This unique property, on the quiet back side of Narraguagus Bay, is a haven of peace, just 4 min. from Milbridge center and a hop, skip & jump from coastal highway RT1. Our rental unit's not like any "apartment" you might imagine. (See details in The Space.) Artist retreats, too!

Each year our high season period (Jul-Aug), with its 7-night minimum, tends to book up fully. If you might want to vacation with us in those months, consider anchoring your dates as early as possible. :)

The space

LEAF PEEPERS: The leaves are just now (Oct. 8) coming into their full glory! Check our calendar for the remaining available leaf-season dates: the nights of October 10-18. For the lucky folks who book them, we're offering a 10% discount. This is already reflected in the rate you'll see. Fall is beautiful here on the coast, quieter and less crowded.

We've had a fantastic summer and early fall rental season, booked solid with great guests. Some are already making plans to return next year! We hope to meet you.

Now here's the description...

"Apartment" doesn't do justice to this lovely vacation and retreat space. Guests have told us we have "a real palazzo" here, and that current photos don't do it justice. It's a private, handicap-friendly, fully equipped independent ground-floor habitat with its own entrances, patio, kitchen, laundry, all amenities--and considerate, unobtrusive landlords who are there when you need them.

The rental unit shares part of one wall with our half of the house. It has two private entrances of its own, one leading to a "Secret Garden," a dedicated guest parking area, and the quiet town road; and the other to its own patio with field and water views, and access to our Point. All the necessary independent facilities including washer/dryer are contained within the rental unit, which comes supplied with towels, linens, dishes, full kitchen needs. There's extra sound insulation between the apartment and our downstairs, and also between it and the room above.

**NOTE: Rental rates include the post-stay cleaning fee and the 9% Maine hospitality tax we're required to collect.

Winter holiday season: If you'd like to spend the last part of December here for your holiday, please inquire. We'll work out a rate for you based on your length of stay.

Guest access

Outside your living quarters, you have access to the entire 3.5 acre property with open field, landscaped areas, and the unique wooded point with its stairway down to the sand beach of our tidal cove, and typical dramatic Maine-coast boulders and rock formations. Extraordinary opportunities for observing wildlife and birds and the intertidal zone. We do expect that guests won't walk directly around our half of the house's downstairs, for our privacy--a non-issue given the property's layout, since you won't be missing anything at all!

Check-in note: call or text us with your ETA when you have a reasonably clear idea. Night-time arrivals are fine, as long as we can anticipate how late to stay up to welcome you, or whether to make simple arrangements for you to get in to the apartment if we'll be out or asleep. We always send local directions and check-in information to guests before arrival, along with a list of some of our favorite places to eat, shop and sight-see.

Interaction with guests

We're available when you need us, and happy to share recommendations and enthusiasms. We're very respectful of guests' privacy, and are also very happy to socialize if you like--we have fascinating visitors from throughout the U.S., Europe, the Middle East and Asia! With some, we've forged continuing friendships, while other guests who come here prefer to just immerse themselves in nature, family, exploration, relaxation, and we hardly see them all week. We like to facilitate your having a no-worries good time, either way.

If you have mobility issues, we can ferry you out to the Point, by arrangement, in our golf cart.

Danielle speaks basic French (which improves with practice) and some German.

We have a descriptive list of our favorite places to eat, explore, shop, in DownEast and Acadia, and we provide that to guests before they arrive.

We have one hypoallergenic Havanese dog (17lb and irresistably cute) on our side of the house only. He's always on a leash when outdoors, and is not allowed to go into the apartment or fraternize with guests--unless they find him so charming that they insist! (Many do.) He shushes quickly once he's let us know someone is at the door; you'll hardly know he's around--including if you have pet allergies. Your hosts are both dog-allergic, and we've had our boy for 10 years with no problem. Havanese have silky hair rather than fur; non-oily, non-dandruffy skin; and don't shed.

Other things to note

We run a small arts center, Sunrise County Arts Institute, which provides much-needed music and arts services in this area. (Your rental fees help toward SCAI's operating expenses.) 1) Would you like voice lessons or a family singing workshop while you're here? Danielle's a master teacher who also helps inspire confidence in shy singers! 2) We offer year-round Creativity Retreat vacations for individuals or small groups. Come here to work intensively on your novel, musical opus, or photo or painting portfolio. 3) This is a great location for films, photo shoots, and small-to-medium-sized special events like weddings. 4) We'll be offering eco-arts workshops and Starry Nights stargazing events. Ask!

