Huon Valley House is a place where you can unwind in comfort. We aim high; it’s a spacious, stylish space, with comfortable beds and gorgeous views from every window. And best of all, it’s private but central to everything the Valley has to offer, and an easy drive to Hobart and other Southern Tasmania destinations.

Outside is an acre of lawn and garden, birds and wildlife, plenty of parking and large decks with views in all directions. It’s the perfect luxurious base to explore the south-west.

The space
The open-plan living includes two dining and seating areas (one seating 8 comfortably), 3 queen and 2 king single comfy beds along with a comfortable fold-out bed-couch. The kitchen is fully equipped. There’s free high-speed NBN/WIFI and Netflix, a 65-inch TV, a fast charging multi device station for your devices (Apple or Android), coffee pods (compostable) to get you started (plus a plunger and tea pot/brewer), and warm passive solar design is backed up with a new central Daikin heating and cooling system keeping you comfortable every day of the year.

You will enjoy glorious Huon River elevated views, and the large main deck opening from the living area is fabulous. Enjoy the piano, lots of books and games and relaxing in the recliner. A large section of the block has had secure fencing allowing kids to play outside...or at the other end of the block you will be able to kick a footy as far as you can and enjoy the level open space and gardens.

Each of the four bedrooms has its own nook in the house, and the master includes an ensuite and dressing room along with its own deck (beds are comfy and you will have a good night's sleep with full block out window furnishings). The main bathroom includes a separate bath, and the screen-less showers feature rain shower heads. Internal sound-proofing and separate spaces help keep the peace for larger groups. Premium quality, professionally cleaned linen and ethical bathroom products are all included.

We subscribe to Tasmania’s flagship arts and lifestyle magazines: ‘40 Degrees South,’ ‘Island Magazine’ and ‘Tasmanian Life,’ with plenty of back-issues to browse. There are board games, books and puzzles, toys for the kids, a piano. There’s even a traditional analogue radio (check out the quirky Huon FM at 95.3). There’s also a high chair, port-a-cot and nursing pillow, if you’re travelling with an infant.

Where you’ll be

Ranelagh, Tasmania, Australia

If you’re looking here you probably already know what an incredible destination the Huon Valley region is. A lush, rural setting with Huon River frontage – just half an hour from central Hobart – you’ll find awarded wineries and cider houses, ambitious hikes and gentle river cruises, intimate beaches and a thriving café culture.

Close by is the renowned Summer Kitchen Bakery, selling organic wood-fired sourdough breads plus pastries and excellent coffee. Ranelagh General Store offers gourmet burgers, fries and calamari, as well as great iced coffees.

Home Hill Winery is also just up the road at Ranelagh, offering much-awarded wines and gourmet meals.

You can also visit Hartzview, Elsewhere, Panorama and St Imre vineyards in the Huon Valley.

Huon Jet Boats are based at nearby Huonville, and they also provide paddle boat and kayak hire.

For the family, a short walk to the Huon Valley Caravan Park and you can walk through the apple orchards, watch the pigs being fed, hand-feed the chickens, sheep and goats, watch the cows being milked and cheese making demonstrations. Across the river at Glen Huon is the Pelican Point alpaca farm, which also welcomes visitors. The Huonville outdoor heated public pool is also a hidden gem with 50 metre pool, undercover seating and plenty of lawn to relax on.

Other regional attractions include the Tahune Airwalk and nearby Eagle Hanglider flying fox. On the way to Tahune, you can stop at Geeveston for lunch and check out the Forest and Heritage Centre. Masaaki's is a must for sushi lovers.

Further south are Hastings Caves and thermal pool, and the historic Ida Bay Railway.

The Wooden Boat Centre is located in the quaint village of Franklin, along with Village Antiques. Franklin is just 10 minutes from Ranelagh and provides excellent access to the Huon River waterfront. Try Franklin Marine for fishing supplies and advice.

At picturesque Cygnet you'll find plenty of fine local food, galleries, arts and crafts, and second-hand stores. Farm gate sales are available from the nearby Nicholls Rivulet Organic Farm.

To relax, try Huon Natural Healthcare for reflexology, massage therapies and herbal medicine.

Also in the Huon is Willie Smiths Organic Apple Cider, the largest organic apple orchard in Australia and the makers of Willie Smiths Organic Apple Cider and Stonehouse Craft Cider. You can visit them at The Apple Shed museum, cider house and cafe on the Huon Highway. Another cider house and cafe is Frank's at Franklin, and cellar door sales are available from Pagan Cider at Cygnet.

For whisky lovers, try premium Tasmanian whiskies at the Lark Distillery on Davey Street in Hobart, or the Nant Whisky Bar at Salamanca.

A quick 3 km drive from the house and you are in the Huonville township with access to supermarkets including Woolworths and IGA, petrol stations (including a 24 hour convenience store), Australia Post, banks, pharmacy, bakery, cafes, restaurants etc, as well as a local chocolatier.

I'm reserved but easygoing, if that makes sense. I've been hosting through Airbnb since 2013 and I love it. This profile picture was taken at the local Summer Kitchen Bakery at Ranelagh.
