Take a step back in time, to bygone era, where life was simpler, where people spent time with dignified entertainment and life seemed to have more space and time. Welcome back to the great age of Steam. The train was used as a workshop, when the original owner was building the house next door (also a Dufflebird property, Otway's Loft). In 2015 we renovated the derelict carriage to the vaguely steam-punk style holiday accommodation. It is available year round and can sleep up to 6 guests.

The space
When we started renovating, the carriage did not have enough intact to restore it, so we have developed our own style that is vaguely steam-punk influenced.

It took nine months to renovate the train from a pretty ragged start. Almost every surface had to have something done to it, and we found that carriages were really tightly put together (all that rattling) and hard to pull apart. When we did get panels off, we had no idea what we would find. We completely stripped and rewired the electrical, and did plumbing from scratch. Renovating anything over 100 years will have its challenges, but this was exceptional. It was opened for guests in July 2015. It is still a work in progress, there is a lot more to do before it reaches our vision, but we have been astounded by it's popularity.

Special features include :
- Can sleep 6 but 2 or 4 would be more comfortable. See Sleeping Options below.
- 3 Bedrooms. Two in a single compartment with a double compartment master bed room. Two Queen beds, two thin train singles.
- Full linen service with beds made up for you on arrival.
- Bathroom with shower
- Open plan kitchen/living room
- Wood fire box heater with wood supply included
- Full small kitchen with stove, oven, sink, fridge and cupboards
- WiFi
- Italian Stove top coffee maker and French Press (plunger)
- Basic provisions like olive oil, spices, tea, coffee, Vegemite and Glad Wrap
With great regret we no longer offer the four free bikes. The expectation of having bikes in good working order was a service we could not reliably offer without living nearby and maintaining them between guests. Bring your own mountain bikes or you can hire bikes at Forrest Hire Bikes, two minutes walk away.
- Pets and children welcome. The yard is fenced but a clever dog could easily escape.

NO TV. There is a stereo, books and board games. There is not a washing machine, nor dryer.

Steam, certainly wont be for everyone, but we have had great feedback from the young and the young at heart. There seems to be a great fondness for the "Great Age of Steam", when locomotives were king! In the late 1800's trains were the greatest technological achievement of humans, they opened new horizons, and were a symbol of power and progress. We hope we have tapped in to this, and we're excited to be able to share it with guests.

SLEEPING
It can sleep six people, but two to four would be more comfortable. The two small bed rooms were train seating compartments, only 2.1m square, so they are only just longer than a bed. The rooms are close together, the bath room is between the kids and second bedroom and there is not a lot of audio insulation. You can hear what is happening in the next compartment.

It is ideal for:
•A couple, with the whole train for themselves it is pretty spacious.
•A couple and two kids.

It should work well for:
•A couple, and up to four kids. Two kids would need to sleep in one queen bed. A great place for kids to take a friend.
•Two couples, as long as they were good friends. It would be close living.

It may work for:
•Four adults, one in each bed. The single beds are train beds, like caravan beds (750mm wide).
•Six adults would be possible, but only if you are planning to be out most of the day and out for dinner. If it a just place to sleep, it could work.

“Not all those who wander are lost.” – J. R. R Tolkien Remember that famous line from Alice in Wonderland as she heads down the rabbit hole into a strange new world of untold imagination. “Curiouser and curiouser!” Well that’s the way we hope you feel about our 10 unique wonderlands. Duffelbird’s flock of getaways are for those with a heart for adventure – places where you can unwind or unravel, let your existential selves hang free to ponder life and love, under the stars, away from the noise – immersed in nature. Our hidden gems are rich in character and layered in mystery, no more than 2.5 hours out of Melbourne – a converted steam train in the Otways, a mid-century charmer on the fringe of an orchid forest, a glass fronted masterpiece overlooking the wild waters of Westernport – each of them tucked away in some of the most unspoilt corners of Victoria, waiting for you to explore with wide eyes and wonder. Bring your well-mannered dogs. Let them roam free, (just not on the furniture) while you settle in to our sometimes quirky, often eclectic, always whimsical, hideaways. *All 10 properties allow pets, only 7/10 allow pets inside. We’ve felt privileged to have had some 'out there experiences' like the ritual Burning Man in the Nevada desert, deep in the jungles of Costa Rica and atop the volcanic peaks of many Pacific islands. And we want to give all the quirky travellers out there a chance to awaken that ‘wanderlust’ energy. Because we all need time out so we don’t go bonkers in the real world. Go on, escape the chaos, experience the enrichment of nature, the magic of complete abandonment, the inspiration of new surrounds. Let Dufflebird be your tour guide to a wildly curious life. Rabbit hole to Wonderland, right this way. Fleur and Mike
