Tucked away on the sublime waters of beautiful Dal Lake, surrounded by the Himalayan & Pir Panjal Mountain ranges and water lilies, this intricately hand carved, heritage Kashmiri Houseboat awaits as a peaceful base to explore this beautiful country

The space
Kashmir offers the most alluring landscape endowed with natural beauty and a diversity of flora and fauna rarely seen.
Vacationing on a houseboat for a few days is unforgettable and it opens a window to a unique culture and a way of life on water and you will experience the warmth of Kashmiri hospitality!

Houseboats of Kashmir are reminiscent of British Raj. The English found it convenient to stay during their vacation in Kashmir during the Raj to escape from the heat of the plains of Delhi. It was they who designed it according to their needs and level of comfort. However, these original houseboats were crudely designed and built and were later modified and turned into more spacious and elegant structures by the owners.

HOUSEBOAT SEALORD was built in its present form on the foundations of its old version and was commissioned in 1980. It is 120 ft. long from prow to stern and 16 ft .wide.
Like other houseboats SEALORD is wholly made of locally grown cedar known as ‘deodar’ which is a time-tested material used in all boat crafts of Kashmir with a life span on the water of about 100 years.

HOUSEBOAT SEALORD has 3 well appointed bedrooms with attached bath and dressing rooms, a drawing room, one dinning room, and a pantry.
It's wooden rooftop deck is ideal for some morning Yoga, watching the sunset or simply soaking up some sunshine under a beautiful and colourful canopy.

Dimension of the rooms :-

DRAWING ROOM - 22 ft x 16 ft
DINNING ROOM - 16 ft x 16 ft
FIRST & SECOND - 13 ft x 13 ft
BEDROOMS
THIRD BEDROOM - 16 ft x 15 ft

The interior of SEALORD has semi-carved paneled walls and the roof of all rooms is made of intricately designed woodwork known as ‘khatumband’. This unique artwork in roofs can be seen in old mosques and monuments, not seen elsewhere in the world.

All rooms are well furnished with wall to wall carpets, some of which are very old handlooms. Each room has full length embroidered curtains known as crewel that add to the sophistication of the authentic Kashmiri interior décor of the boat. The furniture of SEALORD is of polished walnut wood and presents a fine blend of new and old.
The intricately carved dining table can accommodate 8 persons at a time.

Life on Dal Lake is unique and serene.
HOUSEBOAT SEALORD is moored on a spectacular location on Dal Lake amid serene and peaceful surroundings where visitors would wish to return again and again and spend a few days aboard SEALORD
From the prow of the houseboat (the forward-most part of a ship's bow that cuts through the water) during the wee hours in the morning you can see women in small boats, locally called ‘dembwari’ pulling lily pads and collecting these in their boats which is then sold as fodder to village people for their cows.
You will also see men carry vegetables in bigger boats to sell these in famous vegetable market in Dal Lake, which is held every morning year round. You can visit this market in a small craft known as a 'taxi shikara’ for tourists to enjoy a boat ride on the lake, swimming or to ferry to and fro to shore.
The many channels are beautiful to explore and during summer and spring the floating gardens, lotus and lilies are all in bloom.
Akbar's fort, perched on the hill above the lake presents a stunning and exotic sunset backdrop and is lit all night.

A houseboat in Kashmir is traditionally managed by its owner and his family who work as cooks and stewards. Keeping that age-old tradition alive HOUSEBOAT SEALORD has been in my family for generations and is also managed by myself and family. I am available daily to organise and guide authentic experiences, urban adventures, trekking and cultural tours, transport or simply shopping for high quality pashmina and jewellery. Kashmir is a beautiful and unique place and culture and I love to share it with my guests. Every season is charming in its own way and something to be experienced. My wife Naseema is an experienced and skilled chef who has learnt the art of cooking from her father and she can prepare all kinds of meals including marvelous continental and South Asian dishes. Our daughters give her a helping hand while cooking meals for our guests on SEALORD.