Greetings airbnb-ers! All renters, even for short stays, sign a lease with us when booking. We send out preliminary information by email before you arrive, and provide full details onsite in a Welcome Book that gives a lot of good area information.

The basics you need to know beforehand, which are in the lease: 1) no smoking indoors; 2) no pets (we make very rare hypoallergenic dog exceptions, and those only with written permission before you book); and 3) no unsupervised children on the Point or beach; no fires on the Point. Children of any age are welcome; we do need to know their ages when you're booking with us. Also, please be sure to tell us in advance if anyone in your party has mobility issues or other special needs.

We just stayed at Danielle and Claude's lovely property. We are family of 5 with 3 kids ages between 11 and 15, so space was definitely an issue for us. There was plenty of dining room and living room seating and space. We also love to watch movies, and they had a great cable system with lots of access to movies, as well as a DVD player for our own movies. The rental has a gas grill and pots for lobster, both of which we used. The garden and beach access is beautiful. we spent a lot of time exploring the waterfront. We spent time in both Millbridge, ate at several restaurants, got fresh lobster, oysters and crab meat at Chipman's wharf and did a Maine coast cruise with Robertson's Sea Tours. It was also a good midway point for both north and south attractions. We went to Campobello island in NB Canada and spent time in Lubec and saw numerous lighthouses, including both East and West Quoddy. We did the more secluded hikes on Mt Desert Island, and loved the hike at McClelland Park (right in Millbridge). Drawbacks: We had hoped to do more biking, but the roads are narrow and don't have stable shoulders, so don't bother with bikes unless you plan on going to Mt Desert or Campobello for the carriage roads. Also each bedroom only has one bed, so the 3rd kid slept on the floor on a crash pad and sleeping bag. We did know about this, but twin beds would be a nice addition. All-in-all it was a great and very relaxing vacation. The kids were either so busy or too tired to fight or complain about anything.

Response from Danielle:
Pat, we really enjoyed having you 2 and the kids stay with us, and their interest in everything. You covered a lot of the interesting things to do our area, too--glad you got to enjoy so much of it. Your comment about biking is timely. The Maine Bicycle Coalition, with its BikeMaine program, is working on these very issues on roads throughout Maine, and very actively in Washington County, where we're located. Progress is being made--of course, so much of it requires the cooperation and responsiveness of the Maine DOT. Our hope (we are Community Spokes with BikeMaine) is that visitors--and locals-- will see noticeable improvements in bike-friendliness throughout the county. Wish we had known you were having that concern/experience; we might have been able to get some more local suggestions for you from the Coalition. Come back and see us any time!

We stayed a week on this lovely peninsula, climbing rocks, reading in the garden, playing Legos(if you find any-they're ours!), observing bunnies, deer, and the shifting tides. The house is close to a town that had a nice grocery store, a gas station, post office, and a really nice gift shop. It was quiet, but not too far from the beautiful Schoodic Peninsula and ferry or drive to Bar Harbor and Acadia. The house is very spacious, much larger than it appears in pictures. Danielle and Claude are very attentive hosts. They even helped us in securing a mechanic when we came into town with car trouble. Our kids loved playing in the yard and on the beach. One bonus that I never would have thought of that the house had was a hose. I think we used it four times, between hosing off muddy feet and having to deep clean a car seat. I'd love to stay here again when we make it back to Maine.

Elizabeth, thanks for the lovely review, including all the details that are the kinds of things we love about living here too. We were delighted to have you stay here, and enjoyed seeing the kids' active enjoyment of the outdoors. Do come back and see us again!

The perfect combination: gracious hosts, comfortable lodging in a picturesque setting. Nestled among our hosts' gardens, with lovely views and access to Maine's rocky shore. Equipped with everything one needs to wake refreshed, eat-in, and head out for a day enjoying all the area has to offer. We've stayed in various places on the coast over the years and this is our favorite by far.

Response from Danielle:

Thank you Danielle and Claude for sharing your beautiful piece of heaven with us. We were so comfortable in this spacious and well decorated apartment. The environment is so serene and peaceful - definitely far from the maddening crowd. We enjoyed exploring all the wonderful places within such a short distance. Particularly enjoyed the "downeast rapid transit" website - nice to have you as Milbridge's Station Master!

Response from Danielle:
Jane, what a pleasure to meet you all! We're so glad you enjoyed your stay here so much, and hope you'll come back our way again someday. You're welcome at the Fish Point imaginary "DRT Station" any time. ;-) Best regards from us both.
