The space

Self-contained mud brick cottage set in picturesque gardens on a 20 acre bush block adjoining Muckleford State Forest, near the townships of Castlemaine and Maldon, and only 90 mins drive from Melbourne. Off-grid solar power. Fully fenced bush tennis court. Cottage overlooks an orchard and dam, where kangaroos and wallabies visit. Nature tours available including birding (home of the endangered swift parrot), reptiles and wildflowers. Walking/biking tracks from the edge of the property to the Muckleford Forest Nature Conservation zone, and past the remnants of old quartz and gold mines. Mountainbikes available (ride through the forest to historic Maldon). 5 mins from Castlemaine golf club.

Best suited for a single or double, but can sleep up to 5. One bedroom containing comfortable double bed and single bed. Sofa converts into a double bed. Cot also available on request.

Cottage has a small, equipped kitchen with fridge, oven, utensils, cookware and crockery, and a large BBQ with wok-burner is also available outside. Cottage has one bedroom, a lounge/dining room, a small internal bathroom with shower, toilet, basin, and a loft. There is a potbelly stove for keeping warm in winter, and a powerful fan for keeping cool in summer (although the mud bricks do a good job of keeping the space comfortable whatever the weather). There is a TV screen connected to a DVD player, and a large selection of DVDs. Books, games, guitar also provided. Complimentary tea, coffee, milk (regular and skim cows milk and soy milk) and basic breakfast provisions.

With prior arrangement, transport drop-off and pick-ups available to restaurants and other attractions of Castlemaine, Maldon and surrounds. Fine dining, local food producers, country pubs and wineries.

Transport drop-off and pick-ups also available to/from Castlemaine train station; the train ride (on V-Line) is approx 90 minute from Southern Cross station in Melbourne.

House Rules

Please respect that this is a working property, and make sure gates are closed firmly behind you, to help keep kangaroos and rabbits out of the orchard.

We have a 3.5kW solar generation power system, which usually is more than enough for daily needs. However, please avoid using appliances with heating elements, especially hairdryers, as the surge can overwhelm the system. On cloudy mornings or after dusk, please use the gas grill for toasting bread, rather than the toaster.

Because this is a rural property, we recommend taking your shoes off before you enter the cottage.

As we are developing habitat for nature conservation, especially endangered and injured lizards and birds, this is not an appropriate property to bring pet cats or dogs.
