Your guide to Alexandra

All About Alexandra

Alexandra is a rural town located around two hours’ drive northeast of Melbourne. It’s a quaint spot to visit to soak up the relaxed country lifestyle in an historic setting, with National Trust-listed buildings scattered around the town centre. It’s also a great place to discover local craftsmanship in its numerous shops and galleries full of artisan pottery and glassware.

Around half an hour’s drive away from Alexandra lies Lake Eildon, where you can rent houseboats and kayaks, or stay on dry land and hike up to Foggs Lookout for stunning panoramic views of the surrounding landscape.

Alexandra is also a well-traversed path on the way to surrounding state and national parks, as well as a draw for fans of outdoor activities like skiing and hiking. As the largest town in the Shire of Murrindindi, it’s a hub for local events and markets, giving Alexandra the charm of rural life, the buzz of activity, and endless options to immerse yourself in nature.

The best time to stay in a holiday rental in Alexandra

The summer season can get quite hot, but it is not particularly humid. It’s the best time of year for swimming in Lake Eildon. It’s also when you will be able to visit the local Alexandra Market, which runs on the second Saturday of each month from September through to May at the old railway station grounds. Here you’ll find food stalls, crafts, and entertainment in the open air. During winter, many head to the nearby mountains for skiing. Spring and fall are milder months, without any notable difference in rainfall, making these seasons pleasant weather for outdoors enthusiasts.
