Welcome to our little green cottage! We call it the "Elmwood Shack!".
We are Ellie Simon and Sula (age 7!), a green cycling family .
Whilst we are away, The Elmwood Shack would love to welcome green travellers, especially cyclists, climbers, walkers, wee green families and anyone with who loves low impact green living and travel and simple gadget free living! The location and space suits adventurous types who want to get out and about and explore the city but also love to be near the beach, close to open green spaces, and like to come home after an active day and curl up with a book and some good food in front of the fire, or head out to some fantastic traditional pubs and bars by the waterfront.
The Elmwood Shack is a stonebuilt 1890s original "colony cottage". These are mews style family terraced cottages each with their own front garden facing onto no through road cobbled lanes giving the streets a friendly, leafy village feel. The property is an end terrace, set over the 1st floor and attic, accessed via its own private front door and stair from our own garden.
We're passionate about simple low impact green city living and are slowly renovating this original by hand on a shoestring budget, and filling it with reclaimed, remade and salvaged furniture so this suits green travellers interested in eco design treading lightly on their travels and happy to sit by the woodstove of a winter evening. Think of it as a simple cottage tucked away down a cobbled city lane and you get the picture. We are almost off grid; a woodstove backed up with "green" Ecotricity electricity only (lots of instant electric hot water though). This is Scotland though so do bring jumpers, warm socks and your waterproofs even in summer as it can be wet and windy!
Our Wee Space:-

Getting around and about: Our home is really well connected by buses; 15 minutes with regular services to the city centre and train station and within half an hours walk. If you have to fly (we realise its not possible to get a train or ferry everywhere!) we are actually on the 35 bus route which goes to the airport too.
Local Area: Leith is fascinating: it has that mix of regenerated waterfront bars, restaurants, moorings and the old industrial port, historic maritime area and the character of a real working district. Leither are proud of their identity, originally separate to Edinburgh!
Highlights and things to do from our location:-
-City Centre: direct regular buses from the end of our street and the bottom of Easter Road
-The Shore (little cobbled streets, bars, restaurants and deli's and big ships incl The Royal Yacht Britannia)
-Leith Links and Lochend Parks; our local park 5 minutes walk with play area, pond with wildfowl and lots of space to run (children's orchard too!)
-Portobello Seaside by Bike (30 minutes cycle, 15minutes by direct bus) The original seaside resort of Edinburgh is on our doorstep! Icecream, cafes, people and boat watching on the prom.
-Holyrood Park, Palace and Arthurs Seat. The most striking thing about this city, you have to climb Arthurs Seat before you leave. Half hour walk, 15minute cycle or a quick bus ride.
-Weekend trip to North Berwick seaside and beautiful coastline by train; direct buses to Edinburgh Waverley train station then a short 30minute train ride through beautiful countryside to the most picturesque little seaside town.
We'll also be hosting guests to stay with us at other times whilst we are at home so see our other listing.
