Your guide to Dicky Beach
All About Dicky Beach
With its white sandy beach and relaxed, coastal atmosphere, Dicky Beach is a popular vacation spot on the Sunshine Coast region of Queensland. The town was named after a steamship, SS Dicky, which ran aground here in 1893 after trying to find refuge during a cyclone. The beach is patrolled all year round, making it a safe spot for swimming and surfing, and it’s possible to hire a board or book lessons with local surf schools.
There’s also a skatepark and playground, and plenty of bike paths that run along the foreshore. The area around Dicky Beach is great for fishing, and there are several restaurants and cafes to choose from when it’s time to refuel. If you feel like venturing a little farther afield, you can take the nearby Caloundra Coastal Walk, which runs for 25 kilometers from Golden Beach to Mooloolaba Beach and includes jaw-dropping scenery and some historic sites.
The best time to stay in a holiday rental in Dicky Beach
Dicky Beach is known for its sunny weather and year-round warm climate. Spring is an ideal time to plan a holiday to this beachside town, as it’s quieter and still warm enough to swim in the ocean. Summer is the most popular time to visit Dicky Beach, though it can get hot and humid — with an average daily temperature of 29 degrees Celsius. Autumn is also very pleasant, with an average temperature of 26 degrees. Winter is usually quieter in Dicky Beach, though is still a nice time to visit. The average winter temperature during the day is around 21 degrees Celsius, making it a popular time for surfers seeking less crowded surf breaks.
Top things to do in Dicky Beach
The beach
As well as being a popular surf spot, Dicky Beach is patrolled all year round, making it a safe spot for swimming. If you’re keen to learn to surf, there is a surf school where you can book lessons and hire a board. Or you can simply relax on the white sand and enjoy the view.
Caloundra Coastal Walk
This popular walk stretches from nearby Golden Beach to Mooloolaba Beach. It’s a 50-kilometre return trip, but it’s possible to join the walk for certain sections, and to stop for a bite to eat along the way. There are also some heritage-listed historic sites along the walk that are worth visiting including the Kings Beach Bathing Pavilion, built in 1937, and a military jetty that was used during World War II.
Queensland Air Museum
Just ten minutes outside of Dicky Beach, the Queensland Air Museum is the largest aviation museum in Australia, featuring nearly 100 aircrafts that have been restored, rebuilt, and maintained. Spread over two hangars, the collection offers insight into Australia’s aviation history — from famous military battles to the country’s commercial airlines — and includes a replica of the first plane built in Queensland, made from wood and fabric.
