Your guide to Dwellingup

All About Dwellingup

Dwellingup is a picturesque small town in Western Australia, nestled in the majestic Jarrah forests of the Darling escarpment, around 90 minutes south-east of Perth. The Dwellingup region boasts several natural landscapes, from spectacular national parks to thriving river trails and towering old growth forests. The area is well known for its wealth of bushwalking trails and adventure activities including mountain biking, with arguably some of the best mountain bike tracks in Australia.

Dwellingup is also known for being a place to enjoy the tranquil natural bush settings. In addition, the area has a growing reputation for its food and wine, with an abundance of fresh produce and local wineries on the town’s doorstep. The main industry in Dwellingup has been the timber trade for well over 100 years. The town’s main attraction, the Hotham Valley Tourist Railway, pays tribute to the town’s heritage, with trains running along the tracks that were once dedicated to the thriving local timber industry.

The best time to stay in a holiday rental in Dwellingup

Dwellingup is a delight to visit in the spring months of September to November, when the warm weather provides ideal conditions for bushwalking and adventure activities. The bushland is also bursting with wildflowers in spring, making for a delightful sight. September is a great time to be in town for the Dwellingup 100 Mountain Biking event, where riders take on the spectacular forest tracks. March also provides good weather for the Dwellingup Pumpkin Festival — featuring over 100 stalls and 10 food trucks showcasing a range of local produce from the region. The summer months of December to February are filled with hot and dry days, ideal for swimming in the nearby Murray River. Whenever you decide to visit, you will find a good range of accommodations in Dwellingup to suit all budgets and tastes.

Top things to do in Dwellingup

Hotham Valley Train

Take a ride aboard the Hotham Valley Railway, through forest and farmlands to the towns of Etmilyn and Pinjarra. The train takes you through spectacular forest scenery, and at the end of your train journey there’s a pleasant walking trail through stunning wildflowers within the Jarrah Forest. The train runs on weekends from November to April and departs from Dwellingup Station in town.

Forest Heritage Centre

Visit the Forest Heritage Centre and explore the interpretative centre and the walk trails, learning about wildflowers, local wildlife, and the Jarrah Forest. A tree-top viewing platform 11 metres above the ground lets you enjoy the bush at canopy height. And a handmade timber cutter’s hut and campfire area can be reached from one of the bush trails.

Lane Poole Walking Trails

Enjoy a walk in Lane Poole Reserve, which covers 55,000 hectares and takes in the Jarrah forests and the Murray River Valley. In total there are eight walking tracks you can take in the reserve, most of which are around the Murray River, which forms rapids, small waterfalls, and deep still pools along the way, making for spectacular scenery.
