Your guide to Florence

All About Florence

From its grand historic museums to its intimate galleries, Florence has long drawn in visitors for its renowned art scene. Tuscany’s capital is widely regarded as the birthplace of the Italian Renaissance in the 14th century, and it is bursting with art and culture, boasting the world-famous Uffizi Gallery and the Accademia — home to important pieces by world-famous artists. But take a wander through the city’s historic cobblestone streets and you will come across countless lesser-known, but still fascinating galleries and museums full of hidden gems. Once you are done with all that walking, you are sure to have built up an appetite, and Florence’s food and wine options will not disappoint. The city’s signature dish is the “bistecca alla Fiorentina,” a huge steak cooked over charcoal, just like it has been for generations. Be warned though, you will need a big appetite. In addition, Florence also lays claim to the invention of Italy’s most famous dessert, Gelato, in the 16th century.

The best time to stay in a holiday rental in Florence

Florence is a great city to visit all year round. A trip in April, May, or September will serve up pleasantly sunny days and milder nights, perfect for enjoying al fresco dining in the city’s many outdoor cafes and restaurants. If you are someone who enjoys slightly cooler weather, you may want to consider visiting in late February or early March, when the biggest festival in Italy takes over. Carnevale takes place in the weeks leading up to Easter and is one giant party before the restrictions of Lent — full of parades, masquerade balls, entertainment, and music. Whenever you decide to visit this magical city, you will find a range of Florence holiday rentals in and around the city centre to suit all tastes and budgets.

Top things to do in Florence

Walk along Ponte Vecchio

Take a slow wander along the iconic Florence landmark to find many bustling little shops built into the bridge’s sides, selling gold and silver jewellery, art, and trinkets. The medieval Ponte Vecchio (Italian for “Old Bridge”) opens right up at the midpoint offering fantastic views down the Arno River. For a different perspective, return for a stroll at sunset when the shops are closed and the mood is romantic.

Flea market at Piazza dei Ciompi

Head to the Sant’ Ambrogio quarter of Florence to Piazza dei Ciompi, where you will find a charming flea market full of local traders selling antiques and second-hand furniture. The market is open every day, but on the last weekend of each month it expands to over 100 stalls to create a truly bustling atmosphere. When you’vefound your souvenir, stop at an eaterie in the piazza for a slice of pizza and a coffee.

Borgo San Jacopo

Head over to Oltrarno on the other side of the Arno River, a lesser-visited neighbourhood where you will find Borgo San Jacopo, a secret little street near the Ponte Vecchio. This location provides a perfect vantage point for many of the city’s palaces and towers. It also offers breathtaking views over the old bridge and river.
