The simplest summary is to say, read my reviews!
Mine is a friendly and happy home convenient to public transport, universities and the city centre.
I offer WIFI, continuous hot water, shampoo & conditioner, tea/coffee/infusions, access to kitchen and laundry.
My home is not a perfectly pristine show home - I have far too many hobbies for that, so you need to be ok with some books, sewing projects etc. around. I would describe it as clean but mildly messy.
Welcome to my home!
I have available a cosy room with a double bed with a lovely northern aspect, overlooking the paved pergola area. It is private and sunny and in fact has the nicest aspect of all the bedrooms in the house.
Your room has a double bed, bedside drawers, a chair, powerpoints, and space in the wardrobe to hang some clothes and stash a suitcase. You share the room with my fabric stash, but I promise it doesn't bite!
I can lend you international power plug converters for most country plugs.
There is a small set of drawers beside the bed - the top two drawers are empty for you to use, and the bottom drawer contains a hot water bottle and information about local sights.
You will be provided with a fresh towel. If you forget your toothbrush or have any other toiletry needs, please just ask.
I have a three bedroom house which is in a quiet street, superbly located, in particular for Belconnen - Belconnen is one of the central satellites in Canberra, and is about 15-20 minutes drive to the parliamentary triangle (where most tourist attractions are located). It is two minutes walk from my house to a direct bus route to the city and parliamentary triangle (via Belconnen), making it very convenient for either area.
It is also five minutes walk from a park where some Kangaroos come down each evening to feed, so you can take an evening walk and maybe see them! You can also walk easily to the local lake where there are free BBQ's and a range of restaurants along the edge.
My house is solar passive so cool in summer and warm in winter, with instantaneous gas hot water - perfect for enjoying a luxurious candle-lit soak in the deep deep bath, or enjoying the various settings of the multifunction shower.
The backyard is enormous and includes a shaded and paved pergola area for relaxing and enjoying a glass of wine after a long day of exploring Canberra.
Canberra has an incredibly large amount to offer visitors, far more than most people realise. I know a lot of the secret gems of the city which I am happy to share with you, and I usually know the most interesting gigs and exhibitions to visit.
I am musically inclined myself so if you have an instrument, feel free to pull it out, maybe we can play together! I also speak some French, and would be happy to practice with any French speaking guests.
My house is not a perfectly tidy (I own far too many books and have far too many hobbies for that), but it is a happy home where guests can relax and feel like they belong.
While I don't own a TV as such, I have a projector and a large collection of DVDs that guests are welcome to watch on their own computer or on the projector, and books in a number of languages.
You are welcome to use the kitchen to prepare meals.
I recently renovated the kitchen, which boasts two ovens, a microwave, dishwasher and a 5 plate induction stove where you can truly cook up a storm!
I provide tea and coffee for guests at no extra cost - just make your own anytime from the large range of options provided.
If you don't feel like cooking within walking distance is a pizza place, a classic takeaway and a Chinese restaurant. This small local shopping centre also has a butcher, a bakery, a supermarket, pharmacy and medical centre.
You will be able to come and go as you wish, at whatever hour you wish.
Interaction with guests
I guess am a pretty friendly host, and it seems that more often than not I end up feeding my guests - I just can't help myself!
I would describe myself as pretty sociable, but if my guests don't feel like chatting, I won't be upset or offended, and will happily leave you in peace.
I am often out and about in the evenings, so guests will quite often have the house to themselves.
Other things to note
Check in during weekdays is usually after 6pm; earlier check in may be able to be arranged if necessary. Checkout is generally whenever is convenient to you; as long as I don't have another guest arriving, you can sleep in all day.
I am also happy for you to leave your bags in the house while you explore for the day.
To keep costs down I don't include breakfast in my room price. However, as some guests would rather not have to bring their own:
For $3 per person I will provide you with a choice of cereals, milk and juice to make your own continental breakfast each morning.
For $5 per person you will get the above breakfast option plus a loaf of home cooked bread timed to be ready at the time of your choosing, with a range of home made jams and other spreads.
Just let me know your breakfast preferences when you book.
Generally, clean up after yourself in shared spaces, but you can be as messy (not dirty of course) as you like in your own room. I am far from the tidiest person in the world, so am highly unlikely to complain if you leave your coat on the back of a chair in the living room.
I am pretty laid back generally - hmm.. I guess I wouldn't be too pleased at outrageously noisy music and drunkeness after 2am.
Smoking inside the house is a definite no-no, but you can smoke outside away from the house.
