. Due to its location the lodge is not suitable for children under 5 years of age.
The Old Slaughterhouse is a self-catering lodge and offers comfortable and affordable accommodation. Our rooms are simple but cosy and made up with linen, pillows, duvets and hot-water bottle (if needed) are provided. All rooms are surrounded by a large deck from which you can enjoy stunning views and sunsets over the Tasman Sea. Our facilities include: •Two double rooms: Comfortable double beds, fully made up •Two twin/triple rooms: The twin/triple rooms contains three fully made up single beds and can be booked either as a twin or a triple room • Shared bathroom facilities (2 showers, 2 toilets), LOCATED IN THE MAIN BUILDING, a short walk from the bedrooms •Space for tents •Shared kitchen: Our spacious kitchen is fully equipped, there are two gas hobs and an oven available, lots of pots and pans, crockery, cutlery and of course a fridge but no microwave. Tea and coffee is available at any time. All you'd need to bring is your own food.
The Old Slaughterhouse offers you a choice of either a relaxing retreat or an activity filled visit. There are many kilometres of unspoilt deserted beaches, beautiful rivers and fascinating walks in close proximity, like the Charming Creek Walkway, one of the South Island's top five short walks. If you love the outdoors, explore the numerous mountain bike and walking tracks in this area, such as the Old Ghost Road, or discover the region's mining history by visiting the Denniston Mine. Or simply sit back and relax to enjoy the tranquility and peace at this unique place, 100 metres above the sea: read a book, listen to music and feel free to do nothing. On many occasions during the summer months you can observe from our verandas Hector's Dolphins surfing and feeding in the water. It's a truly unique experience! Situated almost halfway between Punakaiki and Karamea, The Old Slaughterhouse is the ideal place to plan your day trips. Spend a day in Punakaiki to explore the iconic Pancake Rocks, and experience the wonders of the West Coast Heritage highway. In Karamea you will find the start of the Heaphy Track, one of New Zealand's famous Great Walks, and the Oparara Basin, both truly magic places to visit – even for a day. ... and then come back and sit back on the veranda to watch a breathtaking sunset. If you enjoy being surrounded by peace and tranquility, uninterrupted views of the sea, bush and sky, beautiful sunsets, birdsong and nature, then you will enjoy your stay at The Old Slaughterhouse traveller's lodge.

  • It's a wonderful place to stay. We really enjoyed our stay there and would definitely come back again.

  • A place with a bit of taste of the world, the sea in an enchanting setting. The benefits of camping without the inconveniences. The tree house is very nice, good beds, a nice decor and a great view. You share the kitchen and bathroom with campers: it is sometimes a bit just like equipment. Jesse was very welcome and good advice for walks. You can also dine on site, the restaurant is a friendly and pleasant place that you can access when you want. The gardens are beautiful. I recommend this place.

  • Fabulous place, loads and loads of space. Lots of lovely quirky touches. Great pies up the road at Granity.

  • We were told that in Westport it can rain. So we chose this big house and it rained (for 1 day) there was so much to do in doors. Michelle really thinks about the extra touches to make your experience fabulous. House is located 45 minutes drive from Westport in a rural setting. Beach access is 5 minutes drive and a must go to. Easy drive to many lovely walks. So many things to do outdoors also. Thank you again.

  • This is definately a 'must do'. Location is perfect!, and the Log House is so super comfy and welcoming you will feel instantly at home!!.. There is a 'pie cart' down the road in Granity that makes the most scrumptiouse homemade pies and sausage rolls, a must visit. The tracks along the Chasm is a photographers dream. Each and every stone and small rock on the beach is a gem. If you're reading, do it!! Book it now!!

  • We had a night with Mike and Marla. It was a stopover for the drive from the north to the south. When we saw the room and experienced the very nice and warm hospitality of Marla, we could have stayed three or four nights. Breakfast was very good and Marla gave us great tips for the next and the next day after talking about our travel plans. We highly recommend Mike and Marla's accommodation.

A gorgeous location on the banks of the Orowaiti River and less than 2km from Westport town centre. The perfect place to watch the ever changing river and abundant bird life. Relax in the comfortable, stylish open plan living area or soak up the sun and views of water and mountains from the extensive deck. Westport is a great base for anyone who loves beaches, surfing, fishing and nature walks. The Old Ghost Road is a magnet for hikers and bikers.
We have a canoe available for adventures on the river and a big back yard for kids to play. We also have a portacot available which can be made up ready for you.
  • We absolutely loved staying at Alison's house - it was very spacious and comfortable but we did note the traffic was very noisy, particularly during the night. Despite this we all slept well in the comfy beds and would definitely stay again.

    Alica2020-03-07T00:00:00Z
  • The house is wonderful and we were in love with this place right away. Alison is a great host, who installed a cot for our one year old. Westport is quite unattractive but the house and the surroundings are quite stunning and beautiful.

    Conor2020-02-09T00:00:00Z
  • A great place to stay. Alison was a very helpful and responsive host. The house was well equipped and roomy. It has an open and light atmosphere with a wonderful outlook over the inlet. At times there was traffic noise. If you want to watch films etc bring your iPad with Netflix. Overall would definitely stay again.

From the 'tiphead' if you are fortunate, you may spot the Hectors Dolphins. Small basic budget off the grid bach /cabin quite semi rural area on a 7 acre block set well away from the main house. 13 km from Westport Township Nice views of farmland out to the Tasman Sea Sleeps up to four people Wood burning fire Gas Hot water and cooking
BASIC BUDGET BACH /CABIN Set in a quite rural setting just 13 km or 15 minutes from Westport. Only a couple of minutes drive from the beach and a quaint country pub. Or 15 minutes Denniston Historic Mine Site and 25 minutes to the gateway to The Northern Buller and Karamea. The bach/cabin is on a corner of seven acre block set well away from the main house so you have your own privacy. This is fully off the grid hydro and solar powered 2 bedroom BASIC BUDGET BACH / CABIN The bach isn’t huge as shown in the photos it is only just over 40sqm.The bedrooms are only 2.4 m x 2.8 m one bedroom has a double bed. The other room has bunk beds. All beds are very comfortable and linen is supplied. From the lounge you look out over farm land out to the Tasman Sea. Listen to the birds and the creek, or to the distant sea and the odd rumble of a passing coal train or just the shear nothing but the gentle breeze and the grass growing. Step outside on a clear night and be amazed at the amount of stars you can see. It has gas hot water and gas oven stove, pots pans etc. It has a small wooden deck at the front. There is no lawn the yard is done in road chip. Outside is a wooden picnic table and sun umbrella. Also there is a small BBQ. It is priced accordingly to reflect what it is. As you have booked a stand alone bach we leave guests to themselves and do not intrude on your time here. But we are only a text message or walk up the driveway away if you cannot work out how something works. We do supply a detailed instruction manual including pictures on things like stove hot water the power etc work. There is parking for up to two vehicles but only one carport. It is powered by alternative power. It has a large solar system, wind turbine and a small hydro which helps trickle feeds the batteries at night. The power is converted to 240 v so runs just like a normal house. Directly in front of the bach is a small creek so may not be suitable for young children.
A quite country pub just 3 minutes down the on the main road which does good meals. A Quite beach just 3 minutes down the road. Easy access to the beach for walking / fishing

  • Great accommodation. Has all the basic amenities and the bathroom/shower were great, hotel quality. Only a few minutes out of town, so was very peaceful & you could see the milky way. Nice garden & indoors plants + cute piwakawaka, weka and sheep outside!
