We really enjoyed staying at Sr Antonio's place. It was very spacious and great for two families, each with a young child. The outdoor eating area was fantastic, with a great view of the rest of the village and the children appreciated the presence of the animals. It was also a good location and while there we visited the roman village of Idanha-a-Velha and the settlements of Monsanto and Penhas Garcia.
Antonio's place is just great a huge living room with a wood burner which was most welcome in January. The kitchen is well equipped and functional the views across the farm from the panoramic window are lovely. Please remember that you are staying on a Portuguese working farm, not somewhere in the Cotswolds. The nicest thing of all here apart from the amazing quiet and the friendly village is Antonio. He is a charming host whom can't do enough to help you. Thank You Pamela and dave
Let me say first that Antonio was great. Very helpful and a nice chap. The accommodation itself is a lovely place, well equipped with 3 toilets and bidets, 2 powerful showers and 3 bedrooms and a lovely big kitchen and living area. That said, it would benefit greatly from some garden furniture, as there was nothing to sit on outside and no outside dining table. There are 3 very old 1970s style sunloungers, one of which is broken and collapses when you sit on it, one of which is very uncomfortable because it is so old, and the other is uncomfortable as you are basically sitting on the ground. Most of the crockery is tired, chipped and cracked and could do with replacing, including the only 2 mugs provided, the knives and forks bend as soon as any pressure is put on them, and a set of wine glasses would be good. Although there is a microwave and a modern electric hob, there is no oven, so it is something to bear in mind if you are thinking of staying for any length of time. The microwave isn't very powerful and it took 20 mins to do some baked potatoes. We were a bit surprised to find that the bedding is sheets and blankets, which maybe common in those parts, but we haven't seen since the 1970s and so it was a case of having to make the bed every evening before you could go to bed. Overall, although we enjoyed ourselves, it was a bit disappointing, especially as we were woken up every morning by a chorus of barking dogs.
Response from António:
Thank you Nick Martin for having choosen Quinta Vinha de Vale to spend some rest days. The house is really cozy and takes you back to the 70´s: “Make Love not War” vibe. And yes Nick Martin and partner must have liked the house and the exterior so much that they have decided to spend most of their time there instead of exploring the beautifull region. They liked it so much that they even tried all of the four beds of the three bedrooms available. As for the criticism i believe that with all due respect should be kept private because for a house like Quinta Vinha de Vale with its conditions of price and quality. The comments made by Nick were knitpicking if much. In the house there are in fact antique louge chairs but they aren´t made from plastic, old cutlery but not from plastic, more than 50 portuguese ceramic dishes and not from plastic…anyway, a portuguese house. Ah, since the sunset is in fact very beautiful and romantic from the terrace i accepted the suggestion and i already bought tal glasses, specific for a good conversation and a good wine. To conclude, i thank you for the icecream left in the refrigerator, they were chocolate flavour and they didn´t have time to melt because i ate them all.
Antonio has a wonderful place and he knows how to help all of us enjoy it. He is super generous with his garden and fruit trees and made our stay the most enjoyable of our whole summer vacation. I highly recommend it to anyone who is passing through this part of Portugal. It´s a beautiful area. Thanks Antonio for everything!
Lovely place. António is a very welcoming host, and we had a great stay here. The garden with the sheep is indeed relaxing, and the place itself is quite spacious. Everything is as described. Would definitely recommend staying here.
