The space

Remember, Bonaire is out of the hurricane belt, so properties have not been affected. Charming 2 bedroom, 1 bathroom cottage a three minute walk from Bonaire's famed, pristine coral reef. Fully renovated 4 years ago. Big garden with a mix of Palm trees, native trees, and a cactus garden. MARCH 2017: We just returned from a wonderful and relaxing week on Bonaire! Added new plantings and pots, added a new stereo and a microwave and new shelves for the kitchen, as well as Vertisol blinds to the big living room slider to cool the cottage. Long term rentals available, contact me for a quote! We now have a 9X12 Palapa for more outdoor space -- making Buttonwood truly a tropical paradise! It has a concrete floor and pitch roof of palm leaves, perfect for dining, reading, or just relaxing. Buttonwood sleeps 4 people very comfortably. Chic and bright, breezy and sunny. GREAT SECURITY, with in room safe and special steel and glass shutters on windows and doors. The Cottage has excellent security with new glass and steel shutters and doors. We have never had a break in. Buttonwood is an ECO-FRIENDLY house, using 80% grey water in the garden. Screens on all windows and sliding doors, (some rentals don't have them), keep out mosquitoes. Constant Caribbean breeze from Bonaire's trade winds keep the house cool, bedrooms have new air conditioners. Inside you will feel like you are outside, which is it's charm. All modern conveniences: flat screen TV, powerful WI-FI, CAC in bedrooms, instant hot water shower. All new appliances and furniture, excellent new beds (can be configured for one large bed, a queen, or 2 twin beds in each room). Fully outfitted kitchen with full coffee and tea set up, gas stove and microwave. Rinse tanks for your dive gear on the porch. Washer for your clothes. Parking for your car. Rural neighborhood, friendly people and a great location, (a ten minute drive from Flamingo airport). Kralendijk's restaurants, nightlife and shops a 10 minute walk away. Washington Slagbaii park a 15 minute drive away. What we love about it the most is the location, the proximity to the sea, the breeze, the birds and the packs of Bonarian parrots and parakeets sailing overhead in the trees at twilight. We spend a lot of time at Eden Beach, Sorobon beach windsurfing, diving, snorkeling. Harbour Village resort, a two minute drive from the cottage, has a lovely (fee) beach for snorkeling, sunning, reading under the palm trees, excellent restaurant and full spa. Eden Beach, a two minute drive away, is great for drinks and casual dining by the water. They sometimes have live bands on weekends. The "hotel strip" is a five minute drive away. Then there are our usual favorite restaurants, bars, and shopping a ten minute walk away in Kralendijk. Try "At Sea," for a really amazing dining experience. It is the number 2 rated restaurant in the entire Caribbean. Stay with us and receive a 10% discount on Air/Nitrox, Boat diving and Courses at Dive Friends Bonaire, about a five minute walk from the cottage.
** Please remember that the security at Buttonwood is very good, the house itself is like a safe, with steel bars inside the attractive glass shutters. This is a real neighborhood, living among Bonaireans and other vacationers. The people are very nice, the breeze, the sea, the swimming and snorkeling, scuba, and sailing are all close at hand. The relaxed pace, the natural beauty are wonderful. As well as being near the sea, the location is central, and so is very convenient to all points on the island.
*** A SPECIAL PLUS is that the house manager will meet guests at the airport and accompany their transportation to Buttonwood. No chance of getting lost! He will also always be available to address any concerns at any point during your stay. I'll happily answer any questions by email or phone. PLEASE NOTE: House manager will meet you at the airport but he DOES NOT provide transport. He will accompany you to your car rental and to Buttonwood, or your taxi. Thanks! Beautiful place, great if you're diving (outdoor sinks, washing line) and comfortable and spacious accommodation. Nice coffee machine. Would come back for sure.

We stayed in Buttonwood cottage for two weeks with our two sons. We loved the house, which was convenient, spacious, well-equipped and cosy. Both bedrooms had airconditioning and all windows in the house had insect screens. We enjoyed the lovely garden and patio. It was nice to spent time outside in the afternoon and evening breeze with the sounds of tropical birds around. The washing machine, outdoor sink, and washing lines made it very easy to wash and dry our snorkeling gear. The location of the house was perfect; a relaxed neighbourhood, only two blocks from the seafront and a 10 minute walk to the center of Kralendijk with all the shops and restaurants. Communication with Rue and the local house manager Baasje was fast and easy. Baasje picked us up at the airport and gave us a tour of the house. We had a great time in Bonaire and our stay at Buttonwood cottage was an important part of it!

