Unwind in the hot tub

This is one of the few places in the area with this amenity.
Stay at the award-winning, John Wardle designed Shearers Quarters. Available for exclusive stays, allow nature to soothe your body and soul without sacrificing creature comforts. Gaze out over Storm Bay on pristine North Bruny Island, Tasmania, The land of the Nuenonne People, the traditional custodians of this land. With access to three private beaches and walking trails you can be active or simply relax by the fire viewing the wildlife from inside. Either way it’ll be a restorative experience.

The space
The property is a working sheep farm of 540 hectares that is operated by Susan and John Wardle. The house comprises a large open living/dining/kitchen area, bathroom and laundry, two bedrooms and a bunkroom. Suited for Maximum 4 adults and 2 children over 12.

Integrated environmental sustainability is at the core of the building design. The building has a small footprint of 136m2 and is nestled low along the gulley to shelter from prevailing winds. Openable vents and louvres allow for controlled cross ventilation during summer. Double glazing and high performing advanced insulation to floors, walls and ceiling, reduce heat loss during Tasmania’s winter months.

There has been extensive use of recycled materials: timber flooring, apple-box timber walls, and the chimney bricks made on the property in the 1830’s. All rainwater is collected and used for drinking, toilets, and showers. All wastewater is treated on-site and used to irrigate a native plantation. There is a wood heater to respond to year-round occupation.

Guest access
The three-bedroom dwelling will be yours alone. The farm managers, Leigh and Nancy live separately on the farm one kilometre away. Occasionally the Wardle family may be in occupation in the historic cottage nearby.

The property offers 5km of ocean frontage with sweeping views over D’entrecasteaux Channel and Storm Bay where there are three private beaches to be enjoyed, and numerous walking tracks including a walk to Kelly’s whaling station situated at the northern end of the property on Bull Bay and to one tree point at its southern edge.

THE CLIFF EDGE BATH
The recently completed bath located on the cliff edge above Mother Hayles Bay is available for our guests.
Take the steps down to the small bridge below the dam to find the path along the dam wall to the bath. In the evenings the switch to the pathway lights is located at the start of the steps.
A series of stone steps lead up to the paved area where a large slab seat surrounds a fire cauldron.
The concrete bath ( in fact a sheep trough ) is lined with Japanese finger tiles and is located above the cliff to take in views toward One Tree Point and across Storm Bay. The decking is Macrocarpa milled from our neighbour’s fallen tree. There is a heated towel rail and a recess in the deck to take a bottle of champagne.
Robes and Turkish cotton towels are available to use.
Please let Nancy know in advance of your arrival if you wish to make use of this. Leigh will fill the water and set the temperature. In times other than days of Total Fire Ban or high winds Leigh can also light the fire if requested.
Enjoy.

Other things to note
The dwelling has been designed by internationally renowned Australian architect John Wardle and it has been highly awarded both locally and internationally. Widely published and acclaimed, most recently on ‘Designing a Legacy’ on ABCTV with Tim Ross. Staying at the Shearers Quarters will be a cherished experience for anyone who enjoys good design. Over the last twenty years, over nine thousand trees have been planted on the property. ‘Waterview’ is home to a number of important ecological assets such as a forty spotted pardalote colony, coastal values, significant stands of vegetation and habitats for a range of threatened species. Additionally, the owners have shown their commitment to sustainable farming by placing over a third of the property in reserve through a conservation covenant.

The native wildlife is abundant with frequent sightings of
Forty-spotted pardalote (Tasmania’s rarest bird)
Swift parrot (very rare)

Echidnas
Quolls
Sea Eagles
Wedgetail Eagles
Wallabies
And many more!
