New to the market for June 2016, Little Forge is the kind of place that you dream of discovering - an exceptional three bedroom historic Cotswold Stone cottage with classic Inglenook fireplace, countryside views and a shallow brook flowing gently at the end of a lovely terraced garden. Originally the forge for the Cooper next door, Little Forge blends old-world charm with stylish modern elements. Understated from the front, stepping into Little Forge will captivate and delight.
Ever wished you had a friend with a stylish country cottage in a beautiful location in the world famous Cotswolds, one who also knew the best local restaurants, towns and hidden attractions?
New for June 2016, Little Forge is the kind of place that you dream of discovering - an exceptional three bedroom historic Cotswold Stone cottage, which originally served as the forge for the Cooper next door, that has been recently refurbished with great attention, providing the perfect blend of stylish modern living in a period setting.
Blockley itself is one of the Cotswolds’ best kept secrets - a stunningly vibrant village nestled into the side of a broad valley, with two pubs, a Norman church and a thriving community village shop and café. The village is also the setting for the BBC's popular mystery drama Father Brown, starring Mark Williams of Harry Potter fame.
Little Forge sits in an idyllic location within Blockley's historic centre, with wonderful pastoral views beyond the attractive terraced garden which leads to the gently flowing Blockley Brook (which was, incidentally, part of the original London to Worcester medieval road – it’s a ford). Guests at Little Forge will enjoy wonderful period features such as mullioned windows, beamed ceilings, exposed Cotswold stone walls, window seats and a large Inglenook fireplace, alongside the necessary modern facilities of a digital smart TV with WiFi connectivity for Netflix, Amazon Prime, etc.
Enter Little Forge and arrive in the thoughtfully decorated, large double-fronted living room complete with real-fire Inglenook fireplace, window seats and fully glazed French doors onto the wonderfully private internal courtyard - a real suntrap! There's comfortable seating for six people with alternative seating available courtesy of the window seats. The other end of the living room accommodates the entrance hall with a handy desk and plenty of storage for coats, boots, etc.
Make your way through the entrance hall into the bespoke kitchen and dining room, off which is the handy utility and cloakroom housing a washing machine, wc and basin. Storage under the stairs houses the ironing and cleaning equipment.
The light and spacious kitchen-diner includes an impressive range cooker with a five burner gas hob and two electric ovens, a full size fridge freezer, a dishwasher, microwave, small TV and kettle. There is plenty of work surface, thanks to a large kitchen island. This same island also acts to separate the dining area from the kitchen. The kitchen also benefits from wonderful light thanks to walls of glass and a series of roof lights. The dining area has a dining table with a combination of bench and chair seating for six.
The glazed folding patio doors from the dining room lead to an ample outdoor terrace with a six-person outdoor dining set with parasol and a charcoal barbecue. This, in turn, leads to the further terraced rear garden via a series of stone steps and ultimately to the "sundowner terrace" right beside the soft flowing Blockley Brook at the foot of the garden.
Back inside, the staircase leads up to the first floor landing, off which is the bright and airy family bathroom with double ended bath and overhead shower and stone top vanity basin unit. Fluffy white towels are provided for each stay.
Up one step from the landing towards the back of the house and you arrive in Bedroom 1 - the Master Bedroom. With lovely countryside views, this welcoming room exudes tranquility. The bed is a superking size. Not only does this room have ample built-in wardrobe and large chest of drawers but it also boasts a perfectly formed ensuite shower-room with wc and hand- basin.
Back to the landing and one step up towards the front of the house and you are in a small vestibule that leads to the other two double bedrooms. Bedroom 2 is a spacious room full of charm thanks in part to the exposed Cotswold stone chimney breast, but also the furnishings... a king size iron bed and two attractive chest of drawers (doing double duty as bedside tables). Its wonderful double-aspect floods the room with light throughout the day.
Bedroom 3 probably has the most character, with its exotic bespoke headboards and styling. Made up as a twin with two full sized single beds, it can be converted into a superking. It also has an ample built-in wardrobe.
All the rooms have blackout Roman blinds and beds are made up with the finest Egyptian cotton linen for a wonderful night’s sleep.
Parking is available on the quiet road directly out front of the property.
All in all, Little Forge is the perfect setting for a family holiday or for a group of friends wishing to explore the beautiful Cotswolds region.

17th century grade II listed character Cotswold cottage with large mature garden. Rural views and less than five minutes walk to the village green (swings), local shop and pub. Sleeps up to 11 in 4 bedrooms, with 2 bathrooms and an additional WC.
The village of Blockley is a unique collection of buildings, with houses dating from the 15th century onwards, reflecting its past glory of mills for silk production and is quite different in character to other north Cotswolds villages.
Blockley is a very peaceful charming village with its mill stream winding its way through the bottom of the valley. With many very enjoyable walks leading from the village and surrounded by beautiful countryside, Blockley has two public houses. The Crown Inn and Hotel is a former coaching inn and the Great Western Arms, which is very close to the cottage, belongs to the Hook Norton Brewery.
