Your guide to Bunbury

All About Bunbury

Bunbury is the third largest city in Western Australia and an easy drive south of the capital, Perth. It is often known as the City of Three Waters, as it is surrounded by the rumbling surf of the Indian Ocean to the west, the calm waters of Koombana Bay — where you can often spot bottlenose dolphins swimming freely — and the tranquil Leschenault Inlet. All this water makes Bunbury a popular destination for water activities with many spots for surfing, stand-up paddleboarding, canoeing, and boating.

Bunbury is also something of a creative hotspot. The city is home to the largest collection of street and public art in regional Australia. Wander the streets to spot urban art and quirky characters painted by local artists on 20 electrical boxes scattered through the city. Bunbury provides visitors with great shopping options, including an array of independent stores on popular Victoria Street. The city also enjoys a lively cafe culture, along with bars and some of Western Australia’s best restaurants.

The best time to stay in a holiday rental in Bunbury

Bunbury is a great place to visit year-round. The city enjoys a Mediterranean-style climate, with over 3,000 hours of sunshine a year. Spring and autumn offer pleasantly warm days and milder nights, great for enjoying the town’s many water activities and outdoor dining options. In April, the annual Bunbury Show takes place with rides, entertainment, and exhibitions. The Bunbury Markets run on the first and third weekend of the month and are well worth a visit for locally grown produce, cakes, treats, and jewellery and clothing from local makers. Whenever you decide to visit you will find an excellent range of holiday accommodations and holiday homes in Bunbury to suit all budgets.

Top things to do in Bunbury

The Cappuccino Strip

Discover Bunbury’s popular Victoria Street, known by the locals as the Cappuccino Strip for its cosmopolitan atmosphere and the aroma of roasted coffee and sweet confections coming from its many cafes. The Strip is also home to popular bars and restaurants, as well as a selection of independent shops selling unique gifts. Look out for the town’s much loved Brother and Sister fountain sculpture.

Marlston Hill Lookout

Enjoy a leisurely walk out of the city centre to the Marlston Hill Lookout — a former lighthouse that has been brilliantly converted into a multi-level viewing tower. From here you will enjoy stunning 360-degree views of the coastline and surrounding areas, including the Bunbury Harbour, Koombana Bay, and the hinterland off in the distance.

Mangroves Boardwalk

Take the short drive out of the Bunbury City Centre to the Mangroves Boardwalk. There are over 70 species of birds inhabiting these wetlands, and it is a favourite breeding ground for Western Australia’s famous Black Swans — the state’s official emblem. Enjoy a slow walk along the wetlands boardwalk, or duck into the bird hides and observe the natural Australian wildlife up close.
