Birdsong offers a unique, off the grid experience. It provides a little slice of overnight luxury nestled in the middle of a forest and is designed to create for you a truly relaxing and authentic atmosphere in which to unwind. With up to date fixtures throughout it is the ultimate destination for family and friends alike to escape the routines of daily life.
It's here that you make your dream stay a reality ...

The space
Birdsong provides the perfect venue for an intimate stay away for up to 6 people.
It is close to Christchurch (a picturesque 45 minute drive) and yet totally hidden away up a secluded valley on the outskirts of Little River. Arrive in winter to a roaring fire and in summer to the sound of only birds .
Make your dream of staying overnight in a tree house a reality - it's the third bedroom, a mere 30 metres from the lodge, and comes complete with electric blankets, lights, and a fabulous view.

Guest access
You will have the whole lodge to yourselves and if 3 or more people book then the tree house is also available as a third bedroom.

Other things to note
The lodge itself does not provide wifi or television - although the surrounding garden does have coverage. We want to create a haven for people to take a break from the pressures of all things electronic. In emergency cases we offer wifi or telephone in the (private) main house.
We are proud of the fact that we are off the grid and generating our own power using a hydro/solar system. It's all part of our desire to offer and encourage you to embrace a greener way.

Little River, Canterbury, New Zealand

Birdsong Lodge is a 5 km drive out of Little River. There are a few neighbours in the area but it is set in a lovely, private forest and is generally a very quiet place - the sound that most proliferates is bird song! The last 2 km of road are gravel so just take your time getting to us on this part!

Close to the house you can undertake a one hour walk through the forest, passing a variety of exotic trees on the way. Pushbikes can be hired from the garage in Little River to explore the area. There is a small collection of shops in the Little River township, including a general store, a diner, a garage that sells petrol, and an art gallery.

My husband Greg, and I built this small piece of quintessential New Zealand 8 years ago. With his intimate understanding of all things wood and true flair for design, and my ability to “bring all the small things together” we created this truly unique hideaway destination for travellers. With his passing and with my five children all but adults, I now have the time and passion to nurture this accommodation retreat. Always on a mission here (my list of to do jobs never seems to lessen ...) and with an unusual mix of job experiences behind me to draw upon (from Avalanche Forecaster to Motorbike Postie) it is my pleasure to offer up stories of how Birdsong Lodge evolved, of the colourful local history, and of worthwhile places to visit. And to receive in turn some of the stories that make up the lives of my guests. Birdsong Lodge sits up a tranquil valley surrounded by bush and exotic trees. It is a place where community involvement is part of the fabric of life - an aspect of rural living that I love. It brings a sense of belonging - something I feel plays such an important part in the way we live. When I manage to make forays into the city it is to taste the delights of cinema going, replenish my supply of reading books and, most importantly, share time with friends. I love people and thus offering Birdsong Lodge to travellers is a great way to get to experience and come to know a whole host of 'new' friends.
