Your guide to Culburra Beach

All About Culburra Beach

The tranquil, coastal town of Culburra Beach makes for a relaxing holiday escape, with plenty of things to do and see. Framed by a river, lake, and ocean, Culburra offers an abundance of water-based activities year-round, including swimming, surfing, fishing, boating, and kayaking. The surf break on Culburra Beach is typically gentle and suitable for beginners, making it a great spot for a holiday surf lesson. There is also a good, child-friendly swimming area called Tilbury Cove at the eastern end of the beach.

For some history and culture, take a walk up to the Crookhaven Heads Lighthouse, or sample some of the region’s best produce at The Mill Marketplace in nearby Pyree — a local market showcasing wares from makers, creators, artists, and local businesses.

On the first Sunday of every month, it’s also worth making your way to the Culburra Beach Markets, where you’ll find all kinds of homemade goodies, local food, crafts, plants, and clothing.

The area around Culburra is also well known for its oysters, especially those from nearby Greenwell Point on the Crookhaven estuary, and you’re a stone’s throw from some of the region’s best wineries.

The best time to stay in a holiday rental in Culburra Beach

Located on the south coast of New South Wales, Culburra enjoys a temperate climate and is a lovely place to visit any time of the year. Due to its abundance of water activities, the area is at its busiest during the summer months, and the hottest and most humid month to visit is February. Winter can bring cool days and nights, though many visitors like how quiet the town — and its surf break — can be during this time. Culburra is also lovely in spring and autumn, when the temperatures are still fairly mild, it’s still possible to swim in the ocean without a wetsuit (for some). There are also plenty of markets throughout the year, including the Culburra Beach Markets, held on the first Sunday of every month.

Top things to do in Culburra Beach

The Beaches

The beautiful, crescent shaped beach is undoubtedly Culburra’s key attraction. It’s a popular surfing spot, along with nearby Warrain Beach, and there’s a protected, child-friendly section at the eastern end of the beach. There are surf lessons available, as well as board hire, and you can also go fishing or swimming at the northern end of the beach. Culburra Beach is also off-leash dog-friendly in the later evening hours.

Seafood Sampling

The area around Culburra is well known for its seafood, and there are several seafood restaurants and fish shops in town to choose from. Common local catches include flathead, whiting, and beam. If you love oysters, be sure to head to nearby Greenwell Point, where an oyster shack serves up freshly shucked delights.

Crookhaven Heads Lighthouse

When you’ve had your fill of the beach, you can explore the headland and Crookhaven Heads Lighthouse, which sits at the mouth of the Shoalhaven River. This lighthouse was built in 1904 to replace a dated, timber structure, and it includes the lantern from the former structure. Though the lighthouse is in need of some maintenance — and there are many locals calling for its restoration — it’s still well worth a visit.
