Your guide to Crescent Head

All About Crescent Head

Crescent Head is a pristine beach town located 440 kilometres north of Sydney in the Kempsey Shire of New South Wales — known for being one of the most famous surfing spots in Australia. In 2008, the town’s Killick Beach was named one of Australia’s National Surfing Reserves for its long, slow right-hand break — a world-famous break that attracts surfers from near and far. You will also discover beautiful sandy beaches and lush National Parks for bushwalking and camping. The area is also considered to be a great spot for whale watching.

Just south of Crescent Head is Goolawah National Park and Limeburners Creek National Park. These Parks are home to many significant Aboriginal cultural heritage sites that date back thousands of years. Crescent Head is also known for having a unique golf course overlooking the sea. It only has six holes but makes up for it with stunning views of the ocean and beyond.

The best time to stay in a holiday rental in Crescent Head

Crescent Head enjoys sunshine almost all year round, but is especially glorious between May and October, when the days are pleasantly warm and the nights are mild, perfect for enjoying beach activities and nature walks. The town also plays host to the annual Crescent Head Malibu Classic in May, the largest amateur longboard competition in the country. Summer is also a great time in Crescent Head for enjoying the beach. Although remember to pack sunscreen and a hat as it can get very hot between December and February. Whenever you decide to visit there is a wide range of Crescent Head accommodations.

Top things to do in Crescent Head

Surfing

Crescent Head is famous for surfing. The right-hand point break that wraps around the headland and into the bay is one of the longest right-hand waves in the world and is perfect for longboarders. If you do not have a board, you can hire one in town. If surfing is not your thing, there are plenty of spots on the beach for swimming, or just sit back and watch the surfers do their thing.

National Park nature walk

Crescent Head is surrounded by 60 kilometres of National Parks, making it a great spot for nature walks. The easy 1.4-kilometre walk through lush coastal rainforests to Big Hill is scenic and full of wildlife spotting opportunities. It also offers prime picnic spots to stop for a bit to eat along the way.

Crescent Head Lookout

Head up to Crescent Head Lookout for panoramic views of the town, and the beaches to the north and south. To get there, walk up the headland via the golf course and you will find a dirt trail that leads around the cliffs to the lookout. The walk takes you past one of the most unique golf courses in the world, with just six holes and stunning views.
