Your guide to Barwon Heads

All About Barwon Heads

Surrounded by gorgeous natural features, the seaside town of Barwon Heads nestles into the south coast of the Bellarine Peninsula in southern Victoria. The eastern edge of this fishing village turned vacation community is the shallow sandy Barwon River, which snakes north toward Lake Connewarre. The brackish wetlands of Murtnaghurt Lagoon sit to the west, while the southern border runs along the windy shoreline of Thirteenth Beach, just below the rocky headlands from which the town takes its name. Across the gentle Barwon River is its twin, the community of Ocean Grove. Visitors flock to Barwon Heads for its renowned golfing and views, as well as the extensive network of walking trails along the various bodies of water.

The best time to stay in a holiday rental in Barwon Heads

Most of the draw for visitors to Barwon Heads comes from summer activities — beaches, surf, sand, and golf — which happens to be when the coastal climate sees its best weather. January and February bring only a few days with rain, while late fall, winter, and even early spring see close to three weeks’ worth of rainy days — so you’ll need to bring your rain gear. The moderate summer temperatures top out with average highs around the mid-70 degrees Fahrenheit and lows above 60 degrees in the evenings. Winter cools down just a touch, with lows in the mid-40s and highs in the mid-to-high 50s.

Top things to do in Barwon Heads

Thirteenth Beach

This renowned surf beach to the west of town takes its name from a different popular sport nearby: it sits right near the thirteenth hole of the local golf course. Along the long stretch of sand, the waves that roll in work well for all types of surfers, while the wide beach hosts walkers, sunbathers, and sand-castle builders.

Barwon Bluff Marine Sanctuary

At the intersection of the Barwon River and the Bass Strait, 42 acres of protected reef are home to a wide variety of marine life. You can explore via snorkel and scuba diving, or look down into the sanctuary from the bluff and explore the tide pools on the shore.

Golfing

Golfers will enjoy access to topnotch courses in Barwon Heads, where some tees offer spectacular views of the Barwon Coast. Regardless of what course you choose to play, all of the local greens offer stunning natural scenery scented by sea breezes.
