Your guide to Birregurra

All About Birregurra

Birregurra is a small town southwest of Melbourne with an impressive local food scene and easy access to popular lakes and beaches. People come here to dine at one of the world’s top 50 restaurants and to attend the annual art festival. The town is only a 40-minute drive to Lake Corangamite, the largest saltwater lake in Australia. Nearby Lake Colac, which has a small town with boutique shops and cafes, makes a great afternoon trip.

Birregurra is also ideally located close to the Great Ocean Road, a heritage-listed 240-kilometre winding, cliffside highway on the sea. Make your way and visit the iconic limestone rock formations, stacks, and arches. This is an iconic stretch of road that attracts visitors from all over, and is only a 30-minute drive away from the town.

The best time to stay in a holiday rental in Birregurra

Birregurra experiences four unique seasons while remaining quite temperate throughout the year. Springtime offers warm days and nights, and brings the annual Birregurra Festival and Art Show on the second weekend in October. The town also embraces a relaxed pace of life, and its biweekly farmers’ market from November to April underscores the town’s emphasis on the importance of local agriculture. The summer tends to be hotter but not humid, so this is a good time to head to the beaches around Geelong. Autumn kicks off the wet season but it’s still a nice time to explore nearby nature preserve trails. The wintertime is generally the wettest time of year, but it is also when you’ll want to visit national parks like Great Otway to see the thundering waterfalls in full flow.

Top things to do in Birregurra

Great Otway National Park

This national park on the southern tip of Cape Otway is worth the hour and 15-minute drive from Birregurra for its extensive hiking trail, where you’ll see fern gullies and 300-year-old giant beech trees. The park is also classified as an Important Bird Area for the numerous species that call it home. Visitors can hike the 44-kilometre Surf Coast Walk and may even glimpse whales and dolphins off in the distance.

Sheoak Falls

This coastal waterfall region is a 45-minute drive away. It is home to a number of different stunning waterfalls connected by walking trails. You’ll walk through lush forested areas and discover breathtaking views of the ocean. It’s a good idea to bring a picnic to enjoy along the way.

Great Ocean Road

It’s been said that the journey is more important than the destination, and nowhere is this truer than the Great Ocean Road. You can access this southern coastal highway from Birregurra in just 30 minutes and drive towards The Arch, a natural rock arch with a lookout along the picturesque cliffs of this rugged coastline.
