The space
While not a real castle (well, ok, it's not really a castle at all), Château Chaptal is like a castle to us. The apartment is an eclectic mix of historic charm and modern luxury, and we have done our best to provide everything you will need to have an outstanding stay. The 850 square foot apartment boasts original beams, high ceilings, and large windows, along with a beautiful stainless steel kitchen and completely renovated and updated bathrooms. With its six large windows and high ceilings, the apartment is airy and light. Luxury linens and high quality sleeping and living amenities make the apartment welcoming and comfortable. The apartment is recently renovated (December 2011--January 2012) and provides old-world charm with modern day comfort. Stainless steel, high-end appliances make the kitchen a pleasure to work in (should you desire), and everything you will need to make and serve meals is provided. There is a large, open kitchen and dining room area, with a beautiful solid oak table that can easily seat 6 people, along with several armchairs for relaxing with your coffee or an afternoon aperitif. The living room is adjacent, separated by original wooden beams, making it open and yet giving it its own space. There is a sleeper sofa and armchair, along with a television and several antique tables in the room.

Off the hallway is the main bedroom, with a French king size bed (smaller than an American king, but larger than a Queen, about 5.6' by 6.5'). There is a closet and a dresser so you can unpack and relax in your new home, along with bookcases and a nightstand. On the bookcase you will find a large variety of films, compact discs, and books--just in case you get bored and need something to do. There are even a variety of cookbooks, in French and English, should you decide to cook during your stay.

Further down the hallway is a full bathroom, which boasts a large glass and tile shower, with both a fixed, rainfall shower head and a removable sprayer. It is more than big enough for even a tall American. There is also an antique sink stand, a lighted wall mirror, a heated towel rack, and a toilet. At the end of the hallway is a half bath with a toilet, sink, and medicine cabinet. While not large, it is nice to have another space to use as a bathroom facility.

We have recently finished the second bedroom, which is available should you need it (it is locked when the property is rented as a one bedroom). It is a lovely space just off the main hallway with a bed that can either be made up as a French king or as two twins. There is a small dresser and a table and chair should you wish to sit and work. PLEASE NOTE that the ceiling in this room is sloped and low, and while most folks can stand up in part of it, many will need to pay attention to their heads at some point! It is a very nice room and works well as a second bedroom, but you do need to be attentive to the low ceiling. The apartment is located steps off of the Rue Nationale, a semi-pedestrian street lined with charming little shops and boutiques. It is only minutes from the Château d'Amboise and Clos Lucé (Da Vinci's last home which is now a museum). In addition, the marché, or weekly market, takes place along the Loire every Friday and Sunday, and is only a 3 minute walk from the apartment. This prime location makes seeing the sights and enjoying the city easy and enjoyable.

GETTING INTO THE APARTMENT
When you arrive at the apartment, you will see two lock boxes to the right of the large, green, wooden exterior door. The one on the top is for our apartment. Slide down the black "door” of the key box and enter the combination.

The combination is 7985.

Push the button to the left and the key box door should open. Inside there will be a keyring with two keys on it. The round one opens the big green door which gives you access from Rue Chaptal into the building. Turn the key to your right and push to open the door. (Please note that this door is quite heavy. Make sure whenever you go out that it closes all the way.) Once in the building, you walk through the entry hallway and go through the glass paned door at the end. Once in the courtyard, go through the white, glass paned entry door to your left, which brings you into the entryway for the building. There should be a staircase directly in front of you. Go to the first floor and the door on your right is the entrance to the apartment.

The triangular key opens the lock on the bottom, turn to your right one and a half times and the door should open. We generally only use the bottom lock, but feel free to use the deadbolt (the top lock) when you are in the apartment (although note there is NO key for this lock). There is an extra set of keys hanging on a hook next to the door to the apartment. You are welcome to use these during your stay. PLEASE make sure to leave both sets when you leave, one in the apartment on the hook and one in the lock box.

If you have any problems getting the keys or getting into the apartment, call Serge or Chantal, see below for their numbers.

The number for the phone in the apartment is 09 67 07 04 87. If someone is calling you from the U.S., they would dial 011 33 9 67 07 04 87.

PLANNING YOUR ARRIVAL

Check-in
Check-in time is from 3—7pm (really you can check in any time after 3pm since you have access to the keys in the lock box—however we ask that you not call Serge after 7pm). Please let us know as soon as possible, what time you plan to arrive in Amboise. Our manager and greeter is Serge Come. Serge lives just around the corner, and he is a wealth of knowledge about Amboise and the area. He speaks a fair amount of English and can answer all your questions about the apartment. You do NOT NEED to call Serge, but if you would like to speak to him or if you have any questions about the apartment, please call him with the phone in the apartment at 02 47 30 56 11 or on his cell phone at 06 86 81 93 09. Ask for Serge, give him your name, and tell him you are at the apartment. He is generally available between 3 and 7pm your day of arrival; if he is not available we will make arrangements with someone else and let you know their name and number. If you arrive after 7pm, please do NOT call Serge. You are welcome to call him the next day with any questions you have. If Serge is not available for any reason, you can call our friend Chantal at 02 47 30 94 40 or 06 95 73 03 37 to see if she is available.

Sandra and Tim are ex-pat wannabees who would love to retire in France, but have children who still cost a bit too much for them to attempt this daring feat. Yet, they hope one day that this dream will become a reality, and thus have invested in a modest yet lovely little place in Amboise.
