The Space

Australian Fibro Shack Chic in a beautiful rural Landscape. The perfect place to escape and relax.

As seen on Design Sponge, the Design Files and featured in Country Style Magazine in May 2013.

We have a wee little house on a wee little farm (20 acres) called Tuppenny Farm down a lovely dirt lane on Wild Duck Creek near Heathcote - about 1.5 hour drive from Melbourne. The house is a very cute and very lo-fi fibro shack.

We are new to the Heathcote and are finding plenty of things we love and we would love to share them with you.

The house has two bedrooms - one sleeps 2 in a queen-size bed and has a baby cot and the other sleeps 2 adults in a queen and 2 children in a bunk bed (only children over 5 in the top bunk.)

There is loads to do up there......here’s a few ideas....

If you have kids there is just so much room to ride bikes...go for adventures along the creek...feed the sheep and (email hidden)ad books...play board games.....dig holes....get really dirty - there is an outside shower.....go fishing and yabbying (catch and release with the yabbies only)....cook...go and visit some other farms like Edgars Mission - 45 minutes away…or there is a mini horse farm just around the corner.....take our blow up boat on the dam ….swimming in the Turpin's Falls swimming hole and Heathcote pool is only 5 minutes away. There is also totem tennis, petanque and all the equipment required for some fabulous afternoons of cricket. Golf is not permitted on the property owing to animals.

If you are a grownup there are amazing wineries – Heathcote is premier Australian Shiraz country not to mention some killer Rose and Sparkling. In addition you are less than 30 mins from many of the Macedon Ranges wineries...Knights Granite Hills and Cobaw Ridge for example. I will provide recommendation of favourites and winery tours are easily arranged they will collect you from the farm and drop you off.

There are loads of great food and wine events on in the region. 5 mins from Heathcote – Cellar and Store and the Willow Room provide a great base to sample local food and wine. 30 mins to Bendigo – Bendigo Gallery, some great restaurants like the dispensary and wine bank, swimming pool, 30 mins to Kyneton - some fabulous restaurants like Annie Smithers, Mr Carsisi and Pizza Verde (my fav and super family friendly!) Great local farmers market every weekend - Kyneton and Lancefield are absolute favourites!!! Picnic at Turpins Falls. Lake Eppalock. Bike riding circuit - If you love getting out on the road the Heathcote/Kyneton/Bendigo is great circuit. Within easy drive for day trip to Trentham, Daylesford and Castlemaine...but mainly we sit, read, cook and go for long rambling walks/rides/drives exploring country lanes.. It is a great place to slow down .......

This is a great quiet and inspiring place for book writing, painting, photography or a crafty weekend of knitting in winter with a great friend.

We have two alpacas (George and Dash) who guard 20 sheep (who look remarkably like Shaun the sheep) and a ram called Roger. There are also four miniature goats who are the cutest things you have ever seen called Jess and her two kids Ruffy and Rolly and Willow.

There is no TV or internet (or bath or air airconditioning)..... Rent covers electricity/phone rental and local calls (not international phone) and accommodation. The house has tank water only for all house purposes so you do need to be economical with water use. Tank water makes the best cups of tea.

It is also a basic septic system so 6 (including kids) is the maximum the property can accommodate for overnight stays. We have had some great weekends with two couples sleeping in the house and kids in tents.

The oven is electric and very temperature stable and cooks a fabulous cake/roast/bread! There is a gas bbq but it is also perfect for cooking Pizzas. There is no washing machine, dishwasher or microwave. There are loads of books!!!

Heating is by wood heater and there is plenty of wood to collect on the property. We are hoping to take the house off the grid soon and fit solar panels. As there is no rubbish collection you are responsible for taking your rubbish with you and leaving the house as you found it.

It’s a little house but we love it and the big back deck makes it a very comfortable place for kicking back with a cheeky glass of wine and a good book. As with all farms it is never finished and we are always changing things around.

Please let me know if you are interested and I will send through details. Or feel free to forward to nice folks you think would love this kind of thing.