Dear Femke: We are so glad you and your family enjoyed Buttonwood Cottage! We were last there in February, where we made some of the upgrades you enjoyed. We have new art work for the cottage, and can't wait to return to get the new pictures framed and up. And yes, the afternoons in the garden....ahhhhh---so relaxing. I miss it! You and your family are welcome to stay again and enjoy all that Bonaire has to offer, Kind Regards, Rue

We loved our stay. The house was well kept and clean. It was close to downtown restaurants and shops. The only thing we didn't like was the noise at night from dogs and roosters. If you close the shutters and turn on the AC, then it should be fine. Overall, it was a good experience and we will definitely visit again.

After an extra night on the road, due to cancellations of flights with Insel Air (the locals call it Insult Air) and for sure they got that name right, we arrived at the very clean house, which looked just like in the photos. The neighborhood is residential and it felt very safe there. The house has a safe for all your goodies and you can even park the car in the yard. We all agreed that the walking distance to town was the most important, it was just a stroll down mainly along the beach. We happened to be there during a very hot time, and thus needed to use the AC every pm, no way were we going to leave the house. There are plenty of mosquitoes, so there was no sitting outside in the pm, when it finally cooled off. There was also no curtain to keep the hot pm sun out of the living room and there is no AC unit in there, which meant we were sitting in our bedrooms to stay cool and sane. Since we were staying at the house with 3 women and one man, we were interested in keeping it cleaned on a daily basis, but there were no cleaning utensils. In regards to this we left a message with Rue, she responded by saying we should just go out and buy some and that she would pay us back for it, that just seemed to be a little too much for us, we were on vacation after all. We cooked pretty much daily, which was not that easy, the kitchen is pretty looking but basic. The outside area is very well managed and growing well. The roosters did not disturb us at all, they are still in the area, but not close enough at night to be a bother. We all would come back to this house. Thanks Rue for sharing your house with us.

I'm glad to hear that you would come back to Buttonwood Cottage. I think though that we can't control the mosquitoes that were outside, or the weather. I will think about the suggestion of a curtain -- good idea! And of course you had powerful CAC in the bedrooms. We hope that Buttonwood is as advertised, a country place which is about being in nature with a beautiful garden and a very good location. We have always found the kitchen to be practical, and love the gas stove. As for the supplies, I live far away and the maintenance costs on Buttonwood are extremely high, as are the electricity and water and gardening bills. I thought it might be a simple thing to pick them up when you were at the store because otherwise I have a significant surcharge from the manager and my profit margin for the cottage is quite low. I offered to reimburse you. However I will make sure we are stocked now. We really do work very hard at making Buttonwood a great experience and I'm glad you thought the cottage clean and pleasant and enjoyed the garden. Hope you enjoyed the parrots too! Our garden has many native fruit trees to keep them happy. We look forward to another visit from you, Kind Regards, Rue

We stayed at Rue's wonderful house in the beginning of March 2016 and we enjoyed it a lot! The house is very well maintained and the beds are just great! Everything you need is there; from pots&pans, BBQ and even plenty of reading material. The location is perfect as well, just 4 minutes walk from the boulevard and 10 minutes from the centre of Kralendijk. Rue, your home and the service of Baasje deserve a glowing recommendation and more great reviews.

We're so glad that you enjoyed your stay at Buttonwood! We'll be there in a few weeks, can't wait to see how the garden has grown, and swim, dive, snorkel and sail in the warm blue sea. This time we're renting scooters instead of a car, remembering the last time we did it--going end to end of our beautiful island in the open air was heaven. Thanks for being great guest, and you are welcome back anytime!

Rue was not present but her house manager Baasje met my son and gave him the keys so he could meet us at the airport and let us in. He was helpful and responded whenever we needed anything. We enjoyed the cottage, the garden, the birds and even the roosters. The neighborhood was pleasant because we were surrounded by local residents who were providing an atmosphere of the community and its daily events. It seemed pretty homey. We found the house comfortable. The new doors and windows gave us plenty of air circulation and the AC in the bedrooms gave relief when it was too warm. The shaded porch was a great asset for watching birds, lizards and it provided a very convenient place to soak and wash our gear after snorkeling or diving. The location was close to where our son has been working and the desirable places to eat, shop and swim. With a rented truck every place was available to us and we had a great visit. Only one comment on the usefulness of the kitchen: The stove was a bit weird and not so easy to use. The fridge was small and had trouble keeping the contents cold, but we drank or ate everything pretty rapidly so nothing was wasted. Finally we liked all the lay out and functions of the house and found it great for the three of us. In addition, the weekly rate for rental was a very decent price. We would be happy to spend time there again.
