Perched on a hill above the Toe River you’ll find Dougs Way, a spacious modern cabin with huge picture windows that frame long range mountain views of the Roan as if it were art. Surrounded by old oaks and loblolly pines, the cabin is large and offers unconventional choices. You’ll love the double-sided fireplace, Japanese soaking tub, gourmet kitchen, instant hot water dispenser, original artwork, and the true craftsmanship found in details like the bent cherrywood “cloud” above the dining table.

“Dougs Way is nestled into a community of artists and the cabin reflects that. From your morning cup of coffee poured into your favorite handmade mug to the original artwork throughout, staying here is an altogether different vacation rental experience. We put a lot of thought into the details of the home, including a 2-sided fireplace, Japanese Soaking Tub in the master bath, and a robust gourmet kitchen with lots of appliances that comes with everything you need except for the groceries.”

Located at the end of the road, the home is safe, private, and quiet, yet is just 15 minutes from restaurants and shopping in Spruce Pine and Burnsville, and 48 miles to Asheville. Doug Sigler was a well-known woodworker and designer. He built many of the homes in the neighborhood and the surrounding area.

Hundreds of artists live in the area to be close to Penland School of Crafts, America's oldest and largest craft school. Hiking trails, waterfalls, and outdoor activities are in abundence.

Owners: Rick and Lisa Smith, Stay at Penland Lisa Smith is a professional vacation rental host with a background in brand development and graphic design. She also wrote a food column for seven years. Her passion for the culinary arts is evident in Conley House and Doug’s Way. A “nester” by nature, her favorite way to spend the day is cooking and baking at home. Lisa’s hosting style is very hands-on while respecting guests privacy. - “I believe no one wants to waste a minute when they are on vacation, that’s why my first priority is to always answer questions and messages as quickly as possible. We like to treat guests as if they are friends or family and “own” their concerns. So when it’s raining and they had planned to go horseback riding we are ready with a number of other options. Hosting to us is about providing more than a place to stay, it’s offering an experience guests will never forget and rising to the occasion if things go a little sideways.” Rick Smith is an artist/blacksmith and handles a lot of the maintenance of the properties. He operates an independent studio making work for galleries and by commission, while also heading the metals program at SIUC in Carbondale, IL. Rick was a resident artist and a coordinator at Penland School of Crafts, which is located just minutes away from the cabins, and has taught workshops there many times over the years. His artwork is in the permanent collections of the Mint Museum, Decorative Arts Museum, Metal Museum, and the John and Robyn Horn Collection, among others. Rick likes nothing better than to spend the day on water, sailing or fishing, and loves to travel to places all over the globe. His work can been seen in both cabins. - “We wanted to create a space where guests could not just look at artwork, as in a gallery, but experience what it feels like to live with it. Many of our guests have told me how much it has enriched their stay and that to me is one of the best parts of hosting, making the artwork as central to their vacation as the view and the comfortable surroundings.”
