The space

Our apartment is centrally located, meaning 5 minutes to the main pedestrian street Istiklal and 10 minutes to Taksim Square. It is an authentic Turkish neighborhood, with an interesting cross-section of the Istanbul population. An historical Greek flat, it is a very typical example of the apartments built by Greek families in the earlier part of the 20th century. It's very spacious and airy with high ceilings and beautiful wooden floors. The layout of the apartment is great for welcoming guests. It has two sections of communal space and bedrooms placed so that there is little need to be overly concerned of making noise. Your room has a small balcony with a view down the hill towards the Golden Horn.

We're looking forward to welcoming you in our home. We're a German/ American couple who have lived many years in Istanbul and work in tourism and jewelry. In addition to our mother tongues, we can also speak French and Turkish. And,
as we have both traveled extensively, we are sympathetic to the needs of those who are far away from the comforts of home. Therefore, we cover the details to ensure a more enjoyable stay.

We offer as a courtesy:

• Coffee and tea
• A transit card which saves you money on all public transport
• Maps, up to date guidebooks, etc (don't bother bringing your own)
• Access to our well-equipped, spice-stocked kitchen
• Upon request, set-up of our film projector and film of your choice (We are film lovers, and Istanbul can be an exhausting city. Sometimes it's better to just come home early and relax with a movie!)
• Laundry service
• A wealth of information of the city!

Laura and Matthias are absolutely delightful hosts. The apartment is charming and very close the all the best restaurants in Istanbul. We walked everywhere, didn't catch public transport once. I would recommend anyone to stay here and I would definitely come back again next time I am in Istanbul.

Our stay in Istanbul was fabulous and the flat where we stayed, hosted by Laura, was just perfect for us. Although Laura was not able to meet us on arrival she arranged for three of her friends to meet and greet us and show us the ropes. The room where we stayed had a comfortable bed, plenty of pillows, a desk and a small balcony overlooking the street. Laura provided a public transport card for us to load up and use on trams, ferries and metros around the city which was helpful. The street was a short walk from Istiklal Caddisi and its shops, cafes and restaurants and we had no worries with safety in this area. In fact we became recognisable to the locals we saw regularly in the street and the the local store keeper even gave us daily Turkish lessons. We ate out all the time so had no need to use the kitchen which was available. The flat is up a number of flights of stairs but they were no problem for this 60 year old and his spritely wife. Laura showed us around some of her favourite haunts in the district and we shared a wonderful Turkish breakfast in a cafe in a back street. We really appreciated Laura taking time out from her busy schedule and we were able to find some lovely antique shops near the cafe. I would have no hesitation in recommending Laura's flat to stay. This was our first Air BnB and certainly won't be our last based on this experience.

I very much enjoyed staying here. Fantastic location - 5 minutes from the Istikal and perhaps 20 to the Galata Bridge. A beautifully maintained apartment inside an old Greek-Armenian house: so the rich, polyglot history of Istanbul is something you don't merely feel when out exploring but right inside your own room. I didn't meet Laura as she was away on a trip during my stay, but she was meticulous in arranging my check-in in a way that was convenient to me. Her friend Chasity was very diligent in looking after me after I'd arrived. Impressive.

We stayed with Laura and Matthias for 8 nights and had a wonderful time. Laura and Matthias were very welcoming and helpful - they emailed us advice and directions beforehand on how best to get to their place, and even sat with us on a number of occasions to tell us about Istanbul, chat, and recommend things to do/see. Their collection of travel guides and maps were also invaluable during our stay. Their flat is located in a lively neighbourhood where lots of locals live, yet walking distance to the shops and restaurants of Istiklal Cd. and the Taksim/Beyoglu area. It is on the third floor of the building with no lift, but this was no problem for us. There are also convenience/grocery stores on their street, which have almost everything. The kitchen is well-equipped and we felt at ease to cook meals and share the common areas with Laura and Matthias at all times. It is a steep but very manageable walk to the tram stop (Tophane) via a number of Beyoglu's trendy shops/restaurants. The tram takes you right into the historical district where the Grand Bazaar, Hagia Sofia, Blue Mosque, Topkapi Palace, etc are situated. The Istanbul Modern is also near the Tophane tram stop and is well worth a visit. Thanks again Laura and Matthias for your hospitality!

Great hosts - very hospitable and easy to talk to - were always ready to answer questions and give advice from their experience with Istanbul. Each evening, we and our hosts sorted out if any of us had an arrangement next morning and needed access to the bathroom before a specific time, and that worked fine. The apartment was within walking distance of most forms/lines of public transport, though the walk down to Sultanahmet was steep. We did not have to walk more than few meter to find several small shops with fruit, bread, drinks and other items for everyday living. A nice big room to sleep in. A place we would recommend any time.