There is a local shop, five minutes walk from the cottage, which is a grocer, newsagent, post office, off-licence and café with free broadband.
Across the road is the village green with swings and picnic tables. Many charming and scenic walks start right at the front door.
Blockley is only 3 miles away from Moreton-in-Marsh, which can be reached from London Paddington by train in roughly 100 minutes. Also nearby are the beautiful villages and towns of Stow-on-the-Wold, Bourton-on-the-water, Chipping Campden, Chipping Norton, Broadway, the Slaughters, Burford, the spa town Cheltenham (well known for its links to horse racing) Shakespeare's birthplace, Stratford-on-Avon, Worcester with its cathedral and nearby Elgar museum, and the world-famous university town of Oxford, which is only one hour away.
Also within easy reach of the cottage you'll find Sudeley Castle, Blenheim Palace, Batsford Arboretum, Sezincote House, Warwick Castle, Hidcote Manor, Snowshill Manor and Chastleton House. For younger visitors there is the Cotswold Wildlife Park, the Cotswold Farm Park, and stables for horse-riding.
Pubs & Restaurants
Blockley and nearby villages provide a great range of places to eat and drink, offering great craft beers and traditional meals created using the finest locally-sourced ingredients. The house is situated very close to the Great Western Arms pub that is well known for its good food and ales - but the pub is quiet, respecting rules for noise etc (we find it very convenient!)
Nearby, Broad Campden is home to the The Bakers Arms, a good traditional pub serving a fine range of food and beers. In Bourton-on-the-Hill, The Horse and Groom is popular thanks to its wonderful garden. Other good pubs in the area include The Ebrington Arms in Ebrington and also The Red Lion and The King's Arms, which can both be found in Chipping Campden. In Stow-on-the-Wold, The Queen's Head and The Eagle and Child are very popular.
There's a huge selection of walking and rambling trails in and around Blockley. Search by 'place' on http://www.walkingworld.com/
We will send you a guide by email and there are many books/guides in the house you can borrow during your stay.
Examples include walks to Chipping Camden, Broadway and Batsford.
For bank/school holidays, July and August - minimum stay is 3 nights.
Many people just come for 2 nights at the weekend and we know many people prefer a relaxed check out on Sunday. You can request early check in or extended check out at £20 per hour but this can only be confirmed a week before. This is because late check out means we can't have a same day check in. To secure the cottage for an extended check out during the day at any time or early check in at any time, it is £100. Adjustments can be made to the price at anytime before check in.
The house is professionally cleaned and prepared for you - the cleaning fee covers setting up the house and beds before your arrival, turning over and cleaning the house and garden (which is quite large), as well as laundry (sheets and towels that we provide). This fee is separate to the nightly charge because this cost is the same whether you stay 2, 3 or 7 nights. Importantly, it is not payable if you have to cancel.
The Grade II listed house was built around 1620 and is made of golden Cotswold stone. It is believed to have belonged to the Bishop of Worcester as part of his Blockley estate. Blockley is a popular village in the Cotswolds which is found within a triangle formed by three renowned market towns: Chipping Campden to the North, Moreton-in-Marsh to the South East and Stow-on-the-Wold to the South. Being close to these three towns has led to increased footfall in the village, bringing with it good quality pubs and a lovely village shop/café.
As the village is away from main roads, it avoids the heavy tourist traffic and so visitors can get a real sense of rural life, enjoying the rolling countryside which falls within the Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty. The peaceful Blockley Brook attracts tourists and locals as a quiet place to relax in the warmer months. This brook, together with the other brook in the village, played a part in Blockley's history as there were once 12 water mills which provided work in various industries over the centuries, including silk production and flour milling.
Architecturally the village has quite a different character in comparison to the rest of the North Cotswolds as it has a more similar style to that of the villages in the Stroud valley, but here they have used a more golden stone. This design is reminiscent of wealthier times as the majority of the cottages were built during the 17th and 18th century, at the height of the industrial era.
A popular attraction in Blockley is Mill Dene Garden which is a partner garden of the Royal Horticultural Society. With a misty grotto, stream and seats around the mill pond, this is a lovely place to while away the time looking out for the kingfishers whilst enjoying a cream tea.
Car: Blockley is easily accessed by car, being located approximately 1 mile away from the A44 and approximately 3 miles away from the A429 (Fosse Way), which are two of the main roads through the North Cotswolds.
Train: The nearest railway station to Blockley is Moreton-in-Marsh (approximately 3 miles away), which has regular, direct services to London Paddington, with a typical journey time of approximately 90 minutes.
Plane: Birmingham International Airport: 42 miles, approximately 60 minute drive; Heathrow International Airport: 76 miles, approximately 90 minute drive; Bristol International Airport: 75 miles, approximately 90 minute drive.
The Cotswolds is a rural location and whilst there is access to public transport, it is highly recommended that you have a car.