Paula was a fabulous host, promptly answering any queries & making some fantastic suggestions for things to do in this beautiful part of the country! The only disappointment was having to go home!!!!

  • My sister and I, and husbands, had a lovely, relaxing weekend at Tuppenny Farm from our usual busy lives. The little cottage had everything that you needed and more…. such as gobs of books and magazines etc., to get us through the weekend. Even though we wanted to take advantage of the lovely living room to sit back and read, we took up Paula’s wonderful advice to wander around Heathcote and Kyneton’s lovely little shops and markets. After a day of shopping and meandering, we then enjoyed a lovely leisurely lunch at the Royal George Hotel. Then back to the farm and enjoyed the rest of our weekend eating and drinking the local wines (and yes, getting into those books/magazines). What else could you ask for…. Bliss! Thank you, Paula.

  • everything that everyone else has said about Paula and Tuppenny Cottage is so spot on. we had the best time! the house is gorgeous and Paula seems like one of the nicest people ever. we could not have hoped for a better time. the animals are all beautiful, the outlook is breathtaking, the house is so charming and comfortable and funky. we did a quick tour of every little town nearby but could just so easily have sat on a deck chair, sipping wine and reading for days., lovely, lovely place. we will definately return some day, worth the long drive from Sydney. thanks Paula for all your tips on where to go and what to see. you made it all so easy.

  • Just wonderful! Thankyou Paula for sharing your wonderful home - my husband and I had a very restful weekend. Paula is an excellent communicator, and has great recommendations for food and wine (and other) experiences in the region. We'll be back to play with Ruffy and read more books!

  • We really enjoyed our stay at Tuppeny Farm! The house is so cosy and brilliantly set up surrounded by a picturesque setting! Paula was an amazing host and communication was made easy from the very beginning! We cannot recommend this farm more. It is the perfect escape! Just watch out for Ruffy and his secret athletic ability!

  • Tuppeny Farm is the perfect relaxing getaway! My boyfriend and I had such a wonderful long weekend at this beautiful little farm, we never wanted to leave. I felt so comfortable and at 'home' but also perfectly far away from it all. Paula is a wonderful host who went out of her way to ensure we were happy. She responded to all booking queries within hours, often sooner. The animals are a hoot! Ruffy and the rest of those rascally goats kept us amused for hours, as did Minty and her pals. I couldn't recommend this place highly enough. I can't wait to get back there soon. Thanks Paula

  • Oh my, I don't even know where to begin! My partner and I LOVED every bit of our stay at Tuppenny Farm. It was such a cosy little house, filled with beautiful things. I would usually struggle without internet and phone connection. But the little goats and animals, beauty around me made it so easy to forget about technology for a while. I highly recommend the farm to anyone else keen on going. Paula is a super lovely lady too. So easy-going and helpful! : )

PS: MIss the friendly goats already! Especially little Ruffy! xo

  • I absolutely loved staying at Tuppenny Farm. Its small, intimate, and eclectic. We stayed during a really cold spell in winter but the house heats up very quickly with the fire place. The beds were snug and very comfortable. My young daughters (5 and 7) loved the goats and sheep which was a really nice 'farm' touch for the family. I took horse riding lessons nearby at Yggdrasil Equestrian Training, and the girls had their first lesson which they absolutely loved. You need not take your own books to read, as Paula has a large array of novels, design and lifestyle books to flip through. Lovely weekend, and may make it an annual trip for the family. Thank you Paula.

City/Country we move between Melbourne and Heathcote regularly. I grew up in the country and love the wide open spaces, still mornings except for screeching cockatoos and quiet nights chatting with friends around a bonfire-drinking a cheeky Heathcote Shiraz. Keen animal lover and a Landscape Architect by profession I love the great outdoors and love sharing all the wonderful things we find up around Heathcote/ Kyneton and Bendigo with the people who holiday at our house. For more photos particularly of the animals you can find us on Instagram as Tuppenny Farm. Also if you (website hidden) Tuppenny Farm and Design Sponge more info is available here. Kind regards Paula
